  • [External] Opposing Superintendent's Recommended Attendance Area
Kathleen V. Hanks From: Peihua Jiang <peihuajiang@yahoo. com> Sent: Tuesday, August 27, 2019 11:36 AM To: Hcpss Redistricting Subject: [External] opposing Superintendent's Recommended AttendanceArea Adjustment Plan To whom it may concern, 1 am writing to express my concerns aboutthe superintendent's plan for redistncting I live in Polygon 1189. Though theplan does not seem to affect me much. ] am deeply concerned about the whole process and the misconceived proposal by Dr Martirano for the following reasons: 1. Community cohesion. Moving move than 7, 000children istoo disruptive and radical. On top ofthat, who to move and which school to move seem illogical, unfair, andnot well planned. In contrast the study conducted byIhe school board (feasibility stLidypaid bytaxpayer's money) provided reasonable andnot too dismptive options for solving over- crowding issue in HCPSS. We spent time, effort and money to conduct such a study. It appeared that it was well-received by the community, why should we abandon such a proposal? 2 Educationfirst. In hisproposal. Dr. Martiranoemphasized that equity is theunderpinning for hisstrategic call to actionand guides his decisions and strategies. His argament is thatall^students may haveaccess andopportunity to receivethe best educational serviceand sappons. I supportthis. However, I don't seethat simpiy shufflingstudents will make all students having full accessto the bestediicational sen/icesand supports. My understandingis thai all schoolshave the same or similar resources Howcome redistricting will help students'-" Ifwe really wantto help FARM students, weshould bemore creative than simple andarbitran, 'reshuffling withsuch negative impact for many communities in Howard Countv. 3. Stability. Howard County has been consiantly redistncting, which invokes a great deal ofstress and frustration.

  • 2021 Rio Grande Valley/Deep S. Texas Hurricane Guide
The Official Rio Grande Valley/Deep South Texas HURRICANE GUIDE 2021 IT ONLY TAKES ONE STORM! weather.gov/rgv A Letter to Residents After more than a decade of near-misses, 2020 reminded the Rio Grande Valley and Deep South Texas that hurricanes are still a force to be reckoned with. Hurricane Hanna cut a swath from Padre Island National Seashore in Kenedy County through much of the Rio Grande Valley in late July, leaving nearly $1 billion in agricultural and property damage it its wake. While many may now think that we’ve paid our dues, that sentiment couldn’t be further from the truth! The combination of atmospheric and oceanic patterns favorable for a landfalling hurricane in the Rio Grande Valley/Deep South Texas region can occur in any season, including this one. Residents can use the experience of Hurricane Hanna in 2020 as a great reminder to be prepared in 2021. Hurricanes bring a multitude of hazards including flooding rain, damaging winds, deadly storm surge, and tornadoes. These destructive forces can displace you from your home for months or years, and there are many recent cases in the United States and territories where this has occurred. Hurricane Harvey (2017), Michael (2018, Florida Panhandle), and Laura (2020, southwest Louisiana) are just three such devastating events. This guide can help you and your family get prepared. Learn what to do before, during and after a storm. Your plan should include preparations for your home or business, gathering supplies, ensuring your insurance is up to date, and planning with your family for an evacuation.

  • An Open Letter on Behalf of Independent Schools of New England
An Open Letter on Behalf of Independent Schools of New England, We, the heads of independent schools, comprising 176 schools in the New England region, stand in solidarity with our students and with the families of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The heart of our nation has been broken yet again by another mass shooting at an American school. We offer our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died and are grieving for the loss of life that occurred. We join with our colleagues in public, private, charter, independent, and faith-based schools demanding meaningful action to keep our students safe from gun violence on campuses and beyond. Many of our students, graduates, and families have joined the effort to ensure that this issue stays at the forefront of the national dialogue. We are all inspired by the students who have raised their voices to demand change. As school leaders we give our voices to this call for action. We come together out of compassion, responsibility, and our commitment to educate our children free of fear and violence. As school leaders, we pledge to do all in our power to keep our students safe. We call upon all elected representatives - each member of Congress, the President, and all others in positions of power at the governmental and private-sector level – to take action in making schools less vulnerable to violence, including sensible regulation of fi rearms. We are adding our voices to this dialogue as a demonstration to our students of our own commitment to doing better, to making their world safer.
