President’s Report

2016 was a season with many memorable highlights, particularly the Women’s team successes, the Jaycar Parramatta Cricket Academy success and the 5 th Grade’s strong season capped with a quarterfinal appearance. These were tempered with disappointment that the senior men’s teams were unable to turn strong training efforts and some good on field performances into the consistent success needed to achieve our potential.

The Club welcomed back Women’s Cricket under the full Parramatta DCC banner, the players having taken the decision to return from the Joint Venture Parramatta/Blacktown structure of the previous few years. Thanks to new President Scott Reibelt and hardworking Secretary Craig Noble, the Club fielded 2 full women’s sides. The girls enjoyed playing in the Two Blues colours at the superb Merrylands Oval. We made it to our first ever Final, in Second Grade, where we ran into a red hot St George outfit. Regardless, finishing runners up was a great achievement. We look forward to increasing our female playing strength in future years and ultimately securing First Grade Standing.

Skipper Mel Halton speaks to the crowd after the Women’s Final, with members of the team on the Merrylands Oval bike track

Mark McLeod’s 5 th Grade men performed well and benefited from an excellent arrangement with Epping Shires Club. Congratulations to the boys on a good year, and thanks to Epping for working with Parramatta and helping to create an environment for success for both clubs. Special thanks to Mark “Bluey” McLeod who reveled in the leadership of this side, and went from strength to strength. He is a great asset to our club.

Our Junior Program, raised to a new high level as the rebranded Jaycar Parramatta Cricket Academy, achieved unprecedented success. Winning 3 titles, the Weblin Shield U15s, the Moore Shield U14s, and the Cawsey Shield U12s was an amazing effort by these PDCA Rep teams. Playing against men in the open age PDCA B4 and B10 competitions was a superb development opportunity for the Academy boys. Winning both those Men’s competitions was an exceptional bonus.

Lead by coaches Paul Calvert, a successful ex Parramatta First Grader with Matt Roughan, an experienced junior AFL and cricket coach, the program successfully developed young cricketers to prepare them for club and representative cricket. Our gratitude to the PDCA for the close working relationship which has been a critical factor to the successes of both the PDCA and PDCA Junior Rep.s.

Many of these boys will become good Premier Grade Cricketers in the future, and we are convinced some can go on to join as Senior Representative Players from our District.

Sean Abbott in Sixers gear enjoys some time with Paul Calvert and the Jaycar Parramatta Cricket Academy

This Winter, Owen Simonsen and Tim Ward were selected in the NSW Under 19 Academy, and Jacob Workman and Hamish Starr (identified by Parra’s Grenfell talent scout Ray Smith ) were selected in the NSW Under 17 Academy .

Our other Men’s Grades did not achieve the results we aimed for. Training attendances, commitment and effort were excellent. Congratulations to Coach Jason Coleman who, in his first year as Head Coach, produced the kind of training environment we need.

However, playing performances and fielding standards were inconsistent. Fielding was particularly crucial in First Grade where the competition is currently using a Kookaburra Turf Ball, which few pace bowlers in Sydney can swing or seam. Dropped catches are therefore more costly than ever. Our district has a wonderful talent pool and our potential is much higher than a Club Championship 14th place. That being said, the First Grade’s 13 th place belies the closeness of the competition whereby the team was still in contention for a Finals position into the last round. The side provided some spectacular moments such as the opening partnership of 291 between Brenton Cherry (180) and Will Affleck (113*) which threatened the all-time record opening partnership of 219 between and Bruce Neill back in the 1970s.

Seconds 11 th place on the ladder , and 3rds 15th were below par, while 4ths were right in the race till the very end.

Such is the closeness of these competitions at present that the margin between making finals or not is wafer thin. Our club needs to find the improvement in quality of performance, and the toughness and commitment needed in a close contest, to make the difference between success and disappointment.

