The UW Health Respiratory Therapist Senior position is responsible for performing home care directed services with patients and families, including the most complex chronic pulmonary impaired patient, family and home provider. Education of patient, family and home health care providers on equipment and patient care management is an integral part of this position. This position will provide support and care with oxygen, positive airway pressure, apnea monitor and patients.

This position is responsible for the interpretation of federal and state legislation, regulations, policies and procedures, which impact the department services. New products lines, HCPCS and reimbursements will be researched by this person. This position works with a large degree of independence, under the general supervision of the Home Care HME Manager.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide clinical services in the area of respiratory care to patients with chronic pulmonary disease in the inpatient, outpatient, and home setting.

1) Interfaces with inpatient respiratory therapy and departments in the development of discharge directed planning for respiratory home care patients. 2) Assess respiratory patient’s needs and progress. 3) Develop and document Plan of Care 4) Develops and provides patient and family education in the areas of respiratory home equipment and therapeutic interventions for home care. 5) Assesses needs of patient and the best choice of equipment to meet those needs. 6) Instruct patients and caregivers on proper use and care of equipment 7) Triage’s incoming calls for proper handling. 8) Trouble shoots respiratory equipment issues over the phone in an effort to best serve our patients and eliminate unnecessary exchanges/deliveries, etc. 9) Communicate with patients, caregivers and physicians changes in conditions and/or needs. 10) Performs pulmonary assessments and formulates recommendations to the physician, based on the established criteria for patients with chronic pulmonary disease referred to Home Care Services Program. 11) Provides a mechanism of long-term follow-up of patients who are involved in ongoing pulmonary home care programs through regularly scheduled visits, interim telephone consults and home visits. 12) Promotes teamwork through maintaining effective communication with appropriate staff. 13) Attends department meetings and in-services. 14) Conducts, participates in and attends educational meetings and seminars for healthcare workers, families and caregivers. 15) Provides respiratory care expertise to the Home Care Services Program and acts as vendor to all patients requiring respiratory equipment and supplies in the home setting. 16) Provides teaching and follow-up for the home oxygen and nasal PAP/RAD programs. 17) Arranges necessary referrals for traveling patients. 18) Stays current on new respiratory products and supplies. 19) Meets with appropriate vendors. 20) Assumes full responsibility for their own actions, professional skills, and attitudes. 21) Supports organization by being loyal, informs manager of areas of concern. 22) Participates in an on-call schedule for all home care services. 23) Performs other duties as assigned.

Graduate of COARC Accredited School of Respiratory Therapy Preferred Work Experience Minimum 1. Three (3) years of experience as a staff respiratory therapist 2. Recent (within the last 2 years) adult clinic experience OR 3. Recent (within the last 2 years) experience with coordination of respiratory durable medical equipment for the home. RRT Credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care OR 4. CRT with expectation of successful completion of RRT exam and credentialing within one (1) year.
