  • Al Brancato This Article Was Written by David E
Al Brancato This article was written by David E. Skelton The fractured skull Philadelphia Athletics shortstop Skeeter Newsome suffered on April 9, 1938 left a gaping hole in the club’s defense. Ten players, including Newsome after he recovered, attempted to fill the void through the 1939 season. One was Al Brancato, a 20- year-old September call-up from Class-A ball who had never played shortstop professionally. Enticed by the youngster’s cannon right arm, Athletics manager Connie Mack moved him from third base to short in 1940. On June 21, after watching Brancato retire Chicago White Sox great Luke Appling on a hard-hit grounder, Mack exclaimed, “There’s no telling how good that boy is going to be.”1 Though no one in the organization expected the diminutive (5-feet-nine and 188 pounds) Philadelphia native’s offense to cause fans to forget former Athletics infield greats Home Run Baker or Eddie Collins, the club was satisfied that Brancato could fill in defensively. “You keep on fielding the way you are and I’ll do the worrying about your hitting,” Mack told Brancato in May 1941.2 Ironically, the youngster’s defensive skills would fail him before the season ended. In September, as the club spiraled to its eighth straight losing season, “baseball’s grand old gentleman” lashed out. “The infielders—[Benny] McCoy, Brancato and [Pete] Suder—are terrible,” Mack grumbled. “They have hit bottom. Suder is so slow it is painful to watch him; Brancato is erratic and McCoy is—oh, he’s just McCoy, that’s all.” 3 After the season ended Brancato enlisted in the US Navy following the country’s entry into the Second World War.

  • Kash Beauchamp Was Born Into Baseball. His Father Jim
Kash Beauchamp was born into baseball. His father Jim Beauchamp spent 50 years in professional baseball, playing 10 in the Major Leagues for five different teams, was Bobby Cox's bench coach for 9 years where the Atlanta Braves won 9 division titles, a world championship, and three pennants. Jim spent the remainder of his career with the Braves as the supervisor for minor league field operations until his passing on Christmas day in 2008. The experience of growing up in the game obviously impacted Kash Beauchamp's career. After a stellar high school career as a three sport athlete, Kash accepted a scholarship to Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma where he was immediately drafted as the first overall pick in the January, 1982 Major League Baseball Draft ahead of such future stars as Kirby Puckett and Randy Meyers. Beauchamp began his pro career in Medicine Hat where he was a member of the 1982 Pioneer League Champion Medicine Hat Blue Jays. Kash garnered all-star honors after hitting .320 and playing terrific defense in center field. Beauchamp was promoted to the South Atlantic League in 1983 where he played on a star studded team that included, Cecil Fielder, Jose Mesa, Pat Borders, Fred McGriff and David Wells. In 1984 Beauchamp was again promoted to the Carolina League where while playing for the Kinston Blue Jays, he was the MVP of the Carolina League All-Star game by going 5-6 with two triples and a HR with 5 RBI. • Baseball in Japan and the US History, Culture, and Future Prospects by Daniel A
Sports, Culture, and Asia Baseball in Japan and the US History, Culture, and Future Prospects By Daniel A. Métraux A 1927 photo of Kenichi Zenimura, the father of Japanese-American baseball, standing between Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth. Source: Japanese BallPlayers.com at http://tinyurl.com/zzydv3v. he essay that follows, with a primary focus on professional baseball, is intended as an in- troductory comparative overview of a game long played in the US and Japan. I hope it will provide readers with some context to learn more about a complex, evolving, and, most of all, Tfascinating topic, especially for lovers of baseball on both sides of the Pacific. Baseball, although seriously challenged by the popularity of other sports, has traditionally been considered America’s pastime and was for a long time the nation’s most popular sport. The game is an original American sport, but has sunk deep roots into other regions, including Latin America and East Asia. Baseball was introduced to Japan in the late nineteenth century and became the national sport there during the early post-World War II period. The game as it is played and organized in both countries, however, is considerably different. The basic rules are mostly the same, but cultural differences between Americans and Japanese are clearly reflected in how both nations approach their versions of baseball. Although players from both countries have flourished in both American and Japanese leagues, at times the cultural differences are substantial, and some attempts to bridge the gaps have ended in failure. Still, while doubtful the Japanese version has changed the American game, there is some evidence that the American version has exerted some changes in the Japanese game.
