Olympian Visits Cathays High school By Katie Moore, Sixth Form Pupil This autumn term at Cathays High School we had a special visit from Olympic gymnast, Frankie Jones. Frankie won 6 medals at the last commonwealth games in Glasgow for Wales, 5 sliver, and 1 gold. She also competed in the London 2012 Olympics representing Great Britain. The Cathays High School Sports Council decided to become part of the ‘Passing the Baton’ project with Sky Sports ‘Living for Sport’ programme. As part of the programme Cathays High School receives three visits from an elite athlete. We decided that Frankie Jones would be the right person to help us inspire more students at Cathays High to get involved in sport. During Frankie’s first visit she led an assembly for Year 9 students and talked about her journey through sport and took a question and answer session. She also took a PE lesson for some of our Year 7 girls. The girls learnt gymnastic routines and performed them in front of Frankie. Frankie showed the girls how to use ribbons used in rhythmic gymnastics. She also played gymnastic based games with our pupils. The whole lesson was great fun!
