PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Cal South Members,

The last twelve months have been exciting and challenging for Cal South. Our programs have had continued success. Cal South is a leader on the field in our recreational and competi- tive programs. We boast the best TOPSoccer opportunities while maintaining success in our Olympic Development Program. Cal South is a leader in Region IV and across the country. More than ever, Cal South is One Soccer for all . We have focused much energy and effort in the past year in order to grow Cal South in all communities and age groups. We are now just beginning to see the positive outcome. Cal South has risen to meet the challenges presented by the national economic crises. We culled the budget, reviewed our investments, and maintained our financial health. As the economy recovers we are in a position to grow with vision and design. Our Board of Directors has continued to be a cohesive body working with the staff for the best implementation of poli- cies and directives. We have faithfully maintained corporate transparency. We have kept current disclosures of conflicts. Cal South strives to act with the highest levels of professionalism. Soccer Nation Expohas continued to be one of the major industry shows in the business of soccer. Cal South is more the center of soccer in Southern California than ever before. Plans for the future will secure this position. The concept of “One Soccer for all Southern California” has brought us to the vision of adult amateur play in Cal South. Over the last year the landscape in adult soccer has been radically altered. Cal South, within a matter of weeks, is expected to be recognized as the official adult state soccer association by the United States Soccer Federation. Existing youth leagues will grow to allow their players to continue to play soccer in Cal South. Existing adult leagues will join Cal South and find new opportunities for play. The time has come where a five year old will play Cal South recreational soccer, his older brother or sister will play on a competitive Cal South team, his Aunt or Uncle will play on a Cal South amateur competitive team, his Mom and Dad will play in a Cal South coed league, and his Grandfather will play in a Cal South senior league.

Yours in Soccer,

As a VIP for one of over 230 leagues within Cal South, you are likely well-versed in your league’s connection to your state association. It’s also pos- sible, though, that you may think of Cal South’s role as purely administrative. What you may not be aware of, though, is that Cal South has remained at the forefront of innovation for several years now, not just as a state youth soccer association, but as a topnotch non-profit organization. This is evident not just in the diversity and progressiveness of the programs it offers to its members, but also in the way that Cal South constantly seeks to expand its horizons, and the horizons of the leagues under its wing. The main purpose of Cal South’s existence is to bring exclusive benefits to every one of its members, sometimes in very surprising ways. Our extensive insurance coverage provides primary and/or secondary medical insurance for all Cal South members, as well as Field Liability Insurance coverage. Cal South’s KidSafe Risk Management program does just that: keeping everyone’s kids safe, with mandatory fingerprinting for all Cal South coaches and league administrators. Our online CORIS system makes it easier for teams to register and manage their players’ vital information, while CalSouth.com provides everyone, from teams wishing to apply for State and National Cup to tournament directors promoting their competitions to those in search of coaching and referee education, all of the necessary information with just a few quick keystrokes. Members often receive special discounts and opportunities through Cal South’s partnerships with many exciting companies. And don’t forget Cal South’s exclusive publications, such as the Cal South Tournament Guide, which lands information about your tournaments directly into the hands of over 25,000 coaches and administrators, both local and national, annually, and Cal South Soccer Magazine, our quarterly publication, which is mailed free to over 90,000 member households.

Cal South is also at the forefront of providing progressive soccer programs to all ages and skill levels, whether recreational or competitive. Our Coaching Education program licenses over 4,000 coaches annually through a wide variety of training courses, while our Referee Education Program helps develop and train over a thousand new youth referees each and every year. Cal South’s Olympic Development Program (ODP) is one of the most highly touted in the country, with more players identified for the U.S. National teams and pools than any other. Advanced recreational players can prepare for their leap into competitive play through our Signature League gaming circuit, while our TOPSoccer program, providing soccer opportunities to young athletes with physical and mental disabilities, is one of the most strongest such programs in the U.S. And now, with Cal South’s leap into the world of Adult League soccer, we are proving once more that the future of soccer in Southern California lies with all of us. This year’s Cal South Annual Report, along with providing the necessary audited financials in the pages that follow, also seeks to give all of its Member League VIPs a better overall view of Cal South, not just in a recap of the past year, but of where we are today, heading into the future. And where Cal South goes, so goes your league. We appreciate your membership.

Donations to Regional and National Championship Participants: $290,000

In what is perhaps the in member benefits, Cal South once more came to the aid of its teams that attended the US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals and National Championships, by donating nearly $300,000 to help ease the financial burden of travel expenses. $10,000 was given to each of the eight teams that traveled to Little Rock, Arkansas for the National Championships late in July, while $5,000 was handed to each of the 42 teams that flew to Hawaii for the Regionals in late June. The total amount of $290,000 is the largest ever given out by Cal South to its clubs in a single year. The money for these donations is largely built from the fees for the Cal South State Cup and National Cup competitions.

