A39 Williton to Bridgwater Road, Holford & Kilve

(Notice2) SOMERSET COUNTY COUNCIL DISTRICT OF WEST SOMERSET PARISHES OF HOLFORD & KILVE Temporary Closure of A39 Williton to Bridgwater Road TAKE NOTICE that in pursuance of Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulations Act 1984, as amended by the Road Traffic (Temporary Restrictions) Act 1991, the County Council of Somerset have made an Order PROHIBITING ALL TRAFFIC from proceeding along A39 Williton to Bridgwater Road; from 130 m west of the junction with Hilltop Lane to 170 m south of the junction with Kilton Cross, a total distance of 330 metres. This order will enable Somerset Highways to carry out resurfacing works in this road. The Order becomes effective on 23rd September 2014 and will remain in force for eighteen months. The works are expected to last for 1 night (1900 - 0700hrs). While the closure is in operation an alternative route will be signed as detailed below. ALTERNATIVE ROUTE From the eastern end of the closure proceed in a south easterly direction along the A39 to the junction with the A38. Turn right and proceed in south easterly and south westerly directions along the A38 to the junction with the A3259. Turn right and proceed in south westerly and north westerly directions along the A3259 and the A358 to the junction with the A39. Turn right and proceed in south easterly and north easterly directions along the A39 to the western end of the closure, and vice versa. Vehicles over 4.2 Mt (13’ 9’’) High will be diverted via the B3227 the B3224 and the B3190 to the A39. We have all been through so much this year, especially with lockdowns during the year. Just as we were gaining momentum after the first lockdown, we had to lock down again. We will of course continue to support our residents during the global pandemic and reduce the risk of spreading the coronavirus. Despite, the difficulties this year, the Housing Directorate has continued to deliver against their objectives of delivering more new homes, providing great customer services and improving our existing homes and neighbourhoods. I hope you enjoy reading about the great things that have been achieved in this edition. The future of Local Government still remains subject to change and I wrote to you in November to make you aware of those changes. The public rights of way network is key to enabling residents and visitors alike to access services and enjoy the beauty of Somerset’s diverse natural and built environment. Over the next few years, the focus is going to be chiefly on performing our statutory duties. However, where resources allow we will strive to implement the key priority areas of this 2nd Improvement Plan and make Somerset a place and a destination for enjoyable walking, riding and cycling. SOMERSET GEOLOGY-A GOOD ROCK GUIDE Hugh Prudden The great unconformity figured by De la Beche WELCOME TO SOMERSET Welcome to green fields, wild flower meadows, farm cider, Cheddar cheese, picturesque villages, wild moorland, peat moors, a spectacular coastline, quiet country lanes…… To which we can add a wealth of geological features. The gorge and caves at Cheddar are well-known. Further east near Frome there are Silurian volcanics, Carboniferous Limestone outcrops, Variscan thrust tectonics, Permo-Triassic conglomerates, sediment-filled fissures, a classic unconformity, Jurassic clays and limestones, Cretaceous Greensand and Chalk topped with Tertiary remnants including sarsen stones-a veritable geological park! Elsewhere in Mendip are reminders of coal and lead mining both in the field and museums. Today the Mendips are a major source of aggregates. The Mesozoic formations curve in an arc through southwest and southeast Somerset creating vales and escarpments that define the landscape and clearly have influenced the patterns of soils, land use and settlement as at Porlock. The church building stones mark the outcrops. Wilder country can be found in the Quantocks, Brendon Hills and Exmoor which are underlain by rocks of Devonian age and within which lie sunken blocks (half-grabens) containing Permo-Triassic sediments. The coastline contains exposures of Devonian sediments and tectonics west of Minehead adjoining the classic exposures of Mesozoic sediments and structural features which extend eastward to the Parrett estuary. The predominance of wave energy from the west and the large tidal range of the Bristol Channel has resulted in rapid cliff erosion and longshore drift to the east where there is a full suite of accretionary landforms: sandy beaches, storm ridges, salt marsh, and sand dunes popular with summer visitors.

Sec.) pUT a few years ago the history of any parish would have ^ commenced with some extract from Domesday book, now, thanks to one, alas ! lately departed from us, two years earlier can be included, and much new matter gained. Still all is rather complex, and future workers may yet find room for their investigations. In the Gheld Inquest then, taken in 1084, Dul- vertona is found as part of Williton Hundred, and, with Netelcoma and Uinnesforda, was rated at six hides, one virgate and one fertin, the dues on which were in arrear. The Domesday measurement is about a third more. But although Dulverton is here found already in Williton, it for a time, it would seem, gave the name to the Hundred. It here included Potesdona(Pixton), Holma (Hollam), and certain lands owned by thirteen Taini, the value, £-3. 4s. 2d., making uipthe Domesday measurement of 8,337 acres, held by the King in capite. Be- fore the Conquest it was owned by Earl Harold, who received a rent from Brigeford, from the Earl of Moretain, of twenty- “ four sheep ; a custom, says the Inquest, now discontinued.” The rental was eleven pounds ten shillings, paid in white money. Within the manor was a still uncertain holding of one virgate of land, called Widepolla, the same spelling as for Withypool, held by Robert de Odburvilla, formerly owned by one Dodo in the time of King Eadward. D'Auberville, as the name next becomes, and Dodo, were both King’s foresters, but D’Auber- ville, by a suit at law, managed to secure the property, and then to separate it from Dulverton, holding it by what was considered the more honourable tenure, by service, instead of, as before, by a money rent.

County Councillor Report Williton and Minehead hospitals: Cllr Christine Lawrence reported that she had met with the clinical commissioning group to ascertain the Williton & Minehead hospitals situation. Wards in Minehead had been closed, due to lack of staff, and patients moved to Williton which is now full. The real problem is due to difficulties in recruiting staff, not finance, and this brings with it grave concerns as the area has a high proportion of elderly residents. Further talks are planned for two weeks’ time with the partnership board regarding training and the need to encourage young people to train and remain in the area once qualified. Buses: the Porlock to Minehead service has been kept running for the present.
