2 GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME

INTROIT HYMN 1 The Lord is risen indeed: now is his work performed; now is the mighty captive freed, and death’s strong castle stormed. 2 4 The Lord is risen indeed: The Lord is risen indeed: then hell has lost his prey; attending angels, hear! with him is risen the ransomed seed Up to the courts of heaven with speed to reign in endless day. the joyful tidings bear. 3 5 The Lord is risen indeed: Then take your golden lyres, he lives, to die no more; and strike each cheerful chord; he lives, the sinner’s cause to plead, join, all ye bright celestial choirs, whose curse and shame he bore. to sing our risen Lord.

Thomas Kelly (1769-1855) Tune: St Michael (A&M NS 84)

The presiding priest greets all in the name of the Risen Lord

In the name of God: Father,  Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Christ is risen. Alleluia! He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

The deacon says

In baptism we died with Christ, so that as Christ was raised from the dead, we might walk in newness of life.

Let us receive new life in him as we confess our sins in penitence and faith.

Like Mary at the empty tomb, we fail to grasp the wonder of your presence. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Like the disciples behind locked doors, we are afraid to be seen as your followers. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.

3 Like Thomas in the upper room, we are slow to believe. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

The presiding priest sprinkles all with water as “Vidi Aquam” (I saw water) is sung

The presiding priest says the Absolution

May the God of love and power forgive you  and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. Amen.

Gloria in Excelsis is sung Gloria in excelsis Deo, Glory to God in the highest et in terra pax, and on earth peace, hominibus bonæ voluntatis. goodwill to all people. Laudamus te. Benedicimus te. We praise you. We bless you. Adoramus te. Glorificamus te. We worship you. We glorify you. Gratias agimus tibi, We give you thanks propter magnam gloriam tuam. for your great glory. Domine Deus. Rex cœlestis. Lord God. Heavenly King. Deus Pater omnipotens. God the Father Almighty. Domine Fili unigenite, O Lord, the only begotten Son, Jesu Christe. Jesus Christ. Domine Deus. Agnus Dei. Lord God. Lamb of God. Filius Patris. Son of the Father. Qui tollis peccata mundi, You take away the sin of the world, miserere nobis. have mercy on us. Qui tollis peccata mundi, You take away the sin of the world, suscipe deprecationem nostram. receive our prayer. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, You are seated at the right hand of the Father, miserere nobis. have mercy upon us. Quoniam tu solus sanctus. For you alone are the holy one. Tu solus Dominus. You alone are the Lord. Tu solus Altissimus, Jesu Christe. You alone are the most High, Jesus Christ. Cum Sancto Spiritu, With the Holy Spirit in gloria Dei Patris. Amen. in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

The presiding priest says the Collect of the Day Let us pray. O God, your Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: open the eyes of our faith, that we may see him in his redeeming work; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. 4 THE LITURGY OF THE WORD [sit] A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. 2:14a, 36-41

On the day of Pentecost, Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd, ‘Let the entire house of Israel know with certainty that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified.’ Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and to the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what should we do?’ Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him.’ And he testified with many other arguments and exhorted them, saying, ‘Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.’ So those who welcomed his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand persons were added to their number.

For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

PSALM 116 Please repeat after choir, then sing as indicated

1 I love the Lord who has heard my prayer, who bends down to hear my call. The cords of death entangled me: the grip of the grave took hold of me.

2 Then I called on the name of the Lord, “I beg you, save my soul!” Our Lord is gracious and just, our God is merciful. R

3 How can I repay the Lord for the goodness done for me? The cup of salvation I raise, and call on the name of the Lord.

4 To the Lord I will pay my vows before all the people. How precious the death of the saints, those who remain faithful to God! R

5 5 Lord God, I am your slave, the child of a faithful mother. You have loosed my bonds, you have set me free. R

6 A sacrifice of thanks I bring and call on your name. To the Lord I will pay my vows before all the people. R

7 I will pay my vows to the Lord in the courts of God. In the midst of Jerusalem. Alleluia! R

Version by Helen L Wright (b.1927) Reproduced with permission, TIS 71

A reading from the first letter of Peter. 1:17-23 If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God. Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God.

For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION & READING Please stand and sing the Alleluia with the Choir

TIS 257 6 Christ has been raised from the dead, giving us life in abundance; let us bring this good news to all people. Alleluia.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke. 24:13-35 Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. On that same day, two of the disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, ‘What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?’ They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, ‘Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?’ Jesus asked them, ‘What things?’ They replied, ‘The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see Jesus.’ Then he said to them, ‘Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?’ Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, ‘Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.’ So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Jesus; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?’ That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, ‘The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!’ Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

For the Gospel of the Lord, Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Sunday School Prayer – Mother Linda

Sermon – Jamie Miller 7 During Eastertide we say the Apostles’ Creed as a reminder of our baptism The deacon says

Let us affirm the faith of the Apostles. [stand]

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The presiding priest says

This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith: We believe in one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

THE PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL

The deacon says [please kneel or sit] Let us pray for the world and for the Church.

8 THE GREETING OF PEACE [stand] The risen Christ came and stood among his disciples and said, ‘Peace be with you!’ Then were they glad when they saw the Lord.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

You are invited to exchange a sign of peace with those around you During the Offertory hymn, a collection is taken up

OFFERTORY HYMN 1 3 Emmaus-bound on Easter Day, For as you spoke to them God’s word, two travellers walked along the way. explaining all they’d seen and heard, They’d once had hope, but hope had died they understood what God had done when you, O Lord, were crucified. and that a new day had begun. 2 4 When you appeared beside the two, They shared their home; you broke the bread. they could not see that it was you; They saw you, risen from the dead! but as they talked and shared their pain, That moment’s grace helped them to see you gave them hope and joy again. the gift of God’s eternity.

5 In scripture and at table, too, O Risen Lord, may we know you. And may your presence give us grace to share God’s love in every place. Luke 24:13-35 Text: © 2009 by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette Reproduced with permission Tune: Eisenach (A&M NS 119)

11 THE SENDING OUT OF GOD’S PEOPLE

Announcements are made after Communion

DISMISSAL HYMN [stand] 1 Most glorious Lord of life, that on this day didst make thy triumph over death and sin, and having harrowed hell, didst bring away captivity thence captive, us to win:

2 This joyous day, dear Lord, with joy begin, and grant that we for whom thou diddest die, being with thy dear blood clean washed from sin, may live for ever in felicity:

3 And that thy love we weighing worthily, may likewise love thee for the same again; and for thy sake, that all like dear didst buy, with love may one another entertain;

Paschal Candle 2017

Mother Jenny’s beautiful artwork for this year’s Paschal Candle is inspired by the Five Marks of Love reflections that many of us followed during Lent: the hands on the cross, which are pierced with incense-bearing nails, mark the five loving wounds of our Lord at the crucifixion, below is the image of the Holy Spirit – the Giver of Life – descending upon the form of the resurrected body of Christ. Around the base of the candle are the five missional themes of: TELL – Proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom, TEACH – Teach, baptise, and nurture new believers, TEND – Respond to human need by loving service, TRANSFORM – Transform unjust structures, challenge violence of every kind, and pursue peace and reconciliation, TREASURE – Strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth. 15
