ARCHDIOCESE OF GALVESTON-HOUSTON SAINT MICHAEL the ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH MAY 23, 2021 | PENTECOST SUNDAY

“Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” John 20:22-23

1801 SAGE ROAD, HOUSTON, TEXAS 77056 | (713) 621-4370 | STMICHAELCHURCH.NET ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH

Dearest brothers and sisters in Christ,

This weekend we celebrate the Church’s beginning in the Upper Room – the Holy Spirit descends upon the Apostles and they are transformed, suddenly able to speak and understand every language.

Indeed, it seems like a very appropriate time to share with you that I have discerned – guided by that same Holy Spirit – a calling to seminary, with the hopes of being ordained to the Holy Priesthood of Jesus Christ for the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. I’ll begin my studies in June at Saint Mary’s (Houston) for the summer before heading up to Holy Trinity Seminary (Irving, Texas) this fall.

I want you to know of my tremendous gratitude to the community of Saint Michael the Archangel and to Father Wayne: Whether or not you realize[d], this parish has served me in ways I will never forget and has allowed me to grow deeper into my faith. Thank you for allowing me to serve God with and for you. My brother said it beautifully in his Christmas card to me:

“God is undeniably worthy of our pursuit, and no greater offering can be laid before Him than one’s life.”

May we continue to walk this journey together which we make for the glory of the Lord in service to His holy people. I ask for your prayers not only for myself, but for all seminarians, and all discerning their vocation. Know of my continuing prayers for this, my spiritual home.

Saint John Vianney, Patron Saint of priests, pray for us! Saint Michael the Archangel, pray for us! Come, Holy Spirit!

Until we meet again in prayer in the Heart of Jesus,

Matthew Thomas “John Paul” Lydick

PENTECOST SUNDAY ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCH STEWARDSHIP

Church Roof Replacement

After careful consultation and discernment, the 57-year-old roof on the original church must be replaced. It is crucial to complete this project before the upcoming hurricane season, particularly before the months of August and September, which are historically the most active months for storms. Weather permitting, construction is scheduled to begin the week of May 24th and will not interfere with church services, weddings, or funerals. For safety purposes, certain areas surrounding the church will be taped or fenced off. Progress reports on this project will be forthcoming. For more information about the construction process, please contact Bob Basye or Derek Roy by calling the church office at (713) 621-4370. Our parish will need approximately $600,000 to replace the roof on both the church and the bell tower, clean and seal the outside walls of the church and bell tower, and replace some trees and landscaping lost in the recent freeze. Your ongoing contributions are very much appreciated and critical to the upkeep of St. Michael the Archangel. Anything you are able to contribute over and above your usual giving will have a meaningful impact. Should you have any questions, please contact Tom DeGeorgio at (713) 859-5981. Donate Online: If you would like to make an online donation, please scan the QR code or visit the church website at stmichaelchurch.net/online-giving. On the donation form, you may select “Roof Replacement” from the Fund drop-down menu to donate directly to these efforts. Donate by Check: To contribute by check, please note “Roof Replacement” on the memo line and make it payable to "St. Michael Church." You can either drop the check in the church collection, bring it to the church office, or mail it to 1801 Sage Road, Houston, Texas 77056. Thank you for your consideration and generosity. May God bless the construction on our beloved church – that it, and we, may be made worthy of the glory and honor of our Lord Jesus Christ!

DEACON'S CORNER

FEAR NOT Jesus says to his fearful disciples and to us: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”

Jesus knew their fears and ours. He says to them and to us: “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

That empowering gift brings freedom from fears. May I spread the fire of God’s love.
