Omar Yaghi’s Speech for 2017 Albert Einstein Science Award I want to thank the principals of the World Cultural Council, organizers of the Einstein World Award of Science Prize, and the generous hospitality of our hosts, Leiden University’s executive body, faculty, staff, and students. Please allow me to express my deepest appreciation to Lily Hernandez for her thoughtfulness and dedication to help bring all this together. I am deeply honored to join the ranks of distinguished scholars who were awarded this prize in years past. Ladies and Gentlemen, allow me to make the following brief remarks: As a child born to a refugee family, I firmly believe that each one of us is blessed with having an opportunity, a chance, a probability, to succeed in our chosen endeavor. I believe we are born with this opportunity and that we as individuals can work towards capturing it and, if we make the right decisions, we can grow and thrive. In other words, our ability to transform ourselves lies within us. I sincerely believe that this opportunity and the chance to succeed live in all of us. It is part of our DNA no matter who we are and where we come from. In my remarks here today, I wish to say something to those who may face at some point slim odds of success in their life, those who start at the lower rungs of the ladder, and those who experience difficulty and may feel sidelined by life’s twists and turns. I stand before you as a product of those slim odds and of a life of hardship such odds entail. -

Included are materials documenting his research; awards including the Nobel Prize in chemistry (1995); professional service; and his global efforts to educate the public and policymakers about stratospheric ozone depletion, global climate change, and related environmental issues. Materials document the public controversies surrounding the chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) theory of ozone depletion and efforts to negotiate international agreements, including the Montreal Protocol, to ban CFC production. -

Shanklin: Jonathan Shanklin, born 1953, September the 29 th , in Wrexham, Denbighshire. [Part 1 0:00:18] Lee: Oh right? North Wales? Shanklin: North Wales. [Part 1 0:00:20] Lee: I live in Shrewsbury, so I know. Shanklin: I was in Shrewsbury in September actually. [Part 1 0:00:24] Lee: What, professionally? Shanklin: Amateurly because I am also a botanist. In fact I have just been appointed the Co-recorder for Cambridgeshire and there was a Recorders’ conference in the Gateway. [Part 1 0:00:39] Lee: Would you say your father was an educated man? Shanklin: Yes. [Part 1 0:00:42] Lee: Tell me about him. Shanklin: Dad was a consultant geologist at McAlpines, the big construction company, and so he would go off prospecting all over the place. I remember when I was a child he had several visits to South Africa, when he was away for months at a time. Probably rather like me, going to the Antarctic for months at a time, repaying the compliment, if you like. My mum was also a geologist, but mostly a mother, but they were both members of the local geological society. Dad at one time was a president of it, and they had regular excursions, and as children myself and my brother would be packed into the bus which would go down lanes that were very very narrow. -

The Ozone Hole SCIENCE BRIEFING It’s nearly 30 years since the discovery of the Ozone Hole drew world attention to the impact of human activity on the global environment. Why is the ozone layer important? Is there a hole over the Arctic? The ozone layer is the Earth’s natural sunscreen that protects humans, plants Unlike Antarctica, which is a continent surrounded by oceans, the Arctic and animals by filtering out harmful UV-B radiation. Keeling me 23 (c)1998 by Annual Reviews. u Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, California 92093-0220 KEY WORDS: monitoring carbon dioxide, global warming ABSTRACT When I began my professional career, the pursuit of science was in a transition from a pursuit by individuals motivated by personal curiosity to a worldwide enterprise with powerful strategic and materialistic purposes. The studies of the Earth’s environment that I have engaged in for over forty years, and describe in this essay, could not have been realized by the old kind of science. Associated with the new kind of science, however, was a loss of ease to pursue, unfettered, one’s personal approaches to scientific discovery. Human society, embracing science for its tangible benefits, inevitably has grown dependent on scientific discoveries. It now seeks direct deliverable results, often on a timetable, as compensation for public sponsorship. Perhaps my experience in studying the Earth, initially with few restrictions and later with increasingly sophisticated interaction with government sponsors and various planning committees, will provide a perspective on this great transition from science being primarily an intellectual pastime of private persons to its present status as a major contributor to the quality of human life and the prosperity of nations.
