Waste disposal costs to hit Sherburn Residents

As we move into the New Year both the County and District Councils will be looking at ways to meet further cuts to their budgets. This year both Authorities are considering charging sepa- rately for waste disposal services previously covered by your Council Tax bills, the District by charging for the collection of green (garden) waste and the County by charging you for visits to household waste recycling centres (HWRCs). The net cost of collecting green waste is about £460,000 per annum to the District Council, the contract cost being offset to some extent by “landfill credits” as the collection of green waste in Selby diverts 8,375 tonnes of waste from landfill to recycling. Whilst there is no additional cost to the householder for these services in Selby the Environmental Protection Act of 1990 allows Local Authorities to charge for collec- tion of waste, other than household waste, and indeed about one third of local authorities in England and Wales already charge between £20 and £69 for green waste collections. The County Council meanwhile is considering charging £1 entry for single trips to the HWRCs at Selby and Tadcaster from April to help cover the cost of disposal. What are your views? Do you have concerns about the potential impact on fly tipping and the increases in land fill of waste, or are you content to pay for a service previously provided through your Council tax payments if this enables the Council to maintain other services?

Community Informer Winter 2013 Edition 26 Page 5 ELMET LIONS CLUB

Elmet lions would like to say a big thank you to Emmerson doors, Mark Simon, Yorcabs, BBC. Radio York and the wildlife habitat preservation group for providing vehicles to tow our Santa sleigh around local villages during December

We would also wish to thank J.P.Plant for their kind loan of a generator when ours broke down. We also need to thank members of the W.I.at South Milford, Members of Sherburn parish Council and the many members of the public who helped in any way with the Santa runs.

December is the busiest time of year for lions clubs up and down the country and we hope that our visiting your street with the sleigh signaled the start of Christmas. Our thanks also go to people who through their generosity have made this year a good collection. This will ena- ble us to support many local schemes. In addition to touring the villages our Santa visited the British legion in South Milford for their Xmas party, he also visited Win- canton transport Christmas party and the mums and tinies also at South Milford.

As well as doing our Sleigh runs we have distributed approx 150 food par- cels around Sherburn and surrounding villages During the year Elmet lions put on fish and chip bingo nights for senior citizens at various centre’s in the area

We are always pleased to welcome enquiries from people who may be thinking of joining our club, during the year we support as many local events as we can and have lots of other activities that we get involved in. To find out more about us please contact [email protected] We meet once a month at Milford lodge hotel on the second Monday of the month. Lion President Doug Morleyl

Let’s clean up our village

Litter and dog mess remain a source of irritation to many residents of Sherburn. It seems such a shame that people continue to throw litter from their cars and dog owners allow their dogs to foul the footpaths without clearing it up.

Do you know that both are a criminal offence and you can be fined.?

The Community Association with its quarterly litter picks have tried hard to keep the village clean and there are many residents who regularly pick up litter. It was wonderful that the Scouts and Beavers joined in the last lit- ter pick and all future litter picks are going to be done in conjunction,. This is why we are moving the starting point for the litter pick up to the Scout Hut at the top of Eversley Park. Lets have pride in our historic village and keep it clean and tidy.

On the 17th December 2012, 18 Key Stage 4 students went on a five day visit to Paris,. Early on Monday morning we left a cold Sherburn and travelled for just a few hours to get to our hostel on Monday afternoon. Miss Dumaine, who led the trip, was very keen to start sharing the beauty of her home city and, after dropping our suitcases, we went straight to the Centre Pompidou, a mod- ern art museum and unusual building with all its pipes and staircases on the outside. After dinner we made our way to the Place de la Bastille, where some of us started our Christmas shopping. The next day, feeling refreshed, we headed to Fragonard Perfume museum. We were given a tour of the museum and played a game where you had to guess what the smell was! Only nice smells fortunately! After which we hopped on the Métro again to go for a Christmassy walk and lunch in the Montmartre district. Following lunch we went to a HUGE department store, Galeries Lafayette, but it was far too posh and expensive for us! That evening, we went for a stroll past the Notre-Dame cathedral and a crêpe in the Quartier Latin. On Wednesday morning we set off to the Louvre Museum with only one painting in mind: The Mona Lisa then it was off to The Eiffel Tower. Some of us even managed to drag a very nervous Miss Dumaine to the top floor to take some amazing views of the city. We then headed to the river for our boat trip talking us through the main monuments in Paris. In the evening, we went to do some Christmas shopping at the Christmas market on the most famous Parisian avenue: the Champs-Élysées.

On Thursday, we were all very excited to set off for the Walt Disney Studio in Disneyland ! It was wet and freezing so it wasn’t busy and we managed to get on all the best rides. We bought ourselves and our family and friends presents and we all had an amazing time, despite the rain and cold! That night, Miss Dumaine took us to the highest building in Paris, The Montparnasse Tower, for a night view of the city. It was really beautiful and we got to spot all the places we had visited from there.

On Friday, we did one last bit of shopping in the Forum des Halles, a huge underground shopping centre where we spent the last of our Euros. Then, it was time to say “au revoir” to France as we took the Métro one last time (we were pretty used to it by then!) to go to the airport. In no time at all we were back in Sherburn with our families.
