Chino Valley Unified School District Revised 8/2014 Sixth Grade Physical Education Standard 1 – Demonstrate motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. Manipulative Skills Standard 1.1 – Volley an object repeatedly with a partner, using the forearm pass. Balloon Volleyball Equipment: Balloons Formation: put desks across the middle of the classroom. This is a game where the students try to hit the balloon over the desks without letting it hit the ground. The object is to not let the balloon hit the ground. Like volleyball, you can hit the ball up to three times in order to hit it to the opponents’ side. Teams can be made up of 1-6 players on each team. Variation: A marble can be put into the balloon to give it an erratic pat. Beach Ball Volleyball Equipment: Volleyball net, 3-4 beach balls Teams are set up on either side of the net. Play is continuous. Balls are to be hit over the net or hit in the air between teammates. When a ball falls, a point is awarded to the opponents. When time is up, points are tallied up and a winner is declared. Shuttle Toss Equipment: Volleyball Students get into two lines that face each other. The player in the front of the line passes the volleyball to the other line, and moves to the end of their line. Play is continuous. Manipulative Skills Standard 1.2 – Strike a ball continuously against a wall and with a partner, using a paddle for the forehand stroke and the backhand stroke. Shuttle Toss Equipment: Paddle, small ball Students get into two lines that face each other. The player in the front of the line hits the ball to the other line, and moves to the end of their line. Play is continuous. Paddle Tap Equipment: Wooden paddle, or racket, or other striking tool Students will hit a soft ball between themselves and a partner. Play will be continuous. Squash Equipment – Racket, ball Students will play the game of Squash. Squash is played with two players alternating hitting a ball against a wall. Points are awarded when your opponent can not hit the ball onto the wall. Official rules are found the appendix. Manipulative Skills Standard 1.3 – Strike an object consistently using a body part, so that the object travels in the intended direction at the desired height. Soccer Juggle Equipment – Soccer ball Students will take a soccer ball and “juggle” the ball with different body parts, not including their hands. The object is to keep the ball continuously moving without touching the ground. Tetherball Official rules are located in the Appendix Hacky Sack Equipment – Foot bag Players play in a circle. The first player begins play by tossing the foot bag to another player. Players use any body part, other than hands or arms, to keep the ball in the air. More than one circle can play and the team that keeps the ball up the longest is declared the winner. Setting the Volleyball to Yourself Equipment – Volleyball The player will set a volleyball in the air continuously, without letting it touch the ground. Tennis Ball Hockey Equipment – Wooden paddle, small ball Each player needs a paddle. A “goal” will be set behind each player. Both players will defend their goal, while trying to hit the ball into the opponent’s goal. One point will be awarded to each goal. Paddle Tap Equipment – Paddle, ball Examples: 1. Students will hit a ball continuously against a wall using a paddle. 2. Students will hit the ball continuously while walking. 3. Students will hit the ball continuously while standing on one foot. 4. Students will hit the ball continuously while jumping on one foot. 5. Students will try to strike two balls continuously, without them hitting the ground. 6. Students will walk backwards and continuously strike the ball. Manipulative Skills Standard 1.4 – Dribble and pass a ball to a partner while being guarded. Combatives Equipment: Basketball or soccer ball, flags This game is played with 2 players. Each player will get a ball, and a belt with flags. The players will dribble the ball, while trying to take their opponents flag. When a flag is taken, the game starts over. Dribbling Flag Tag Equipment: Basketball or soccer ball, flags Players will each get their own ball and flag with belts. Players will continuously dribble their ball, while they are trying to take an opponents flag. When a player’s flag is taken they are out of the game. The teacher will then blow the whistle and all players will return to the game. Soccer Ball 2 vs. 1 Equipment: Soccer ball, goal Two players will dribble and the ball toward the goal. They will pass the ball