High-caliber teams aren’t the only thing, though, that Cal South assisted for the National Championships. Six referees who have displayed excellence in their game calling were selected to represent Cal South at the Nationals. In order to help these refs with their own traveling expenses, Cal South gave checks to each of them in the amount of $250, while the State Referee Committee added another $100 to that amount, for a total of $350 to each referee. And congratulations to these six referees for their accomplishment:

The 2008 Cal South Presidents’ Summit

Over 100 Cal South league presidents and representatives showed up at the Home Depot Center on June 28th to attend the 2008 Cal South Presidents’ Summit. Attendees spent the warm and blustery Saturday afternoon caught up in discussions regarding Cal South initiatives for the coming year, as well as presentations and Q&A sessions on such topics as league and tournament sponsorship opportunities, small business opportunities, insurance policy and non-profit corporate governance. Following the Summit proper, attendees were treated to a buffet reception overlooking the field, where those that stuck around into the evening took in Chivas USA’s game versus the New York Red Bulls.

If you are a league president, this is an event that you do not want to miss in the future. Keep checking back at CalSouth.com for details on the next Cal South President’s Summit. We definitely hope to see all of you there next summer! CA L SOUTH 5 SOUTH 2008 ANNUAL REPORT

2009 TOURNAMENT GUIDE Where can you find the perfect tournament to fit your team’s needs? If you are a coach or team manager, then you should be aware that Cal South publishes an annual Tournament Guide that puts information about every single sanctioned tourna- ment within Cal South straight into the hands of its entire coaching membership. Readers of the Tournament Guide have easy access to a full listing of sanctioned tournaments throughout 2009, including entry deadlines, fees, age brackets, locations and vital contact information.

Cal South distributed 25,000 copies of the 2009 Tournament Guide in late December with a direct mailing to over 11,000 Cal South member coaches, managers and league VIPs. The remainder are being distributed at the “Big 3” annual soccer shows in early 2009: the NSCAA Coaches Convention in St. Louis in January, the US Youth Soccer Workshop in March, and Cal South’s own 2009 Soccer Nation Expo in the Los Angeles Convention Center on February 21 and 22.

If you are a Cal South coach, manager or league VIP, you should have already received your copy of the 2009 Tournament Guide. Copies will also be available for pick up at the Cal South Corporate Office. Regardless of how you get a copy, we hope that it helps you find the perfect tournament for you!

Cal South To Host 2009 Far West Regionals in Lancaster in June The US Youth Soccer Far West Regionals are being hosted by Cal South in 2009. Immediately after the Cal South National Cup decides its U19 champion for the year, teams from the 14 western states that make up Region IV will gather in Lancaster, California from June 15-21 to decide which teams deserve to move forward to the US Youth Soccer National Championships in Massachusetts in July.

Apart from giving our teams a prime opportunity to compete locally on a high level in front of their family and friends, it also allows Cal South to serve as a gracious host to its neighboring state associations as well. Cal South is honored to have been chosen as host to such a prestigious event, and asks all of its teams and members to take advantage of this chance to show our neighbors the level of excellence and professionalism we have achieved as a leading youth soccer organization.

Cal South Teams Up With Sports Path To Offer Free Online Parent Education

Cal South and Sports Path, the leader in online sports education courses, have formally announced an agreement designed to help bring parental soccer education to the forefront. Through this partnership, Sports Path will provide a Cal South-branded course on our website entitled “Preparing Your Child for Youth Soccer,” which is free to Cal South members interested in furthering their soccer parenting education.

“Parents play an ever increasing role in youth sports and the really smart sports organizations engage them and with work them,” said Robin Russell, founder, CEO and chairman of Sports Path. “Cal South is clearly one of North America’s leading youth sports organizations, and we are delighted to support their program to use e-learning as a means of reaching out to time-challenged parents.”

“We are very excited to join up with Sports Path in order to facilitate the growth of greater soccer knowledge throughout our membership,” said Cal South CEO John Weinerth. “Sports Path’s online courses are recognized as one of the best resources for sports education in the world, and we are proud to be able to provide access to these courses for the parents in Cal South.”

The Sports Path Parenting series consists of four different courses, all designed to help parents develop a greater understanding of their role in their child’s develop- ment within the sports landscape. The exclusive Cal South course “Preparing Your Child for Youth Soccer” will give parents free access to a course which has been specially adapted to fulfil the needs of Cal South members. Following this course, users can then move on to the remaining pair of courses – “Helping Your Child Compete Enjoyably” and “Assisting the Gifted Young Player” – which each require a $9.99 fee for purchase.

