1. TRAINING

1. 1 EXTENSION OFFICERS A total of 15 Agricultural Extension officers (agriculture experts who train gardeners) at Addis Ababa, , , , and Awassa were given on-job training by DAI technical team at respective working areas. The training was basically given vegetable agronomy, household drip irrigation, organic crop fertilization, crop protection and on basic farm record keeping.

Additionally, poultry management at household level has been included in the officers training, the office of agriculture assisted in providing experts.

1. 2 CAREGIVERS/ LEAD & FOLLOWER GARDENERS Following the their on job training, the Agricultural extension officers in turn trained beneficiaries in at two levels (lead gardeners and follower gardeners). In this effort 399 lead gardeners (innovative gardeners that lead other 9 followers) and 3,135 follower gardeners were trained. The training was given both in the class room and in the field for practical exercise. During the training sessions, how the gardens impact the production of food for the household and the income from the garden are emphasized.

A total of 2,150 improved breeds of chickens were distributed to 535 beneficiaries in Bahir Dar, Gondar, Dessie, Adama and Addis Ababa program areas. So far in Bahir Dar, Gondar and Dessie program areas, a total of 8,561 eggs were laid. Beneficiaries consumed 51% of the eggs and sold the rest. Some beneficiaries started to hatch out the eggs and are trying to expand chickens farm.

4. VEGETABLE DAYS Vegetable days are used as experience sharing events, people have a chance to learn, comment, suggest on what has been done in the field and at the same time target groups get opportunity to express what challenges persisted and what lessons learnt, In this period, Five big vegetable Days were conducted in Adama program and Bahir Dar program areas. In Adama Kale Hiwot Church MEDAN ACTs Wonji & Adama projects and Social Welfare Association (SWDA) conducted vegetable days. In Amhara program area Mekdem national association of Bahir Dar, celebrated a vegetable day on group garden place in

2 URBAN NUTRITION PROGRAM FOR HIV/AIDS-AFFECTED CHILDREN AND WOMEN: BIANNUAL REPORT Bahir Dar. During the occasion about 400 invited guests from municipalities, technical partner agencies, NGOs and other organizations attended the event.

5. PARTNERSHIP

5.1 PEPFAR PARTNERS The Urban nutrition garden that is implemented in partnership with local NGO implementing partners proved improving the nutrition and income levels of target beneficiaries. DAI is working within the PEPFAR health network model as one of the palliative care providers. Target beneficiaries are benefiting from the net work as the different services provided by the PEPFAR partners in the network complement each other to support the households.

5.2 IMPLEMENTING PARTNERS DAI maintains a strong link with 22 indigenous NGOs/Implementing Partners (List annexed to this report) in the different operational urban centers. These NGOs have experiences of working in the area of OVC and women focused programs in their respective communities.

5.3. TECHNICAL PARTNERS DAI is working in alliance with town/city administrations in all program implementation areas. City administration and Kebeles are the most vital governmental structures that are in charge for making available land for gardeners and also in most cases, participate in beneficiary identification. Offices of urban agriculture & health are technical partners,as they participate in providing trainings to agricultural extension officers and target beneficiaries in collaboration with the respective area DAI staff.

6. REFERRAL LINKAGES The urban nutrition gardens of DAI link PLWHAs with the community services, health center, and hospital levels as part of a major move towards strengthening and scaling up a comprehensive continuum of care in the PEPFAR Ethiopia health network model.

The program uses community outreach workers and agricultural extension officers of the respective implementing partners who are working within the communities where health service clients are and are interfaces with one of the health facilities linked to their working areas. As a result, the target groups services related to HIV/AIDS has been improved (Table 3)

8. PROGRAM MONITORING

8.1 STAFF MEETING DAI annual staff meeting was held on January 15th, 2008. During the annual activity review meeting held at Awassa, program implementation statuses against the project annual plan were assessed. The end result of a day meeting pinpointed that the program is meeting the planned targets.

8.2. PROJECT VISIT

USG Visit A mission lead by Mrs. Henrietta Fore, Director of US Foreign Assistance and Administrator of USAID visited one of the vegetable gardens implemented by DAI in Addis Ababa in November 2007. During the visit she talked to the beneficiary gardeners. The visit witnessed that the USAID/PEPFAR fund supports are really impacting the lives of the HIV affected women and children as it enabled them to produce their own food and support themselves from the income generated from the sale of the garden surplus..

DAI and ECIAfrica staff visit A senior manager,, Mr. Bill Grant from DAI visited the project in December 2007 and in February 2008. During his visit Mr Bill talked to the USAID Mission Director, project CTO, other USAID health team and make a brief project achievement presentation with the chief of party to the USAID health tem. He worked with the project team to make sure the project close down will be as per the plan. . Mrs. Jubilee Zharare, marketing specialis, from ECI Africa made a visit and did a study on marketing options of the garden surplus.
