Reaching playoffs a priority in team's second season http://www.venturacountystar.com/news/2008/may/01/no-headline---sc1... Reaching playoffs a priority in team's second season By Joe Curley Thursday, May 1, 2008 Having set the foundation, the Ventura County Fusion looks onward and upward as it opens its second campaign Friday night. Last year's inaugural season ended one goal short of the United Soccer League's Premier Development League's postseason. The Fusion watched as its Southwest Division rivals, the Fresno Fuego, reached the national Final Four in Texas. Six original Fusion players were snapped up by Major League Soccer in the offseason, including Thousand Oaks native Chance Myers, who the Kansas City Wizards drafted first overall in the MLS Superdraft. Yet the players, coaches and front office staff seem united in a bullish outlook for the team's follow-up season. "Last year, I didn't have too many expectations for the team, despite the roster we had," said goalkeeper Logan Frank. "I didn't know how the PDL system worked and none of us had played together. "This year, I think we've set the bar higher as a team." That means playoffs or bust. "We have to make playoffs," said Frank. "Playoffs is a big thing for us, this year." "Obviously, from a team perspective, we want to be in the playoffs this year," agreed general manager Ranbir Shergill. That may seem difficult, considering who won't be back this summer. The Fusion finished 9-4-3 last season, earning 30 points from 16 matches.

Former USC stars will play in women's inaugural match http://www.venturacountystar.com/news/2008/may/10/former-usc-stars-... Former USC stars will play in women's inaugural match By Joe Curley Saturday, May 10, 2008 Defender Kasey Johnson and midfielder Megan Ohai have both been cleared to take part in the Ventura County Fusion women soccer team's inaugural match in the W-League today. Both played for national champion USC last fall. The Fusion will host fellow newcomer Pali Blues at 5 p.m. at Buena High in the first of four doubleheaders this summer with the Fusion men. The Blues, constructed by head coach Charlie Naimo who coached the New Jersey Wildcats to the 2005 W-League title, match some of the top young American players, including Danesha Adams (UCLA) and Kendell Fletcher (North Carolina), with internationals like Sasha Andrews (Canada), Sarah Walsh (Australia) and Ilaria Pasqui (Italy). "We're very excited," said Fusion general manager Ranbir Shergill. "It's going to be another historic day, with the highest level of women's soccer coming to Ventura. "It's going to be a tough task, but this is what it's about. It's an opportunity for the crowd to see some exciting players." The Fusion could give debuts to several local products, including defender Ali Avina (Ventura), fullback Tenley Garcia (Oxnard), midfielder Sarah Stolz (Ojai), winger Kylie McDonald (Westlake Village) and forward Jen Lilley (Thousand Oaks). Men get boost up front: Former Rio Mesa High and UC Santa Barbara striker Jaime Ambriz is set to make his first start in a Ventura County Fusion shirt tonight as the men take on the San Fernando Valley Quakes.