CA Cal South members can access these courses by going online to CalSouth.com and clicking on the “Free Cal South Soccer Parenting Course” button on the right-hand L SOUTH 6 SOUTH side of the homepage. This will take them to an introductory page which will give them instructions on registering for the course and then a link to the registration page on the Sports Path website. 2008 ANNUAL REPORT

US Soccer Directs Cal South to Prepare to Take Over as the Official Adult State Association

The U.S. Soccer Federation Board of Directors met on Saturday, November 22, 2008, and reached a decision regarding the application received from Cal South to replace CSA-South as the official adult association member for Southern California. The decision will appoint Cal South as the official adult association upon submission of an amended application which satisfactorily outlines a strategy of how Cal South will outreach and help transition the existing adult leagues, along with an amended governance structure that provides meaningful representation to the adult programs.

Cal South is extremely excited about working with all of the existing adult leagues and programs towards growing the game in Southern California. We welcome your involvement, interest, feedback and future membership. We look forward to building on the great tradition of adult soccer that has been established in Southern California over the last forty plus years and working together towards building the best soccer association in the world.

Over the next several months we will be conducting several layers of outreach which will include individual league meetings and presentations, larger venue outreach meetings, feedback surveys and updates through our magazine and other communication vehicles. Here are the future meeting dates, times and locations. Official approval of Cal South Adult Leagues will take place on March 13th, 2009 7:30AM- 10AM EST in Orlando, FL at the US Soccer National Council Meeting. Open to US Soccer AGM Registrants.

Referee Education at Cal South

Without them, there would be chaos on the field. You know the look: the uniform, the whistle, the yellow and red cards, sometimes an offside flag in their hand. What many people don’t realize is just how vital referees are to the sport of soccer. While some people spend a lot of time yelling about their calls, the fact of the matter is that you can’t hold a proper game of soccer without the referee.

Cal South wants its membership to understand that referees are an equally important part of the Cal South picture, as important as the coaches and players. As part of this recognition, Cal South offers an extremely comprehensive referee training and development program, with a variety of opportunities for young referees to get the training and knowledge they need to become the surest minders of the Laws of the Game they can be.

The series of Cal South referee education programs were developed by the State Referee Committee (SRC), and their depth often serves as a model for other state referee programs throughout the country. Some of the programs offered include:

• Referee Education and Training Courses • R9 Recreation Referee certification courses - Cal South certifies over 500 new youth referees in over thirty clinics annually through our R9 program (entry level USSF Certification for Referees) • The Cal South Advance Referee Development Program (ARDP) - recognized nationally for its develop- ment of top youth referees • Referee Mentoring Programs • The annual Referee Youth Academy

Dr. Donald L. Wilbur, a National Referee Emeritus, National Assessor, and National Instructor for both the USSF and the NISOA, will be presenting a variety of referee clinics at Soccer Nation Expo on February 21-22 at the L.A. Convention Center. For more information, please flip to the Expo section at the front of this magazine or go to www.SoccerNationExpo.com. To learn more about Cal South Referee Education programs and opportunities, please go to www.CalSouth.com and look under Referee Education.

CAL SOUTH AT THE 2008 ODP REGION IV CAMPS OD’93P Holdover SPO vs.T CalLIG SouthHT Game ’93 Holdover vs. Cal South Game Once more showing their dominance at the elite youth level, Cal South’s Olympic Development Program took charge at the 2008 US Youth Soccer ODP Region IV Camps. Divided between two venues – the boys at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon; the girls at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California – Cal South ODP players took part in a series of camps for each of four age groups (boys and girls ’92, ’93, ’94 and ’95) throughout the month of July. The annual ODP Regional Camps are a major component in the process of identifying players for the U.S. National Team and Pool rosters.

The eight Cal South ODP teams featured a total of 144 players; 110 of those players (76%) were asked to continue on at the camps as holdovers for the Region IV ODP pools. 59 of the 72 boys and 51 of the 72 girls were selected overall. Most impressive of all were the members of the ’94 boys team, with all 18 of its players being selected for their Regional Pool.

“The success that our players had in this year’s ODP evaluation events, such as the Regional Camps, can be directly attributed to a few key factors,” said Steve Hoffman, Cal South’s Director of Coaching Education and Player Development. “Not only does Cal South have some of the most fantastic clubs around, but the coaches on those clubs are doing an incredible job in developing these players. Also, Cal South has, without a doubt, some of the most competitive and deepest gaming circuits in the country. All told, this is a sure mix towards achieving the excellence that our players have shown.” ’93 Holdover Team Numerousbefore Cal South game players have already been chosen for the current pools and rosters of the US Youth National Teams. (A full chart of the Cal South players selected for each of those pools appears on the next page.) Cal South wishes to congratulate all of its ODP players and National selectees on their hard-earned success!

