Internet discussion boards have become an important venue for women to participate in ongoing discussions about the role of mothering in contemporary society and serve as a means by which they are actively shaping society’s understanding of the role of mothers. A textual analysis of a popular mothering discussion board yielded two dominate mothering identities, tensions that exist for each mothering type and how mothers resolve those tensions through the mothering discourse. The study ultimately revealed the ways in which the mothering discourse serves as an important part of the identity construction process and is used as a means of negotiating, managing and ultimately reinforcing a mother’s own identity. i TABLE OF CONTENTS CHAPTER I. Alan Williams: Surround Sound Auteurs and the Fragmenting of Genre Proceedings of the 12th Art of Record Production Conference Mono: Stereo: Multi Williams, A. (2019). Surround Sound Auteurs and the Fragmenting of Genre. In J.-O. Gullö (Ed.), Proceedings of the 12th Art of Record Production Conference Mono: Stereo: Multi (pp. 319-328). Stockholm: Royal College of Music (KMH) & Art of Record Production. Alan Williams: Surround Sound Auteurs and the Fragmenting of Genre Abstract Multi-channel sonic experience is derived from a myriad of technological processes, shaped by market forces, configured by creative decision makers and translated through audience taste preferences. From the failed launch of quadrophonic sound in the 1970s, through the currently limited, yet sustained niche market for 5.1 music releases, a select number of mix engineers and producers established paradigms for defining expanded sound stages. Whe- reas stereophonic mix practices in popular music became ever more codified during the 1970s, the relative paucity of multi-channel releases has preserved the individual sonic fingerprint of mixers working in surround sound. More- over, market forces have constricted their work to musical genres that appeal to the audiophile community that supports the format. This study examines the work of Elliot Scheiner, Bob Clearmountain, Giles Martin, and Steven Wilson to not only analyze the sonic signatures of their mixes, but to address how their conceptions of the soundstage become associated with specific genres, and serve to establish micro-genres of their own. I conclude by ar- guing that auteurs such as Steven Wilson have amassed an audience for their mixes, with a catalog that crosses genre boundaries, establishing a mode of listening that in itself represents an emergent genre – surround rock.

  • Mtv and Transatlantic Cold War Music Videos
102 MTV AND TRANSATLANTIC COLD WAR MUSIC VIDEOS WILLIAM M. KNOBLAUCH INTRODUCTION In 1986 Music Television (MTV) premiered “Peace Sells”, the latest video from American metal band Megadeth. In many ways, “Peace Sells” was a standard pro- motional video, full of lip-synching and head-banging. Yet the “Peace Sells” video had political overtones. It featured footage of protestors and police in riot gear; at one point, the camera draws back to reveal a teenager watching “Peace Sells” on MTV. His father enters the room, grabs the remote and exclaims “What is this garbage you’re watching? I want to watch the news.” He changes the channel to footage of U.S. President Ronald Reagan at the 1986 nuclear arms control summit in Reykjavik, Iceland. The son, perturbed, turns to his father, replies “this is the news,” and lips the channel back. Megadeth’s song accelerates, and the video re- turns to riot footage. The song ends by repeatedly asking, “Peace sells, but who’s buying?” It was a prescient question during a 1980s in which Cold War militarism and the nuclear arms race escalated to dangerous new highs.1 In the 1980s, MTV elevated music videos to a new cultural prominence. Of course, most music videos were not political.2 Yet, as “Peace Sells” suggests, dur- ing the 1980s—the decade of Reagan’s “Star Wars” program, the Soviet war in Afghanistan, and a robust nuclear arms race—music videos had the potential to relect political concerns. MTV’s founders, however, were so culturally conserva- tive that many were initially wary of playing African American artists; addition- ally, record labels were hesitant to put their top artists onto this new, risky chan- 1 American President Ronald Reagan had increased peace-time deicit defense spending substantially.

  • Star Prophecy: Secular History Since Cross of Christ
mark h lane www.biblenumbersforlife.com STAR PROPHECY: SECULAR HISTORY SINCE CROSS OF CHRIST “Our Father Which Art in Heaven” SUMMARY The future is written in the Stars: a truth Christians can embrace: Creator God set those stars in motion. Our first paper in this series compared prophecy in the stars to Sacred History in the time of Christ & Apostles on a year by year basis (See Star Knowledge – Sacred History). Please read this paper first. This paper compares prophecy in the stars to Secular History for the past two thousand years. We will break down the past two thousand years into 50 year segments or ‘eras’. Each era matches a star sign. Because each star sign matches a chapter in Genesis, each era also matches a chapter in Genesis. We are in the 41st era (2001 AD to 2050 AD) since the Star Wheel began to rotate in 1 AD. This era is the star sign CETUS which means “BEAST FROM THE SEA: SHAMAN” and corresponds to Gen. 41 where Joseph explained Pharaoh’s Dream. Pharaoh elevated Joseph, who was the prototype Shaman.1 BASICS OF STAR PROPHECY By careful investigation into star meanings we reached three basic conclusions: (1) The drama of eternal salvation is written in star signs on Sun’s path (Basic Paper); (2) All the constellations in the heavens speak a prophetic word (Expanded Paper); (3) Prophetic knowledge in star signs maps 1-to-1 to chapters in Genesis (Advanced Paper). ASTROLOGY IS FORBIDDEN Astrology is forbidden (Deut. 18). Our research is not astrology. Our pictures for star signs and our meanings for star signs are Christ centered and reflect a Biblical perspective.
