Last month we told you about blockbusters Hamil- ton and Waitress. Now you can add two more to your list: School of Rock – The Musical and The Color Purple. I did know quite what to expect from School of Rock - The Musical at Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre (1634 Broadway). DRAMATURGY GUIDE School of Rock: The Musical The National Theatre January 16-27, 2019 Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber Book by Julian Fellowes Lyrics by Glenn Slater Based on the Paramount Film Written by Mike White Featuring 14 new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber and all the original songs from the movie Packet prepared by Dramaturg Linda Lombardi Sources: School of Rock: The Musical, The Washington Post ABOUT THE SHOW Based on the hit film, this hilarious new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school to earn a few extra bucks. To live out his dream of winning the Battle of the Bands, he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band. While teaching the students what it means to truly rock, something happens Dewey didn’t expect... they teach him what it means to care about something other than yourself. For almost 200 years, The National Theatre has occupied a prominent position on Pennsylvania Avenue – “America’s Main Street” – and played a central role in the cultural and civic life of Washington, DC. Located a stone’s throw from the White House and having the Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site as it’s “front yard,” The National Theatre is a historic, cultural presence in our Nation’s Capital and the oldest continuously operating enterprise on Pennsylvania Avenue. The non-profit National Theatre Corporation oversees the historic theatre and serves the DC community through three free outreach programs, Saturday Morning at The National, Community Stage Connections, and the High School Ticket Program.

It doesn’t take long to start recognizing her calm, intelligent gaze in conceptual dramas and cerebral musicals—she is perhaps best known for her work with Elevator Repair Service. Two years ago, I saw her in Jackie Sibblies Drury’s “Really,” and marvelled at how her every insouciant gesture served both to convey and to mask the emotion at the heart of Drury’s consideration of visual art and personal pain. Schaal’s own works, likeG “oGoin gFos rothn,” from 2016, are experimental, deftly collaged meditations on history, race, andA thbeo mutov Teomwennts of individual bodies and entire populations.
