Male magpies only swoop during mating season in spring due to increased testosterone levels where they become over-protective dads and according to Griffi th University behavioural ecologist Dr Darryl Jones, most magpies are sedate and only about 10 per cent of magpies attack. Dr Jones said magpies are able to recognise people by facial features, remember people who regularly pass through their territory and distinguish between those different people.