ABOUT THE CAL SOUTH ODP PROGRAM

The Cal South ODP is considered the finest program in the country. Cal South has won more national and regional championships than any other state association or any other ODP program in the country. Having already won a dozen U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic • Development Program National Championships since their inception in 2000, Cal South’s ODP continued to run with that success at the 2008 edition of the event. With Cal South • ODP teams representing Region IV in all four age and gender divisions at the tournament, two of those teams – the 1991 boys and the 1992 girls – captured titles at Pizza Hut •• Park in Frisco, Texas on Sunday, March 9. Cal South ODP teams have now captured 14 out of 38 titles at the Nationals (36%). • The Cal South 1992 Girls faced a North Texas team that had won 7-1 in their previous match, but Tawni Martino’s goal in the 26th minute was just enough for Cal South to put away the game, 1-0. Martino was given the Golden Boot award for the bracket, while Cal South’s keeper Chelsea Morales walked off with the Golden Glove.

“It was a tough game against the home team. It was a very physical game, but in the end we fought our way through. We separated ourselves with a fantastic strike,” said Cal South head coach Ranbir Shergill. “Being here they have the opportunity to be seen by a lot of college coaches and this is great exposure. Having ODP on your resume is big time.”

Cal South’s 1991 Boys team also took their title via a shutout, when they closed the door on Eastern New York, 3-0. Nicholas Grigoriev opened the scoring in the 27th minute, while eventual Golden Boot winner Christian Ramirez found the net twice, with a pair of goals in the second half. The team’s accomplishment is all the more remarkable considering that most of the players had to be replaced before the Regionals when all but two of the squad left to join the U.S. Soccer Development Academy.

“This was our best game played throughout the ODP season,” said Cal South head coach Sean Roche. “We have steadily improved. We played a tough New Mexico team in Regionals to get here and credit has to be given to the boys. After only being together for a short time, their commitment to the game is great.”

The other two Cal South ODP teams played in consolation matches at the Finals. The 1992 Boys defeated North Texas 2-1, behind a pair of goals from Daniel Castro and Moises

Orozco, while Cal South’s 1991 Girls squad tied Minnesota 2-2. Callie Payetta and Catherine Cabot each scored in the second half to put Cal South up late, before Minnesota tied it CA L up in the final minute. Cal South is extremely proud of all four teams, and congratulates them on their accomplishments. 25 SOUTH dependent Auditors dependent Association – South – Association Audited Financial Statements Statements Financial Audited and Other Financial Information Information Financial Other and With Report of In Years ended August and 31, 2008 2007 California Youth Soccer Youth California

NOTE 2 SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (CONTINUED)

Property and Equipment Property and equipment are stated at cost or, if donated, at fair value at date of donation. Provision for depreciation and amortization is computed using the straight- line method over the estimated useful lives of the properties, as follows:

Registration software 3 years Equipment and furniture 3 - 7 years Building improvements 39 years Building 39 years

Impairment of Long-lived Assets Cal South reviews the carrying values of its long-lived assets for possible impairment annually, or more frequently whenever events or changes in circumstances indicate that the carrying amount of the assets may not be recoverable. The measurement of possible impairment is based primarily on the undiscounted future operating cash flows without interest charges generated through the use of these assets during their remaining estimated useful life. The assessed recoverability of long-lived assets will be impacted if estimated future operating cash flows are not achieved. Based upon its most recent analyses, Cal South believes that there was no impairment of the carrying value of its long-lived assets as at and during the years ended August 31, 2008 and 2007.

Unrestricted Net Assets Contributions and allocations, the uses of which are not restricted by donors or grantors, are recorded in unrestricted net assets.

Revenue Recognition/Unearned Revenues Revenue from player registration fees, camps and tournaments are recorded on the accrual basis. Fees received in advance for future registration and sponsorship is considered unearned until the applicable year.

Donated Services A significant portion of Cal South’s programs are conducted by unpaid volunteers and committees. The value of this contributed time is not reflected in the accompanying financial statements because the volunteers’ time does not meet the criteria for recognition under SFAS No. 116, Accounting for Contributions Received and Contributions Made.

Functional Allocation of Expenses The costs of providing Cal South’s various programs and other activities have been summarized on their functional basis. Accordingly, certain costs have been allocated among the programs and supporting services benefited by the expenditure.