9

Congratulations to Evan Pitt and Trent Crittenden who were named worthy Joint Winners of our second Cumberland Medal , the Players’ Player Award. Their outstanding performances are recorded in this report.

Josh Marquez snares a brilliant catch in the 5 th Grade Quarterfinal.

Outside of our regular playing performances, Life Member Greg Davidson continued his rise in the umpiring ranks with a strong year on the National Umpiring Panel. Now a full time umpire, Davo umpired Sheffield Shield, Domestic One Day (Matador) Cup, and umpired in the Big Bash now in its 5th season. Bravo Davo!

Baulkham Hills and Parramatta Junior Rod Tucker continued his outstanding efforts as a world class umpire. This year Rod was selected to umpire the inaugural World T20 Cup Final won by the West Indies. Congratulations Budgie!

A big vote of thanks to Holroyd City Council for its commitment to its staff in supporting Davo in his quest. We look forward to the next chapter for Greg, hopefully International opportunities will be on the near horizon.

At time of writing, the Holroyd Council is no more. The NSW Government’s re-organisation of Local Councils has resulted in Holroyd and Auburn Councils being merged – to form a new “Cumberland Council”. On behalf of all cricketers and residents from Holroyd, we thank outgoing General Manager Merv Ismay and the outgoing Councilors, in particular Councilors Greg Cummings and John Perry for their tireless efforts

The great news that Merrylands Oval has, for the first time, won the Sydney Cricket Association “Lower Grade Ground of the Year” is a great “going away present” to the Council and a fantastic achievement by the key staff involved, especially Brad Horn and Wayne Hall who we trust will continue in their roles for the foreseeable future!

Parramatta City Council was also re-defined with new boundaries taking in parts of Homebush, Epping and the Hills. We similarly extend our thanks to the Councilors who have supported us so well over the years, especially Paul Garrard, whose Woodville Ward has now been aligned with Cumberland Council, Clr Bob Dwyer, Clr Lorraine Wearne, Clr Scott Lloyd and Clr Glenn Elmore. We trust that General Manager and all his staff will continue in their roles and enable our shared vision of a much needed upgrade to Old Kings Oval, and of a new Parramatta Sporting Precinct incorporating an indoor cricket and community centre adjoining the new which will replace the 30 year old . And of course, celebrating the life of , at Richie Benaud Oval where a turf pitch was receiving serious consideration, along with a number of Council Resolutions commemorating Richie.

We thank President Ray Horder and Executive Officer Eric Myatt OAM for their outstanding leadership of their Dream Team of Committee Members and Club Officials running the powerful PDCA Junior Competitions and

10 representative teams. The greater Parramatta district goes from strength to strength, as evidenced by the amazing success of the PDCA Rep teams this year.

Our Richie Benaud Tribute Luncheon was held this season at Parramatta Leagues Club. A “marvelous” representation of past and present players, officials and supporters paid tribute to Richie’s contribution to our club and to our game. We intend to maintain this tradition.

The Doug Walters Golf Classic was again held at Cumberland Country Golf Club at Greystanes. The Classic again attracted a large field, maintaining its popularity and continuing as an important fund raiser.

Adam Coy grabs a in the 5 th grade quarterfinal.

An Online Player Survey was conducted for the first time this year. It was a successful method of seeking quality feedback from players to ensure that we are listening to players’ views and creating the environment for success. We intend to continue this process.

A new Strategic Plan is under development. There have been so many changes in recent years that an updated approach and clear vision for the future is needed. It is anticipated that the new plan will be finalised in time for the upcoming season. Some aspects of the plan are already under way with the desire to move 5 th Grade games to the Hills area, specifically Charles McLaughlin Reserve at Baulkham Hills. A new Strategic Alliance with our Shires counterparts the North West Sydney Hurricanes is intended to facilitate further development of the cricket pathway in our area. We will coordinate efforts in our Academy, and aim to provide the opportunity to play night T20 and potentially a Day/Night 50 Over match or two, thereby bringing Premier to the heart of the Hills, and providing our players with a new and enjoyable cricket experience.

