NLUS Pittsburgh Council Business Plan By Tom Clark A. Purpose: The NLUS Pittsburgh Council Business Plan is intended to be a document to provide guidance to the board of Directors and its Leadership Team regarding the conduct of its day-to-day business in fulfilling the Mission of the Navy League in support of the nation’s Maritime Services.

B. Process: Council President is responsible for maintaining the Council’s Business Plan which will be updated at least annually and reviewed and approved by the Board of Directors and the Leadership Team Quarterly.

C. Discussion: Membership in the Navy League is driven by the desire of the individual member to be a strong and effective supporter of our Maritime Services. The Business Plan is intended to serve as a document that delineates the programs that are being supported by the Council and provide guidance to the fund raising programs that are required in order to properly execute each program. Additionally, it should serve to provide positive feedback to each member as to what the Council is doing in fulfilling its mission and also serve as an additional recruiting tool for new members who need to know the answer to “What’s in it for me?” when asked to join our ranks.

1. Basic Plan: FY-2020: The current Covid-19 Coronavirus Pandemic has resulted in numerous “event” cancellations on both a national, and local level and the uncertainty caused by the / Social Distancing mandates has made program / event planning extremely difficult at best. As a result, the balance of the year will focus on: a. Membership: We are only as strong as our membership, both in size and quality, makes us. Like our National Organization, along with most of the organizations similar ours who support a variety of military services, our membership is composed primarily of veterans, it is aging, and it is shrinking. Unless we are successful in slowing and reversing these trends, we as an organization will cease to exist. Bottom line is that we need to develop an active and growing membership. b. Fundraising: The Council cannot continue to operate by planning events and hoping that when it comes time to pay for them the money will be available to cover the costs. For this reason, guidelines for the approval of event planning and approval of providing funds to organizations and/or individuals has been developed and has been approved by the Board and the Leadership Team. Additionally, a three-year fundraising program has also been approved for immediate implementation. c. Remaining events this year which, if held, that will be supported by the Council include: i. VA Picnic, or a suitable substitute ii. Golf Outing (as a Navy Birthday Ball/General Fund fundraiser) iii. Navy Birthday Ball (currently scheduled for October 9th.) d. Other Supported Programs: i. Sea Service Awards ii. NJROTC Programs / Sea Cadets iii. Quarterly CO / XO’s Meeting / Lunch

Membership Corner By Tom Clark Have you thought about your membership in the Navy League recently? I hope that it is important to you that you are a member, because your membership is important not only to your Council, but to the national organization that is carrying out our mission on a daily basis to support the need for a strong and vibrant network of maritime services to assist in the maintenance of not only our nation’s economic strength on a global basis, but also our overall national security. Please be assured that the Navy League, both on a national and local basis is doing everything it can to ensure that current and veteran members of the Maritime Services are receiving the support and care that they need, but it cannot be done without your continued support as a proud, active, and contributing member of our Council. Quarterly luncheons for Sea Service Command Leaders In the past 3 months we have held an in person lunch for our local sea services commands leaders and Navy League Council leaders. These luncheons have proven to be a popular networking opportunity for all and a way for the Navy League to provide support our local sea services commands. Again in light of the COVID -19 we have moved to a virtual CDR. Brandon Smith environment.
