The thesis explores 'myth-revision' in selected works of Fantasy fiction. Myth- revision is defined as the retelling of traditional legends, folk-tales and other familiar stories in such as way as to change the story's implied ideology. (For example, Angela Carter's 'The Company of Wolves' revises 'Red Riding Hood' into a feminist tale of female sexuality and empowerment.) Myth-revision, the thesis argues, has become a significant trend in Fantasy fiction in the last three decades, and is notable in the works of Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman and Philip Pullman.

  • 5.0-6.0 the Lost Gate Card, Orson Scott 5.8 Danny North Knew From
5.0-6.0 The Lost Gate Card, Orson Scott 5.8 Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different, and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an outself. He grew up in the rambling old house, filled with dozens of cousins, and aunts and uncles, all ruled by his father. Their home was isolated in the mountains of western Virginia, far from town, far from schools, far from other people. There are many secrets in the House, and many rules that Danny must follow. There is a secret library with only a few dozen books, and none of them in English — but Danny and his cousins are expected to become fluent in the language of the books. While Danny's cousins are free to create magic whenever they like, they must never do it where outsiders might see. Unfortunately, there are some secrets kept from Danny as well. And that will lead to disaster for the North family. The Gate Thief Card, Orson Scott 5.3 In this sequel to The Lost Gate, bestselling author Orson Scott Card continues his fantastic tale of the Mages of Westil who live in exile on Earth in The Gate Thief, a novel of the Mither Mages. Here on Earth, Danny North is still in high school, yet he holds in his heart and mind all the stolen outselves of thirteen centuries of gatemages.

THE The Magazine Of Genesis Sci-Fi October 2013 The Magazine Of Genesis Sci-Fi September 2013 Hello, one and all, welcome back to Genesis. First of all, I would like to thank Paul Belsey for last Chairman: month’s programme, and it was so good to see some old Paul Russell favourites not seen in a long time. This month sees the return of Matt as programme editor and quiz master. Now, Vice Chairman this month I have already seen a copy of the programme; David Offen-James unlike last month; and know it is up to Matt’s usual high standard of illustrious innovation (We’re also showing the Treasurer: original Star Trek episode Spock’s Brain - Ed). The choices Matthew Greet for the film vote are somewhat different, but what else would we expect from Matt? Events Secretary: Paul Belsey Now I am “semi” retired, and by this I mean working longer and harder than I ever did when in full time Membership employment, it was with some surprise that I looked at Secretary: my calendar and noticed it was already October! Now of Louise Stanley cause this is probably not news to you, but I thought ‘oh my goodness, where has the year gone to?’ The drawing of Honorary President: the evenings, the fact that I am now going to work in the Jeremy Bulloch dark (often returning in the dark as well) could, of course been construed as clues, but as I have often remarked Website: before I can sometimes be ‘not the sharpest tool in the www.genesis-sf.org.uk box’.

Anything But Your Traditional StoryBy Matthew KresalWhen I first listened to The Stones Of Venice I admit I wasn't hugely impressed with it. However as I've been going back and listening to the firsts season of audio stories for the eighth Doctor from Big Finish I was surprised to discover that it was a much better story this time round. Not only that but I came to really enjoy and appreciate this classically inspired tale of Venice's final hours, a cult worshiping a dead woman, amphibious gondoliers, an ageless duke and his lost love.Paul McGann and India Fisher given nice performances as the Doctor and Charley. This was the first story they recorded together (although it's the third in proper story order) and the chemistry between them is fantastic to listen to. McGann's performance is interesting as this was his first outing as the Doctor since the 1996 TV movie and there echoes of that performance to be heard in this story (such as this Doctor's ability to pick up on the pasts of other characters almost instantly).

  • Signatures of the Possible: Writing and Political Rupture in the Archives of Industrial Unionism
SIGNATURES OF THE POSSIBLE: WRITING AND POLITICAL RUPTURE IN THE ARCHIVES OF INDUSTRIAL UNIONISM By MICHAEL VASTOLA A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2010 1 © 2010 Michael Vastola 2 To my parents, Janis and Anthony Vastola, and to my wife, Jessica Livingston This would not be possible without their love and almost pathological generosity 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation has benefited from the advice and guidance I have received throughout my time at the University of Florida. My dissertation director Sidney Dobrin consistently encouraged experimentation and even audacity in my writing. My committee members supplemented that license to experiment with some brutal lessons during my exams. John Leavey coached me into a deeper understanding of what was at stake in the differences between the theories I was then ham-handedly trying to compare. Raul Sanchez compelled me to clarify my ideas and to more rigorously articulate their relationship to existing scholarship in my field. Those difficult lessons, as well as the valuable encouragement of my outside reader, Robert Hatch, were instrumental in shaping the document I would ultimately defend. The drafts of several of my chapters benefited significantly from the advice of my fellow traveler, Jeffry Ginger Rice, who was even more valuable in his capacity as a sounding board for my incessant complaining about academic conventions. But my wife, Jessica Livingston, was just as important an outlet for my frustrations. Without her encouragement and vocal insistence that I finish in a timely manner, this project would have surely stalled numerous times, and might have even been abandoned.