We thank Auburn Cricket Club for their tremendous support of our club over the past decade where we have shared their 3 rd ground for 5th grade, first at , then at the new Mona Park 3, in the years since Coleman Oval in Parramatta Park fell into disrepair. Auburn has been an exceptional partner, and we express our great appreciation to Michael Wood and the Auburn Committee.

The Lou Benaud Cup was conducted at Bradman Oval again in October, a match in which Parramatta was successful against Penrith. The match is a fantastic experience for these emerging cricketers and their supporters and we thank John Benaud for his continued support of the great addition to our calendar, as well as his support of our Player of The Round program. We are indebted to John and the Benaud Family for their great support of our Club. A photo collage of this year’s event appears elsewhere in this report.

Also in this report is a Tribute to the enigmatic Robert Aitken who passed away in May. I count myself lucky to have been one of the many CUMBOs who had the opportunity to play alongside Bob. He truly was a memorable player and character. Our club’s highest ever wicket taker, Bob was an outstanding bowler and all round cricketer. Bob was a

11 member of the 1964-65 First Grade Premiership side, along with his brother John. Both Bob and John Aitken were named in the 1960s Team of the Decade. Bob’s deep tan, piercing blue eyes, and devilish grin added to the legend. At the bowling crease, every delivery was both hand grenade, and a work of art as he completed each delivery with arm outstretched, admiring the flight and turn, bowling arm pointing statue like towards the batsman as if to say “what about that !” He delighted in testing out big names, and emerging younger players with big reputations.

He was an imposing presence in the field, with safe hands, a powerful throw and a combative approach.

When batting, no bowler was treated with respect, Bob would keenly take them on. I recall Bob volunteering to open the batting against Mosman’s Test paceman David Colley and promptly sweeping him twice, high over square leg for six. A man who divided opinions, he could be abrasive, always competitive in the extreme, not so tolerant of those on either side who fell short of his expectations, but a font of knowledge about cricket for anyone prepared to listen.

Bob was not everyone’s cup of tea, but he earned universal respect as a quality cricketer to his core, one who, on talent, could easily have progressed to higher levels, and a CUMBO who will certainly never be forgotten.

We thank our superb sponsors, partners and supporters who enable the Club to continue to grow. In particular, we thank the Parramatta Leagues Club , our Major Sponsor for over 30 years, Parramatta Park Trust who provide us with Old Kings Oval, Holroyd City Council who support us with the award winning Merrylands Oval, the Parramatta City Council, Parramatta District Cricket Association, Cricket NSW and the Sydney Cricket Association, Jaycar Electronics , a fine Australian Company based at Rydalmere, and the Rose & Crown Hotel , Parramatta’s oldest hotel still in the same location. This was the last year of the Rose and Crown Sponsorship. Due to a change of ownership we will have new Hotel Sponsorship next year, the Royal Oak. We especially thank the Rose and Crown for their support over the last few years.

In closing, may I congratulate Michael Andrew Wood on his well-deserved Life Membership and thank the members of the Club for supporting my own Life Membership nomination. Both were conferred at a Special General Meeting conducted at the recent Presentation Night. It is a great honour and humbly appreciated.

Treasurer’s Report [T. Wood] Season 2015/16

At the close of the 2015/16 Financial Year the Parramatta District Cricket Club remains in a strong financial position, and during the course of the just completed year the Club comfortably met all its running expenses and fiscal obligations – doing so within the bounds of its annual budget – and as a consequence is solidly positioned to address the pecuniary commitments pertaining to operating the Club in the ensuing 2016/17 Season.

