Maintaned in yacht standards and fully equiped for offshore cruising. With several hundred boats sailing the seas of the world, the Tayana 37 has been one of the most successful products of the U.S.’s Taiwan-built boat invasion that began in the early 1970s. Three different engines have been used in the Tayana 37: the Yanmar 3QM30, the Perkins 4-108, and the Volvo MD17C. The latest change was to the Yanmar as standard propulsion. With its bulwarks, high double lifelines, and substantial bow and stern pulpits, the Tayana 37 gives the sailor a good sense of security on those cold, windy nights when he’s called out for sail changes. A teak platform grating atop the bowsprit coupled with the strong pulpit relieves that appendage of its widowmaker reputation. The bowsprit platform incorporates double anchor rollers, which can house CQR anchors. The Tayana 37 is distinguished most by its double-ended hull. The deep, full-keel bottom is designed for bluewater cruising, and the vessel’s 22,500-pound displacement includes 8,000 pounds of outside ballast. Construction is solid, hand-laid fiberglass. Designer Robert Perry drew up two twin-headstay rigs, and the boat was rigged either as a cutter or ketch. Both versions carry large sail plans — the cutter more than 800 square feet, the ketch more than 750. They’re based on a high aspect mainsail for upwind work and twin headsails for versatility. The deck profile shows a traditional trunk cabin ahead of a roomy aft cockpit with pedestal steering and controls, surrounded by a high coaming. Bow and stern pulpits are joined by double lifelines with both port and starboard gates. There’s also a pilothouse deck plan with a protected steering station. The interior of the Tayana 37 probably sells more boats than any other feature of the boat. Every boat was custom built so there has never been a standard interior. Like other Taiwanese boats, the interior of the Tayana 37 is all teak. The Tayana 37 would make an excellent retirement cruiser for the experienced sailing couple. Installing a Track-Mounted Whisker Pole By Carolyn Shearlock Cruisers often bemoan the fact that they just don’t sail as much as they would like. The wind, it seems, it always on the nose or dead astern. A little over a year ago, my husband Dave and I installed a whisker pole on our Tayana 37 ¿Qué Tal? and more than doubled the amount of sailing we’ve done, as it has made it feasible to sail with the wind astern. Further, it better balances our sail plan, often allowing us to use our Monitor wind vane while going downwind. The trick in putting a whisker pole on your boat is to make it easy to use. A line-control pole mounted on a mast track is simple to deploy and stow for almost anyone, as the pole can’t get away from you and the pole’s weight is supported by the rigging. Although push-button or twist-lock poles or ones stowed on deck are cheaper, it’s a false economy if the pole isn’t used because of the difficulty in setting it.
