Our father Lennart Count Bernadotte was the son of Prince William of Sweden and of Maria Pawlowna, Grand Duchess of Russia. He further developed the former palace park of his great-grandfather, Grand Duke Friedrich I of Baden, making it a paradise of flowers and plants and opening it to the public. Today, we are the fifth generation of our family to guide the island’s destiny and we hope to continually inspire afresh an enjoyment of nature in our visitors from all over the world. Blossoming water - floating gardens The Mainau Flower Year 2020 The mere thought of a garden with a pond immediately evokes sensations of relaxation and refreshment. Perhaps this is why water gardens have always been a popular subject for poets and painters, with Claude Monet undoubtedly being one of the most well-known of them. Water is certainly an important design feature in the garden and of course, it ensures all growth. Some plants even thrive under water. In the 2020 Flower Year our gardeners focus on the close connection between water and gardens and cast an eye towards Landesgartenschau (State Horticultural Show) in Überlingen on the northern bank of the lake. In doing so, they have not only created floating gardens with water lilies but also have reinterpreted the popular dancing fountain of the Baroque period. Our wide-ranging displays include information points featuring water as the building block of life where visitors can discover the surprising qualities and benefits of water and aquatic plants. For example here you can learn about the potential of aquatic plants for use in water treatment processes and energy production. Our island’s chefs prove with their dishes that aquatic plants in addition to fish make an eye-catching culinary treat for the palate which could go well with a fruity water ice to finish.

Enchanted Scandinavian Winter Market New! Mid-November 2020 until 6 January 2021, from Wednesdays to Sundays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Inspired by the traditional winter markets of Scandinavia, a small, fine winter market takes place in the baroque palace courtyard on Mainau Island. Musical Mainau | 5 July With this event Mainau park gardens are again the venue for a gathering of groups of school children playing music and of ensembles of amateur musicians from Baden-Württemberg, Switzerland and Austria. Around 600 participants will turn the island at the beginning of July into a colourful musical display.
