Details of the Real ID program: • How do I know if my identity has been verified? - Pull out your state-issued driver’s license. Is there a yellow star in the top right corner? Yes? Then you’re verified. You can use your verified license with the gold star to board a plane for a domestic flight. You will still need a passport to fly internationally. • What if I don’t have a Gold Star on my driver’s license? If your license is not verified with the Gold Star, then your license will NOT be enough ID to get you on an airplane. You will need to bring a US Passport for ID. Make sure your name on your passport matches the name on your boarding ticket. Make sure your passport is not expired. • How do I get a Real ID license? - You’ll need to bring a few extra documents with you when you get your license renewed. Here’s a quick list: a primary form of ID - either a US passport or US birth certificate; a secondary form of ID - some common options are your current license, a Social Security card, a marriage certificate; Proof of your Social Security number; Proof that you live in CT - 2 pieces of mail. Check the DMV website for details. • Summary - Starting Oct 1, 2020, you must have a Gold Star on your driver’s license in order to use your license as identification when flying within the United States. If you do not have a Gold Star, then you must use a Passport for identification when flying in the US. If you are flying internationally, you still need to have a valid Passport. *If you are a non-US citizen, you will need some extra documentation to get the Gold Star verified license from the DMV.
