Introduction to Pack

Welcome to the School information pack for PE and Games.

The purpose of this pack is to provide parents and pupils with simple guidelines and tips on the Games and PE curriculum.

The pack will also cover guidelines on fixtures, match teas and codes of conduct.

There is a section to explain the kit requirements throughout the year, which I hope will make your lives as parents easier.

I hope that the pack will be of benefit. However please do not hesitate to contact me, or anyone within the Sports Department if you have any queries.

Mr Simon Mussellwhite Head of Sport

Saturday Morning Activities

On Saturday mornings, we offer an hour long coaching session for all children from Reception through to Year 6. The sport will be the major sport for the term (Football & Netball in Autumn, Rugby & Hockey in Spring and Cricket for all in the Summer). The sessions will be a combination of skills and games with the emphasis on fun! We believe that our Saturday morning practices are unique and contribute to our success on the sporting front. They also provide an excellent opportunity for you as parents to meet your child’s coach. If the session is not taking place, then it will always be posted in the Week Ahead which is emailed out from the school office. We look forward to your continued support on Saturday morning and encourage every pupil to attend! Also the CPA provide an excellent coffee and bacon roll service during the morning!!

Fixtures

Fixtures are generally held on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings. There are occasions when fixtures, especially cup games, have to be played on other days, including Sundays. It is expected that if your child is selected to play for the school, they honour this selection. If a pupil is unavailable due to a family commitment, one week’s notice in writing or email is expected.

Fixtures can be found in the calendar and team sheets will be emailed to parents at least 48 hours prior to a match, although this cannot always be the case when matches are within days of each other. Team sheets will display meeting times, match start times and collection venues and times.

Our aim is to provide matches for all pupils within the year, although this is not always possible with every fixture. We enter many tournaments, which unfortunately sometimes only involves ‘A’ team players, therefore on these few occasions, team selection is difficult, leaving pupils potentially disappointed. Managing success and disappointment is an integral part of participating in sport and we thank you in advance for helping us to manage this with your child. If you have any questions regarding team selection then please feel free to contact your child’s coach.

Fixtures are played both at home and away venues and we are proud of the support we have from our parents and we continue to encourage you to attend as many matches as possible. Our home venues for matches are either: Chinthurst School or Cricket Club (TCC). The addresses and postcodes of our opposing schools can be found on page 14.

Sports Information Pack Page 7

Match Teas

Match teas for both Chinthurst players and the visiting schools will be provided after each home game. It is an expectation that every player will stay for match tea whether it be at home or away. This is a vital part of school fixtures where the children get the opportunity to meet and converse with the opposition.

Parents are also encouraged to attend match tea after fixtures, which at home takes place in the Foyer. We also ask for our parents to assist us in serving these refreshments whenever possible. I thank you in advance for your continued support and assistance.

Off Games / PE

Pupils must have an ‘off games’ note signed by their parent / guardian if they are to be excused from sporting activities. This note should be handed on the morning of the activity to Mr Mussellwhite or an email sent to [email protected].

If a child is signed ‘off games’, then this would apply to all sporting/physical activities including lunchtime, break times and afternoon clubs.

What kit do I require?

The full kit is available at Stevenson’s (formally Lester Bowden’s in Epsom High Street) and skins undergarment available from www.playerlayer.com. For uniformity we request that all pupils wear the ‘skins’ undergarment from ‘playerlayer’. Plain leggings may be worn by the boys during the Rugby season.

• All sports kit should be correctly labelled.

• All pupils should have a full school tracksuit in their kit bags whenever they have sport, and will not be allowed to attend sports fixtures without one.

• After practices, pupils will often be allowed to leave in a full school tracksuit; if they do not have this they will be asked to change into full school uniform.

GUM SHIELDS & SHIN PADS

There will be an OPRO Gum shield fitting in early September. This company provides dental gum shields which we would encourage all pupils to buy. Gum shields are easily lost and therefore, we would also encourage you to purchase a couple of cheaper gum shields from your local sports shop, which can remain in your child’s bag in case of emergencies. If your child does not have a gum shield he cannot play hockey or rugby! The school will provide a spare but at a cost of £5 per gum shield, which is added to the school bill.

All pupils must wear shin pads when playing football by law. If your child does not have his shin pads with him, he will not be allowed to play football.

Optional Kit:

 Body armour (Rugby season)  Scrum cap (Rugby head protection) recommended  Running spikes (Athletics – Summer Term)

EARRINGS

It is in the children’s interest not to wear earrings on the days they have PE or Games lessons including swimming and matches. Therefore, to save the risk of a child removing earrings and losing them, or not being able to remove them themselves and having to miss a PE, Games, Swimming lesson or match it is best if they do not wear earrings on those days. Ideally it is advisable not to wear them at all as children often get involved in physical games at break times and we do not want to run the risk of any injury to any child.

Therefore, if children do wear ear studs they must be able to remove them and store them safely themselves otherwise they will not be allowed to partake in physical activities.