The Club’s Healthy Financial Position, in no small way, owes a great deal of gratitude to its loyal band of Sponsors – their continued generosity provides an ongoing benefit to the Local Community by assisting the Parramatta Cricket Club to play in NSW’s Premier Cricket Competition and maintain its burgeoning Junior Development Program. Major Sponsor Parramatta Leagues Club has now been on-board for an amazing 33 consecutive seasons, this shows their sustained commitment to the District’s Sporting Community; for several years Jaycar Electronics have firmly thrown their support behind the Club’s Junior Development activities; the Rose and Crown Hotel have been great allies in recent years [unfortunately they are unable to continue as sponsor in 2016/17] and Solaft were valued backers in 2015/16 as well. The good news for 2016/17 is that The Royal Oak Hotel has agreed to come on-board as Sponsors.

Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW through their welcomed Grants continue to underpin the financial well- being of all Grade Cricket Clubs.

And not to be outdone PDCC’s “In House” fund-raisers – the popular Annual Sporting Lunch [held at Parramatta Leagues Club] and the Doug Walters Golf Classic [held at Cumberland Golf Club] – were again successful ventures, achieving the dual purpose of fund-raising and the provision of splendid social events for club members and supporters.

The PDCC cashbook balance as at 30 th June, 2016 stood at $114,143 [2014/15 - $88,863] – this is a little inflated because the costs of Ground Hire [Merrylands Oval], Presentation Dinner catering and the 2015/16 Parramatta Cricket Academy remain to be paid at balance date.

The 2016/17 season is drawing closer and it offers both the players and officials of Parramatta District Cricket Club the challenge of improving further the Club’s standing the Sydney Grade Cricket.

“From the Past”

Parramatta (Central Cumberland) District Cricket Club {By Tom Wood – Club Historian }

A little item of interest to cricket enthusiasts, from within the Parramatta Club, that I recently came across was that the club’s old champion Off-spinner Bill Howell bowled the legendary Englishman Dr W.G. Grace with a “break-back” for one run in the good Doctor’s last Test innings on 3 rd June 1899 at Nottingham.

Parramatta opening batsmen Brenton Cherry and Will Affleck have developed into a fine combination over the past two seasons, and in 2015/16 became the only batsmen in the club’s history to compile two separate double century partnerships in a single season in First grade – 291 v. North Sydney and 218 v. Manly.

Relatively speaking the instances of double century partnerships in First grade by Parramatta batsmen has been rather rare since the inception of the competition way back in 1893/94. Listed below are the details of such partnerships:-

Score Season Opponent Wicket Players 333 1895/96 Burwood 2nd F.A. Iredale and B.W. Farquhar 319* 1972/73 Petersham 1st K.D. Walters and B. Neill 291 2015/16 North Sydney 1st B. Cherry and W. Wilf Ewens and Bert Alderson were unlucky to miss the milestone sharing a 2 nd wicket stand of 199 v. Paddington in 1955/56.

23

As a tribute to the Club’s former Off-spinning Guru Bobby “RA” Aitken it is timely to publish a list of the “Top Dozen“ spin bowling wicket-takers for the Parramatta District Cricket Club in First Grade – with the pugnacious “RA” high up atop of the mountain: Bowler’s Name Type of Spinner Bobby Aitken 734 Off-spin Les Pye 484 Leg-spin Richie Benaud 362 Leg-spin Lou Benaud 360 Leg-spin Greg Davidson 333 Off-spin Michael Wood 329 Chinaman W.H. Howell 223 Off-spin Ross Shepherd 219 Off-spin Harold Cranney 216 Leg-spin & Off-spin Tom Wood 118 Leg-spin Robbie Aitken (Jnr) 117 Off-spin The table includes three sets of father and sons - Aitken, Benaud and Wood.

