VIBRANT FOAL TRADE As part of a stock reduction, the Blue Diamond Stud partners have offered an array of horses of varying ages through different consigners this autumn, and a number of yearlings have been bought back by the duo to race. Lot 1064, a Fastnet Rock (Aus) half-sister to the G2 Gimcrack S. winner Ajaya (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), was another to be signed over to Blue Diamond Stud later in the session at 400,000gns. The average also shot up by 22% to 122,887gns, while the median was up 8% at 70,000gns. Cont. p2

Tom Goff was another frustrated bidder and Hugo Lascelles threw in one last hopeful wave of his catalogue at 1.6-million gns, but Nerses, on the phone to Al Sagar, had the final say from the gangway. TATTERSALLS DECEMBER FOAL SALE - DAY THREE

Lot Sex Sire Dam Price (gns) 835 c Camacho (GB) President’s Seal (GB) 70,000 Consigned by Genesis Green Stud Purchased by Yeomanstown Stud The Swinburns of Genesis Green Stud bred the dam of this foal, President’s Seal (GB) (Aqlaam {GB}), and--despite not setting the world alight in a couple of runs in France in 2016--the mare has rewarded her breeders’ faith in her with a fine sale from her first foal. The colt, bred off a covering fee of €7,500 and going back to the farm where he was conceived, yielded almost 10 times that in the ring and the mare is currently in foal to Camacho’s stallion-mate at Morristown Lattin, El Kabeir.

886 c Showcasing (GB) Suelita (GB) 150,000 Consigned by Whitsbury Manor Stud Purchased by West Park Farm Whitsbury Manor Stud paid 21,500gns for the four-time Italian winner Suelita (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) at Tattersalls five years ago. She has been a fine addition to the Harpers’ broodmare band ever since. While her first produce yielded only €7,000 as a yearling, that Cityscape (GB) colt went on to be the stakes- winning sprinter The Broghie Man (GB) and that has paved the way for some magic results for the mare in the sales ring. Her next offspring, a colt by Mukhadram (GB), sold for 52,000gns as a yearling last year while her 2018 yearling, a filly by Pivotal (GB), fetched 425,000gns in Tattersalls Book 2. Her latest six- figure offering is by Whitsbury Manor’s Showcasing (GB) and the mare was covered by the same stallion again this year.

943 c Showcasing (GB) Blue Aegean (GB) 100,000 Consigned by Tweenhills Farm & Stud Purchased by Abbeylands Farm Blue Aegean (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) was very well bought by Corsend Farm at the Tattersalls July Sale in 2016 for 55,000gns. A three-time winner, she was in foal to Pivotal (GB) at the time and had achieved a peak rating of 102 for Charlie Appleby, having been bought for Godolphin by Dick O’Gorman at the Craven Breeze Sale for 210,000gns in 2014. The Pivotal foal she was carrying made €90,000 as a yearling at Arqana last month and the sale of the above colt, bred off a fee of £35,000, leaves this breeding venture well ahead.

COPPER TOWN’S SHINING STEPHEN FOSTER, BELDAME AMONG SIX RACES TO LOSE GRADE I STATUS MOMENT IN CIGAR MILE? Six stakes races have been downgraded from Grade I to Grade II status for 2019, while another three will go in the opposite direction after the Owners and Breeders Association’s American Graded Stakes Committee’s review of races for next season. A total of 450 races will be graded in 2019 (five fewer than 2018), and 187 will carry listed status. Seven graded races were upgraded and nine new Grade III races and one Grade II race were named. A total of 23 races have been upgraded to Listed status. Ten graded or listed races from 2018 are no longer eligible for grading. The six races to be downgraded from Grade I to Grade II for next year are: Belmont’s Beldame S.; Churchill Downs’s Stephen Foster H.; the Los Alamitos Cash Call Futurity; and the Santa Margarita S., Triple Bend S. and Zenyatta S. at Santa Anita. The Jaipur S. and Woody Stephens S.--both on the GI Belmont S. undercard--and the Churchill Downs S. held on GI Kentucky Derby day will be Grade I events in 2019. TDN: What does it mean to you to be chosen to compete in the Longines International Jockeys’ Championship?

Javier Castellano: I have been very lucky throughout my career and I am very fortunate to have to compete against some of the best jockeys in the world. I am very excited about and thankful for the opportunity. There are so many outstanding jockeys in the United States, and it is a great honor for me to be selected. Any one of my fellow jockeys could be in my position and I am very appreciative to be going to Hong Kong.

JC: I always have a goal and I am a very competitive person, so I have a lot more to accomplish. I feel well right now, I am 41 years old and I would like to continue to ride for nine or 10 more years. Hopefully I can remain in good health and if that’s the case, I hope I can reach 6,000 wins and maybe even 7,000 wins. I would like to win the Derby, that’s a dream of mine. It’s a race that I’ve never won and one day I’d like to reach that goal. I want to be consistent and remain competitive. I have always had a lot of respect for John Velazquez. He’s one of the greatest of all time. He is enjoying himself right now, closing in on his 6,000th, he’s won two Kentucky Derbies. A total of 201 races were staged that attracted 1,789 runners, an average of a strong 8.9 horses per race. Nearly nine of every 10 races included seven or more starters. Track officials attributed the increase to the early returns from historical racing machines now in use at Derby City Gaming, CDI’s $65-million state-of-the-art facility that was opened just this past September. Average purse money has grown by a whopping 76.5% over a five-year period. By comparison, total daily purse money during the 2013 fall meet was $32,373 and daily purses averaged $328,911. The positive results were achieved under less-than-optimal weather conditions. The average daily temperature for the month of November was 43 degrees, and as a result, just 46% (23 of 50) of races carded for the grass remained on the surface.
