Thursday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m. Claire of the Sea Light by Edwidge Danticat

In interlocking stories moving back and forth in time, Danticat weaves a beautifully rendered portrait of longing in the small fishing town of Ville Rose in Haiti. Claire is turning seven; her mother died giving birth to her. Each year, her father, Nozias, feels the wrenching need to earn more money than their town can provide and to find someone to care for Claire. As the stories of those in the community unfold, their lives flow beautifully one into another in luminous prose and their motivations are never simple. The book paints a portrait of this small Haitian town, in which the equally impossible choices of life and death play out every day.

Thursday, October 11 at 7:00 p.m. Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann

New Yorker staff writer David Grann has written a gripping true-crime story, which revisits a baffling, frightening, and relatively unknown spree of murders occurring mostly in Oklahoma during the 1920s. From 1921 to 1926, at least two dozen people were murdered by a killer or killers who targeted members of the Osage Indian Nation. At that time the Osage were considered “the wealthiest people per capita in the world” thanks to the discovery of oil beneath their lands. The outcry over the killings led to the involvement in 1925 of a new and obscure branch of the Justice Department, J. Edgar Hoover’s Bureau of Investigation. Grann shows how the Osage Murders inquiry and its pursuit of justice helped Hoover make the case for a “national, more professional, scientifically skilled” police force.

Set in modern-day India, this evocative novel follows upper-middle-class Parsi housewife Sera and 65-year-old illiterate household worker Bhima as they make their way through life. Although money and class issues divide them in important ways, the two women become close; for as women, they suffer equally the abuse of men, the loss of love, and the joys and sorrows of motherhood.
