CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMS MATERIALS LIST

Course: PT 610E2 Single Object Still Life Instructor: Allison Syvertsen Days/Dates: Session 1: 5 weeks, Wednesdays, May 29 – June 26 Session 2: 5 weeks, Wednesdays, July 10 – August 7 Time: 6 – 9 p.m. Location: Room 610, 6th Floor / Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building 128 N. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19102 (Use Student Entrance on Lenfest Plaza / Cherry Street)

Session 1 will progress from drawing to (with the option to draw-only); Session 2 will focus on watercolor or gouache painting. The instructor will supply subject matter for the first day of class (Sessions 1 & 2).

For all drawing and painting (Sessions 1 & 2) – Assorted graphite pencils, H – 6B (painting-only students will need just H or HB) Erasers (kneadable and white plastic) X-acto knife or pencil sharpener Small board for support (wood, masonite or ½”-thick foamcore) Artist's or masking tape Portfolio or other means of transporting flat work A small self-supporting desk or reading light for lighting your subject (preferably self-supporting, not clip-on)* A variety of objects of personal or visual interest as subject matter; will be discussed

Drawing supplies (Session 1) – White pastel/conté pencil Black (or any dark neutral-toned) pastel/ conté pencil or soft/extra-soft charcoal pencil Art Gum Eraser Sanding block (or piece of fine-grit sandpaper) At least one sheet white or light neutral-colored drawing paper (recommended: Stonehenge, Canson Mi-Teintes, German Ingres, or sheet from good quality drawing/charcoal pad), approx. 9" x 12" (18” x 24” or other large sizes can be cut down to size) Few sheets of newsprint or other inexpensive paper, if you have it (to pad your drawing board) Small/medium sketchbook (recommended) Silverpoint pencil -- either Cretacolor Silverpoint Pencil (available from Blick and other art materials stores) or stylus-type with silver wire insert One tube of Zinc / Permanent White Gouache (if purchasing for painting supplies, below); or will be supplied in class

Watercolor Supplies (Session 1 – optional; Session 2) – Watercolors in tubes - Brands such as L’Aquarelle , Daniel Smith., M. Graham, or Winsor & Newton. Avoid colors marked as “hues.” - Lemon Yellow - Yellow Ocher - Cadmium Yellow - Burnt Umber - Cadmium Red - Raw Umber - Quinacridone Red - Chinese/Zinc White - Ultramarine Blue - Titanium White watercolor (or Zinc / Permanent - Cerulean Blue White gouache) - Prussian/Phthalo Blue Watercolor paper – 140-lb. cold press, Arches brand recommended. Pads or blocks are available in various sizes (at least 8” x 10” recommended), or large individual sheets can be torn down to size as needed. Watercolor Brushes – Assorted, such as one small (#3 or 4) Round, one or two medium/large (#8 – 12 or larger) Rounds, and a 1” flat. (Make sure that they are labeled as watercolor brushes; synthetic hair is fine.) A palette with wells and room for mixing Paper towels 2 cups for water

Gouache Supplies – (Optional, as an alternative or addition to watercolors; wait to purchase / will be discussed) Gouache – Individual tubes or 10 - 12 tube set. Good brands include Holbein Artists' Gouache (not “Acryla”), Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache, and Schmincke. Recommended colors (prices vary based on pigment; less expensive substitutions indicated in parentheses), 14 – 15 ml tubes: - Zinc or Permanent White - Prussian Blue - Ivory Black - Primary Blue/Primary Cyan - Cadmium Yellow (or Permanent - Dark Green Yellow/Primary Yellow) - Permanent Green or Emerald Green - Cadmium Red (or Flame Red) - Yellow Ochre - Carmine or Winsor & Newton - Burnt Sienna Primary Red - Sepia - Ultramarine Blue Deep Watercolor Brushes – Few assorted; supplement the watercolor brush recommendations above with a few flats or see recommendations below. (Again, make sure that they are labeled as watercolor brushes; synthetic hair is fine.) Brushes – Few watercolor brushes, as recommended below. - Flats, sizes 2 (1/4-in.) and 6 (1/2-in.) - Rounds, sizes 4, 8 - Small round detail brush, size 2/0 or similar - Flat wash brush, approx. 1-in. Watercolor paper – 140-lb. cold press, Arches brand recommended. Pads or blocks are available in various sizes (at least 8” x 10” recommended), or large individual sheets can be torn down to size as needed. Hot-press (smooth surface) paper is often preferred for gouache, but cold-press (textured) paper is fine, especially if you already have it for . Additional/optional surfaces and preparations will be discussed. Paper or plastic palette (without wells), at least 12" x 16" unless a smaller size is needed for travel purposes. (A Masterson Sta-Wet Palette, is a great alternative, but note that the paper needs to be pre-soaked in hot water, according to directions, before first use.) Palette knife – small, trowel-head style 2 cups for water Paper towels
