Six new species from the United States: California (E. microps); Utah and Northern Arizona (E. wynnei), Central Arizona (E. wheeleri), Southern New Mexico (E. guadalupensis), and Mexico (E. thomasi and E. grutus) are described. The biogeography of the subgenus is discussed. Diagnoses and a key are provided to known species of Caverneleodes. Relationships with other Eleodes are discussed. Insecticide Susceptibility of the Adult Darkling Beetle, Alphitobius
INSECTICIDE SUSCEPTIBILITY OF THE ADULT DARKLING BEETLE, ALPHITOBIUS DIAPERINUS (COLEOPTERA: TENEBRIONIDAE): TOPICAL TREATMENT WITH BIFENTHRIN, IMIDACLOPRID, AND SPINOSAD by WHITNEY ELIZABETH BOOZER (Under the Direction of Nancy C. Hinkle) ABSTRACT Alphitobius diaperinus is a worldwide pest of poultry. Loss of insecticide susceptibility has been observed in darkling beetle populations worldwide. Topical bioassays were performed using technical grade spinosad (90% active ingredient by weight), bifenthrin (94.88% active ingredient by weight), and imidacloprid (95% active ingredient by weight) to determine susceptibility status of beetle populations in Georgia. LD50s were determined and compared to the LD50 of a susceptible laboratory colony to ascertain resistance ratios. A discriminating dose based on the LD99.9 of the susceptible population (Denmark) was also estimated. Varying levels of resistance to bifenthrin and imidacloprid were observed, with highest resistance occurring to imidacloprid (>3000-fold). Populations treated with spinosad showed only slight tolerance. Data indicate that resistance to bifenthrin is occurring in populations with prior pyrethroid exposure, and that efficacy of imidacloprid may be severely limited due to significant resistance occurring in beetle populations. FAMILY TENEBRIONIDAE (Darkling beetles) Y. Bousquet & J.M. Campbell This family comprises over 1200 species in North America but more than 80% of them are restricted to the southwestern United States. Only 139 species occur within the Canadian and Alaskan borders. Many tenebrionids live in semiarid areas and deserts but in Canada, most species are found in rotten wood, fungi, under logs and stones, and under the bark of dead trees. A number of species, such as Tenebrio, Gnatocerus, Tribolium and Palorus, are stored-product pests and some account for the most important ones in the country. Adults and larvae feed on plants or plant material including decaying vegetation, seeds, roots, cereals and their products, and fungi. The concept of the family used for the checklist is similar to that of the tenebrionoid branch of Doyen and Tschinkel (1982). Adults of all species have paired defensive glands with reservoirs opening between the 7th and 8th sternites. The lagrioid lineage, which is probably the sister group of the tenebrionids, have been given family status; these species lack the defensive glands. While the limits of the family is now fairly stable, its higher classification is still poorly understood. Numerous changes have recently been proposed in the classification of the family (see Doyen and Tschinkel 1982) and more are expected; the alleculids for example are probably polyphyletic in origin. The classification used here has been provided by Aalbu (pers. comm.). There is no recent revision of the Nearctic Tenebrionidae and most genera occurring in Canada have not been revised. Identification is often difficult especially in large groups like Eleodes. -

Sieber September 2020 Copyright © Miranda Galey 2020 Abstract Bat fecal samples are a rich source of ecological data for bat biologists, entomologists, and microbiologists. Feces collected from individual bats can be used to profile the gut microbiome using microbial DNA and to understand bat foraging strategies using arthropod DNA. We used eDNA collected from bat fecal samples to better understand bats as predators in the context of their unique gut physiology. We used high through- put sequencing of the COI gene and 16S rRNA gene to determine the diet composition and gut microbiome composition of three bat species in Minnesota: Eptesicus fuscus, Myotis lucifugus and M. septentrionalis. In our analysis of insect prey, we found that E. fuscus consistently foraged for a higher diversity of beetle species compared to other insects. We found that the proportional frequency of tympanate samples from M. septentrionalis and M. lucifugus was similar, while M. septentrionalis consistently preyed more often upon non-flying species. We used the same set of COI sequences to determine presence of pest species, rare species, and insects not previously observed in Minnesota. We were able to combine precise arthropod identification and the for- aging areas of individually sampled bats to observe possible range expansion of some insects. The taxonomic composition of the bat gut microbiome in all three species was found to be consistent with the composition of a mammalian small intestine. -

Abstract Species richness (SR) is a tool that managers can use to include diversity in planning and decision-making and is a convenient and useful way to characterize the first level of biological diversity. A richness list derived from existing inventories enhances a manager’s understanding of the complexity of the plant and animal communities they manage. Without a list of species, resource management decisions may have negative or unknown effects on all species occupying a forest type. Without abundance data, a common quantitative index for species diversity cannot be determined. However, SR data can include life his- tory information from published literature to enhance the SR value. This report provides an example of how inventory information can characterize the complexity of biological diversity in the ponderosa pine forest type in Arizona. The SR process broadly categorizes the number of plant and animal life forms to arrive at a composite species richness value. Common sense dictates that plants and animals exist in a biotic community because that community has sufficient resources to sustain life. -
