Anna Turmeau Dissertation 1 A Dissertation on the life and music of John Derek Sanders (1933-2003) By Anna Turmeau Anna Turmeau was born in York in 1983 and was educated in Wakefield. She was a chorister at Wakefield Cathedral and as a teenager sang with various choirs including the Rodolfus Choir under the direction of Ralph Allwood. She went on to study for a degree in music at the University of Birmingham graduating in 2004 before going on to gain a post-graduate diploma in oboe performance at the Birmingham Conservatoire a year later. During her time in Birmingham Anna worked as a freelance oboist and teacher as well as singing regularly in the Birmingham Cathedral Girls Choir and at the Birmingham Oratory. Having completed a Masters degree in post diploma orchestral training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2008 she immediately took up the position of second oboe/cor anglais with Orquestra do Norte, Portugal. During 2009 she returned to London to become co-principal oboe with Southbank Sinfonia. During her time as a member she performed the Bach double concerto for oboe and violin both in Anghiari, Italy and at the Wigmore Hall. Following this, Anna became a freelance oboist and teacher in and around the London area. She also performed the Haydn Sinfonia Concertante alongside Guy Johnston and Matthew Trussler in the Jersey Opera House. In May 2011, Anna became principal oboe in Orquestra Classica da Madeira where she is presently residing. Anna writes : “I met John Sanders first when as a member of Rodolfus Choir we performed Sanders Requiem in Gloucester Cathedral as part of the Three Choirs Festival. I was so inspired by this work and consequently decided to focus upon his works as the subject of my study. In 2004 whilst preparing this dissertation I conducted an interview with John at his home in Upton on Severn. What a generous man he was, furnishing me with scores and recordings of his compositions. Sadly I learned of his death before the study was completed and so decided to dedicate it to his memory.” 2 Table of Contents A Dissertation on the life and music of Sanders (1933-2003) and his place in the development of English choral music in the late Twentieth Century into the Twenty-First Century. Since the majority of Sanders’s output has been completed after his retirement as Organist and Master of the Choristers at Gloucester Cathedral in 1994, very little is written about his work. John Sanders unfortunately died during the course of my research so I have dedicated this dissertation to him. Much of the material included in my dissertation concentrates upon a personal study of his compositions. I have chosen specific pieces to look at in detail using examples of early, middle and late works from his compositional career in order to show compositional development and specific fingerprints in his style. Sanders directed at the Gloucester Three Choirs Festival for many years and one can see that in his own music, his style is deeply rooted in the strong Twentieth Century Church music tradition, exemplified in the works of his predecessors at Gloucester Cathedral including Herbert Sumsion and Herbert Howells. I have attempted to illustrate how Sanders drew upon the influences of previous composers whilst at the same time being inspired by a deep religious faith and love of the Gloucestershire countryside. All of Sanders’s compositions were composed in response to commissions. As a consequence, his compositional style in individual works reflects his sensitivity to the needs of particular performance resources. He also gave a personal response to texts and towards the sympathies of both audience and to those who commissioned and performed his works during his lifetime. Having completed my dissertation and having studied Sanders’s music in detail, I believe him to be a major contributor to the repertoire of English Church music. Despite his music being indebted to influences from the first half of the Twentieth Century, his works are not mere pastiches but carry the stamp of his individual style. This dissertation has attempted detailed analytical study and critical appraisal of these compositional qualities, which have yet, to date, to be fully acknowledged by the contemporary musicologist. This dissertation is dedicated to the life and music of John Derek Sanders who sadly died on the 23rd December 2003. 5 Chapter One Introduction In my introduction I shall attempt to outline the personal and musical background of John Sanders. I will also outline my intentions for the following chapters of my dissertation. Dr. Roy Massey described him in a recent letter as ‘a great human being’. He also mentions him as being

GLOUCESTER CATHEDRAL ORGAN SCHOLARSHIP The Dean & Chapter of Gloucester Cathedral annually seek to appoint an organ scholar for each academic year. He/She will play a key role in the Cathedral music department, working closely with Adrian Partington (Director of Music), Jonathan Hope (Assistant Director of Music), Nia Llewelyn Jones (Singing Development Leader) and Helen Sims (Music Department Manager). The organ scholarship is open to recent graduates or to gap-year applicants of exceptional ability. Duties The organ scholar plays for Evensong every Tuesday, and in addition plays the organ or directs the choirs as necessary when the DoM or the ADoM is away. He/She will also play for many of the special services which take place in the Cathedral, for which additional fees are paid (see remuneration details below). The organ scholar is fully involved with the training of choristers and probationers and the teaching of theory and general musicianship. They will also be expected to help with the general administration of the music department, attending a weekly meeting and assisting other members of the department in the music office. Gloucester Cathedral Choir Today’s choir is the successor to the boys and monks of the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter, who sang for daily worship nine centuries ago. The choir of today stems from that established by Henry VIII in 1539, consisting of 18 choristers (who receive generous scholarships to attend the neighbouring King’s School), 12 lay clerks and choral scholars. The choir plays a major part in the internationally renowned Three Choirs Festival, the world’s oldest Music Festival, which dates back to 1715.

