Spring 2008 NEWSLETTER HLF backs Treshnish IN THIS ISSUE........ • Cover story: Hebridean Trust wins lottery grant Interpretive Exhibition • Glasgow University Digs Treshnish Isles • Raleigh International clean Tiree beaches The Treshnish Isles, acquired by • Treshnish Isles Seabird survey published the Hebridean Trust in 2000, are the subject of a new grant awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Trust is delighted to announce the HLF have allocated £50,000 to pump-prime a new Treshnish Isles Natural History Interpretive exhibition. The new facility will be located at Hynish on the Isle of Tiree with the aim of bringing the Treshnish experience into the community, in particular giving access to the islands for those who would find the real physical environment too challenging. Crucially, the project will support efforts to keep numbers of visitors to the Treshnish manageable in the light of the breeding colonies. Exciting film footage will be provided by the BBC, who worked closely with the Hebridean Trust in filming the staggering seabird populations of the Treshnish Isles for BBC2’s Nature’s Calendar series. Designs and quotes have been submitted to the Trustees, with the brief to convert the Category A Listed Old Cowsheds and the Signal Tower for the new exhibition space and to provide for the research, production and installation of the interpretation material. It is hoped that work can start in 2008, and a curator has been appointed in readiness. The Trust is now finalising funding for this project after the flying start provided by the Andrew Carter censusing for Storm Petrels on the Boulder Beach, Lunga (Robin M. Ward)Heritage Lottery Fund. About the Treshnish Isles Archipelago • The Hebridean Trust purchased the archipelago of the Treshnish Isles in April 2000 with assistance from the Heritage Lottery Fund. • The Isles are spectacular. Exposed to the open Atlantic Ocean to the west and with no good landing sites, human impact is negligible. • The importance of their rich wildlife is recognised by designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the EC Directive (79/409) on the Conservation of Wild Birds. Glasgow University Digs Treshnish Defences A fascinating report produced following a standing building survey of Cairn na Burgh More in the Treshnish Isles, has highlighted the important strategic position held by the islands, and Cairnburgh Castle in particular, and their role in major political events until the mid-eighteenth century. Glasgow University Archaeological Research Division (GUARD), has also flagged up key areas for further research including detailed work on the Medieval chapel and possible burial ground; the eighteenth-century Surveying the East gable of the Chapel from the South West barracks; and potential prehistoric and Norse remains. Ancient indeed, the earliest reference to Cairnburgh In a separate development, and in support of the Castle appears in the Norse Sagas, specifically the saga Hebridean Trust’s Management Plan objectives, Historic of Hakon Hakon’s son – which was composed during the Scotland has confirmed that it proposes to take forward second half of the thirteenth century. During the centuries, the scheduling of Cairn na Burgh More and Cairn na Burgh the Treshnish Isles and the castle were fought over and Beg, the twin locations of Cairnburgh Castle, as an Ancient alternately gifted, confiscated or restored in the struggles Monument. between the Scottish Crown, the MacLeans of Duart and the Campbells before being finally abandoned by the permanent government garrison, presumably sometime after the 1745 Jacobite uprising. Following the GUARD work on the Treshnish Isles, the Hebridean Trust is now considering the steps necessary to act on the recommendations of the report. Of particular interest is archaeological investigation of Carin na Burgh Beg and the urgent need for conservation of the chapel, curtain wall, barracks, half-towers and the guardhouse.
