Simon Blight – a local para rider and true inspiration – tells us his journey and how he found the strength to believe in himself and make the ‘impossible’ possible. Simon began riding at a young age before turning professional when he was sixteen. Like many young equestrians, Simon’s hobby soon became a career and he was regularly taking to the Showjumping circuit, aspiring to the likes of Harvey Smith. In addition to Showjumping Simon competed up to advance medium Dressage – he understood that his Showjumpers would benefit from the discipline of dressage and ultimately improve their performance in the ring. When not competing Simon would assist horses suffering from behavioural problems as well as run his own yard. At the age of 35 Simon’s world changed. After months of being transferred around hospital wards he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis – a disease affecting the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. Understandably Simon was knocked back and spent the next two years away from the equine world with his wife Lyn and good friend, Katie, taking over the care of the yard and horses. Moments from giving up everything he was pulled back from the edge went on to win the British Showjumping Para Club Title and louder than ever!