  • Music Listening for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday David Hurd, Mus.D
Music Listening for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday David Hurd, Mus.D. Organist and Music Director Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, NYC While our Holy Week liturgies this year will be missing their usual live choral aspect, a great wealth of recorded choral music is available to us that may assist us in our reflections as we experience these great days of the church year in a different way. The repertoire of choral music for Holy week is indeed very vast and rich, but I will limit my references to just a few works each for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. All of these pieces have been sung at Saint Mary’s in past years and some were intended to be sung again this year. The YouTube links which I have provided come from a variety of musicians and places. I hope you will find devotional focus and spiritual benefit in listening to these choral compositions and meditating on the words being sung. Although this music comes to us by electronic means, it was, at some point, live when it was sung before an electronic recording device. Voices singing together have a unique ability, among musical instruments, to impart a sense of community even when transmitted indirectly. Some of the videos have scrolling scores which may enhance your participation in the interaction of the offering and receiving of this music. Watching and listening to these recordings may lead you to sample others as well. Maundy Thursday My Maundy Thursday selections include the Gloria from Arvo Pärt’s Missa Syllabica which was scheduled to be sung at St.

  • Listening to the Voice of God Through Music
LISTENING TO THE VOICE OF GOD THROUGH MUSIC A Lecture delivered by Dr. John Sanders at the Quiet Day, at Glenfall House, Charlton Kings near Cheltenham on 29 th March 2003. EDITORIAL NOTE : The following is a transcript taken from hand-written notes made by John Sanders, and fleshed out (just a bit) in order to establish a narrative. His audience at Glenfall House was not made up of people who were all musicians, but of people from a wide variety of backgrounds – and all meeting within a Christian environment in the days before Easter. Throughout the lectures, John illustrated his points with musical examples. There is no accurate record of the precise examples which John used, so in an attempt to help the reader, I have taken the extreme liberty of suggesting what performances of the music he may well have used. However copyright regulations do not permit direct access to those examples from within this text. The references are quite cheaply obtained by way of iTunes and the following is a list to aid your understanding of John’s illustrations. His cantata, Urbs Beata, is not available on recording. This a great pity because the piece was commissioned for the 2001 Gloucester Three Choirs Festival with the specific intention of providing a reasonably challenging extended piece of musical and spiritually-uplifting opportunity for Choral Societies without the problem of spending a large amount of cash on orchestras and soloists. Within these lecture notes I have provided the text from the specific sections John refers to. However, on the web-site there is also a pdf file (Urbs Beata text) of the programme notes (copyright © Jonathan Hadfield 2001) together with the complete text (again copyright © Jonathan Hadfield 2001) so that conductors and musical directors may be motivated into exploring further the chance of performing this very fine work.

  • Wells Cathedral Choir Rehearse Under the Direction of Their Organist and Master of the Choristers, Matthew Owens
Vol. 7 No. 9 Wells Cathedral Choir rehearse under the direction of their Organist and Master of the Choristers, Matthew Owens. I am pleased to welcome you all to a new era in the ongoing life of the Federation of Cathedral Old Choristers Associations. We live in an ever changing world, and FCOCA is no exception. On a very sad note Michael Barry editor of this publication for many years died on 10 th March 2016 after a long illness. Michael had devoted much time and energy to revitalising the magazine for which we all owe him a great debt of gratitude. Circumstances have worked against us but after much discussion it was agreed at the Wakefield AGM this year that an electronic publication would be prepared which could be read on a computer or printed in the high street. The result is this publication which is as far as we could establish a complete set of reports sent from the various associations. If there are any omissions in this edition please accept my apologies. We have tried very hard! We have had a number of other changes on the committee recently. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ian Henderson and Richard Belton for their many years of service as Chairman and Secretary. If you would like to join the committee as Magazine Editor or Secretary you would be most wel- come. Alastair Pollard.