back and forth, while not allowing the defender to take the ball. When the offensive players get into the striking range, they shoot the ball at the goal. Rhythmic Skills Standard 1.5 – Throw an object accurately and with applied force, using the underhand, overhand, and sidearm movement patterns. Carnival Hacky Sack Equipment: Foot bag, milk carton Players will throw a footbag at empty mild cartons. The object is to knock the milk cartons down. The game can be played overhand, underhand, and sidearm. Frisbee Golf Equipment: Frisbees Each player will get their own disc. At the beginning of every hole, players will “tee off”. After they have “teed off”, players will stand next to their disk. Then on the teacher’s command, players will throw their disc toward the hole. When the disc strikes the hole, that player will wait to move to the next hole. Holes can be different stationary items found around campus. Passing Performance Equipment: Balls, hula hoops Each student gets three balls to throw. The student must stay behind a designated throwing line and use all three ways to throw the ball. Scoring zones are set by using hula hoops. The closest hoop is worth one, and the next is worth 3, and the furthest is worth 5 points. Players can throw at whichever hoop they wish. Rhythmic Skills Standard 1.6 – Perform folk and line dances. Popcorn – Words on following pages The popcorn dance is a type of line dance. Tush Push - Words on following pages The Tush Push is a type of line dance. Cowboy Boogie - Words on following pages The Cowboy Boogie is a type of line dance. Elvira - Words on following pages Elvira is a line dance. Kokomo - Words on following pages The Kokomo is a type of line dance. Alunelul - Words on following pages This is a Romanian folk dance. Bingo Waltz - Words on following pages This is an Austrian folk dance. Mayim - Words on following pages This is an Israeli folk dance. Combinations of Movement Patterns and Skills Standard 1.7 – Develop, refine, and demonstrate routines to music. Dance Vocabulary Since a dance is really just a succession of step patterns, it helps the kids to have a DANCE VOCABULARY. A DANCE VOCABULARY consists of words that describe how a dancer should move to complete a given pattern of steps. Here are some of the step patterns used in the dances described in this syllabus, as well as some others you and the children could consider. TERM DESCRIPTION HOME The position where you start a step pattern or dance FAN Keep heel at HOME while moving the rest of the foot ¼ rotation to the side, then back TOUCH Bring one foot next to the other foot, without a weight-shift HEEL TOUCH Touching the floor with the heel just in front of HOME, then placing it at HOME TOE Touching the floor with the toe just behind HOME, then placing it at HOME SIDESTEP Stepping to the side with one foot, bringing the other foot up to it, and then stepping again with the first foot SLIDE Stepping to the side (or forward) with one foot and sliding the other foot up to it SHUFFLE Stepping right, left, right or left, right, left HEELS APART Rotating both heels apart, then together again VINE Placing one foot to the side, placing the second foot behind and pas the first foot, and placing the first foot again to the side SCUFF or BRUSH Swinging the leg forward and scraping the floor with the heel ¼ TURN or PIVOT Stepping forward with one foot and turning with both feet on the floor ¼ turn to the direction indicated ½ TURN or PIVOT Same as ¼ turn, except turn ½ in the direction indicated STEP BACK Take small backward steps as indicated ROCK FORWARD Placing the foot forward and shifting weight on it, then returning HOME ROCK BACK Placing the foot back and shifting weight on it, then returning HOME KICK A low forward kicking motion ¼ SPIN Stepping forward with one foot and spinning on that foot only ¼ turn in direction indicated ½ SPIN Same as ¼ SPIN, except spin ½ in the direction indicated MILITARY TURN Pivot ¼ turn to direction indicated after placing weight on the heel of one foot and the toe of the other (can be repeated up to four times CHARLESTON Stepping forward with right foot kicking left foot forward, stepping back with left foot to HOME, and stepping with right foot behind HOME JAZZ BOX Crossing right foot with right foot behind HOME stepping back with left foot, placing right foot at HOME, and placing left foot at HOME Dance Steps “Monster Mash” This may be a Halloween line dance favorite with your students. The goal with this dance is to show contrast in style of movement.