As Club Historian whilst researching information pertaining to the Parramatta District Cricket Club’s past, to date I’ve discovered a number of instances of the Opening batsman’s “Holy Grail” , carrying your bat through the innings – the satisfying achievement of remaining unbeaten whilst ten of your colleagues have perished. The work-in-progress list of these worthy openers is as follows:- Season Opponent Score Batsman PDCC Score Grade 1898/99 North Sydney 117* B.W. Farquhar 159 First 1899/00 North Sydney 55* B.W. An extract from an article composed by Edgar Lloyd “Gar” Waddy – one of the greatest and most prolific batsmen to ever play for Central Cumberland, who was also a regular NSW State player – in The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers advocate 20 th July 1921 makes interesting reading when he “runs down memory lane” recalling some of the outstanding players who starred for the Parramatta based Club in the first two decades of First Grade Cricket:-

24

“What memories are awakened when we think of the players and their deeds who have battled for the old club – the first club, by the way, that adopted the electorate system. Genial old Bill Howell with a pair of “carpet bags” waiting in the slips: always smiling when chances were dropped off his bowling; losing the ball over the trees to the delight of the crowd. Les Pye, with his characteristic run to the wicket and “come back”, and his numerous centuries which helped us to win many a hard-fought tussle. “Noss” Iredale, well known in the outfield by his strut around and his safe pair of hands, and his great back-cut which brought him so many runs, Wally Loveridge, the good old skipper and keeper; Joe Wilson, the man who bowled W.G. Grace for a duck; Rev. E.F. Waddy, who is now at the Rugby School in the U.K.; E.L. “Gar” Waddy, who has skippered the side the last few years; “Mudgee” Cranney, who has done so well for so many years, but cannot get any recognition from the State selectors: and numerous others who done so well in “big cricket”. We want some more of the same calibre, and then the public will come along as of old. But it is a matter of time (and luck) as every club has its ups and downs; and let us hope that they will come to light anon, the sooner the better for our old club’s sake.”

The 1966/67 First Grade Final played at the between Central Cumberland and St. George was a thrilling and absorbing match, and just when it looked as though the “two- blues” were going to be celebrating back to back Premierships – piloted by a brilliant partnership amassed by the club’s two finest players ever, Richie Benaud and Doug Walters – the cricketing gods offered up a nasty twist and the dream evaporated, and the Cumbos crashed to a shattering defeat. Attached below is a media report on the match.

25

“A Tough Call” – Teenage batsman Phil Eagar - future father of former Parramatta players Ron and Bob Eagar – described in the CCDCC Annual Report (1935/36) thus: “invariably his displays were stamped with that touch of genius which distinguishes the artist from the tradesman” – can be considered as one of the unluckiest players to play for the Club in terms of leaving a lasting landmark. In a Second Grade match against Randwick at the S.C.G. No.2 in 1935/36 he blazed a spectacular innings that is forever recorded as 199 in a team total of 451 – according to sources he was deprived of a rightful double century by his team skipper when at the end of the Cumberland innings there was a discrepancy of 2 runs between the respective scorebooks, being a gentleman and with Cumbo’s massive total the skipper magnanimously agreed to deduct two runs from the total, and in the process reduce Phil Eagar’s score to 199 – indeed a tough call.

They start young at Parramatta District Cricket Club !

James Wood became a club stalwart, enjoying a long-term career - A.W. Green Shield 1994/96; Grade 1996/97 to 2014/15 – scoring 5,389 runs @ 21.56 & 52 wickets @ 25.10 – played 1 st Grade, & captained both 2 nd & 3 rd Grade.

But his desire to don the historic “Two-Blues” colours started early, as evidenced by the adjacent picture – that shows the three year old James already training for his future proudly decked out in the bumble-bee cap.

First Grade opening batsman Brenton Cherry peeled off a massive 180 against North Sydney this season, and where that ranks on the list of 150+ First Grade scores by Parramatta players is shown on the table below:-

Parramatta’s former Test spinner W.P. “Old Bill” Howell and his pace bowling son Arthur are the only father and son to capture four-in- four balls for the Club, and in Sydney Grade Cricket history.

At times it can be quite appealing to peer back through “the looking glass” into the Club’s history vault to view a sample of some of Parramatta District Cricket Club’s battles of the past, it is interesting to note the names and the deeds of days gone by:-

o Percy’s Match!!! – “The Parramatta Alfred Cricket Club opened the season’s play, on their own ground, on Saturday afternoon last, by the first eleven meeting representatives of the Arundel Cricket Club. The former team took to the wickets first, and when the last wicket had fallen the score had reached 98; 45 of these were made by Percy Maybury , who played a very fine innings. Schwartzkoff took second place with 12 to his credit. The visitors then took the crease: but, owing to the splendid bowling of Maybury , who cleaned bowled 10 wickets for the small number of 21 runs , the total only reached 43, F. Barnett and Brown being highest scores with 14 and 13 to their credit respectively. – “Sydney Morning Herald, Wednesday 19 th September 1883.”

o 1895/96 Cumberland v. Burwood –

In a high scoring contest Burwood laid down a real challenge to Cumberland registering a sizable 351 for them to chase up – Parra’s Test batsman Frank Iredale shone with his lively quicks grabbing 4/54 (incl. hat-trick ) and leg-spinner Les Pye assisted with 3/82. Cumberland faced the task at hand with resolution, and claimed the match with ease after a brilliant 2nd wicket partnership of 333 between the gifted Wally Farquhar (223 ) and the polished Iredale (140 ) anchored the team total of 3/485 . Iredale remains the only player in Sydney First Grade history to complete the double of a hat-trick & century in the same match.

o 1912/13 Cumberland v. Sydney University - The reverse scenario to the above match, University crushed Cumberland. Sent in on a wet deck Cumberland folded for 86 – Les Pye the standout with 43 not out. On dried pitch University had little trouble in replying with 230 . On day 2 Cumberland’s second dig was an absolute disaster – they collapsed so quickly to be 7/22 (Pye 13) with the match completed before three of their players arrived at the ground. During the match the Cumbos recorded 10 ducks – 5 in each visit to the crease.

27 o 1918/19 Cumberland v. Paddington – The 1918/19 season marked the Parramatta Club’s re-entry into the first grade competition after a hiatus during World War 1 and this match against the strong Paddington Club they must have felt like they were bombarded by heavy artillery. Paddington batted first and unleashed a “whirlwind” smashing an unbelievable 6/636 in an afternoon’s play (2.00 – 6.00 pm) – their No.5 batsman McCloy made a pulverising 236 runs in just 100 minutes – George Best with 2/157 (14 overs) was the bowler treated the harshest. The Cumberland batsmen battled hard on day 2 to total 318 – openers E.L. “Gar” Waddy (108) and Sid Thomas started with a 1st wicket stand of 160 . [Paddington’s score was the second highest ever Sydney First Grade innings total, only bettered by their 5/726 v. Burwood in 1895/96].

o 1925/26 Cumberland v. Sydney University – In a tough season the bright spot was a hard fought win in a high scoring match – the Two-Blues batting fired to produce a commanding 396 runs, three separate century partnerships underpinned the innings: 134 for the 4 th wicket by Len Leabeater & Alf Hall; 107 for 5 th wicket by “Banner” Edwards & Alf Hall; and 105 for the 8 th wicket by Edwards & Soccer International Charlie Leabeater (Len’s brother) – Len Leabeater made 89 (83 minutes), Alf Hall 76 (70 minutes), Edwards 66 (105 minutes) and Charlie Leabeater 62 (52 minutes). The students pushed Cumberland all the way before succumbing for 358 – Charlie Leabeater 4/65 and Ossie Stenmark 3/112 did the damage.

o 1935/36 Cumberland v. Randwick (2 nd grade) – An exciting match won by Cumberland after a fine team effort – Randwick was held to a total of 179 by tight bowling by paceman Len Leabeater 3/43 and leggie Brian Bowman 2/40 , and in their second dig Randwick were 4/135 at game end. The Cumberland innings of 237 featured enterprising batting, in particular a stand of 134 for 5 th wicket by the attacking Bob Newson (82) and determined opener Fred Lawson who succeeded in carrying his bat through the innings (84* ). In the very next match against Manly Newson was at it again adding 155 runs in only 56 minutes with J. Baker for the 5 th wicket.

o 1946/47 Cumberland v. Petersham – In another entertaining “big scoring” affair Cumberland emerged victors by a margin of a mere 8 runs. Cumberland started proceedings with an impressive 5/356 (decl.) – openers Brian Bowman (56 ) and George Clarke (59 ) laid the foundations with a stand of 101 , this set the stage for the elegant left-hander Ray Rowe to craft a bright 100 , and the rising teenage champion Richie Benaud (81 ) to put the “icing on the cake” with a 144 run 4 th wicket partnership. Undaunted by the task ahead Petersham replied strongly and looked set to win the game – at 5.15 pm they needed just 16 runs with three wickets in the bank, but the Cumberland bowlers led by Lou Benaud (5/87 ) rallied and brought home the bacon when the Petes tumbled for 348 . o 1953/54 Cumberland v. Western Suburbs – Rated the most thrilling match of the season – both teams were littered with first-class players – Cumberland had first use of the crease, but Test opening bowler Alan Davidson routed the Parramatta men for lowly 100 (Bert Alderson 22 , Norm Lockhart 18 ). Wests them stumbled to 4/8 but recovered to make 131 (Tom Cooke 3/40 ). Batting a second time Cumberland – with only 133 minutes left in the match – “went for a win” – Richie Benaud and Bert Alderson opened the innings and flayed the attack putting on 50 runs in 14 minutes , 80 then came up in 30 minutes , and then Ron James and Jim Harry carved out a further 62 runs in 28 minutes to facilitate a closure at 3/148 . Wests needed 118 runs in 65 minutes to secure outright victory, and to their credit they accepted the

28

challenge, but were skittled for 101 – to give Cumberland an unlikely outright win, leg- spinners Jack Treanor 3/34 and Richie Benaud 6/44 engineered the win.

o 1968/69 Cumberland v. Randwick – The opening match of the season, played on a flat grassless Cumberland oval pitch turned out to be a nerve tingling and see-sawing contest that resulted in a very narrow 4 run victory to the home team, on the back of an amazing bowling effort by paceman Billy Lothian. Cumberland batted first and posted a moderate 188 (Bob Aitken 49 , Rex Flindt 26 , Wally Clifton 25 & Bill Lothian 24 ). Randwick commenced their chase by losing an early wicket, but then their two State batsmen Alan Turner and Geoff Davies forged what looked like a match-winning century partnership before they were separated – in stepped Bill Lothian and in a devastating spell he scattered the Randwick batsmen claiming 7 wickets for 1 run . At that point Randwick looked down and out but Davies was still there and partnered by Randwick’s last man he guided the total 184 , Lothian then claimed the last wicket and a win for Cumberland - Lothian’s 8/57 was typical of the big-hearted performances he achieved over many years in First Grade for the Club.

o 2006/07 Parramatta v. Gordon (2 nd Grade) – The Parramatta 2 nd eleven produced one of the Club’s best and most unforgettable wins at Killara oval – after being pummelled all over the park by the rampaging Gordon batsmen on day 1 it looked like a daunting task for Parramatta – Gordon finally declaring at 3/432 , only part-time leg-spinner Andrew Prior 3/65 made any impression with the ball. Nevertheless day 2 arrived and Parra was “armed for the fight” , opener Andrew Prior gave the side a sure start with a solid 54 , laying the platform for the tall right- hander John Procajlo to play the innings of his life a rousing 132 not out to buttress Parramatta’s run-chase, and then in the latter stages of the day the free hitting Ben Monaghan blazed a swash-buckling 70 to provide the final impetus towards victory and overhauling of the desired target – Parramatta finished 8/435 .

Charles Joseph Byrnes – was President of the Parramatta District (Cumberland) Cricket Club from 1893/94 to 1907/08 [15 years], he was a long-term Mayor of Parramatta – his name is on the front of the Parramatta Town Hall, and at times a State Member of Parliament – a wonderful backer of the historic Cricket Club.

2015/16 OBITUARIES

The Committee and Members of the Parramatta District Cricket Club extend their sincere condolences to the relatives of the following ex club members:- Bruce Ritchie [By -T.J. Wood – Club Historian]

The Parramatta District Cricket Club sadly lost another “Old Cumbo” with the passing of former First Grade Batsman Bruce Ritchie.

A product of the GPS School Sydney Grammar – where he shone at both Cricket and Rugby Union – Bruce first appeared for Central Cumberland as a fill-in in the lower grades during school holidays in the 1943/44 season.

However, he first stamped himself as player of quality in 1944/45 when he captained the CCDCC A.W. Green Shield team, topping the batting award with 201 runs @ 28.71 – edging out Richie Benaud for that honour – and at the close of the series he was selected as Captain of the Combined Green Shield team against Newcastle. Interestingly Bruce paralleled Richie Benaud’s pathway through Green Shield and Poidevin-Gray Shield into First Grade.

Bruce was a stylish right-handed batsman with a copybook batting technique and was at one stage regarded as one of the most promising batsmen in Sydney and a likely first-class player. He starred in the Club’s P.G. Shield team between 1946/47 & 1949/50 and despite missing a number of games due to representative commitments he aggregated 644 runs @ 49.54 (H.S. – 122) – captaining the team in 1948/49 & 1949/50.

The classical stroke-player made his First Grade debut in 1946/47 – whilst still a schoolboy – and proved to be a most able batsman at that level, in a long-term career that extended to 1958/59 during which he compiled 2,803 runs @ 22.60 (H.S. – 83) – a credible effort in the days of uncovered wickets. He concluded his playing days with the “Bumble-Bees” with a season in Second Grade in 1960/61.

A highlight of Bruce’s career was a brilliant 120 he scored for the NSW Colts against Queensland in 1951/52.

The Ritchie’s had a family involvement with Cumberland with Bruce’s father A.C. Ritchie serving as Treasurer between 1949/50 and 1955/56. Like a number of cricketers of his era Bruce was a talented all- round sportsman and he played First Grade Rugby Union for the Parramatta Club.

Robert “Bobbie” Aitken [By Tom Wood – Club Historian]

On 20 th May 2016 yet another “Old Cumbo” was lost with the passing of Robert “Bobby”, “RA” Aitken the former Off-spinning all-rounder.

Between 1960 & 1988 “RA” was one of the most well-known players on the Sydney First Grade cricket stage – punctuating 26 seasons at Parramatta with a two season stint at the Sydney Club – during that period he proved himself to be an outstanding cricketer and also won a reputation as a cantankerous, fierce and ultra-competitive opponent, especially when he had his fingers wrapped around a cricket ball plotting the downfall of the bloke holding the bat at the other end of the pitch.

He was an authentic all-rounder endowed with a high level of skill in each department of the game – foremost being his crafty Off-spin bowling that combined variety, guile and snappy spin to harvest wickets in abundance – whilst his batting at its peak was not text book in style but it was punishing and aggressive and could quickly alter the course of a game – as befits a long-term base-baller his fielding was sharp and alert especially in “close to the wicket” positions.

At the Parramatta (Cumberland) Club Bobby ranks alongside the wonderful off-spinners who featured for “Two-Blues” over the course of the Club’s long history – Internationals W.P. Howell & Gervys Hazlitt, and NSW rep W.H. Howell – holding pride of place as the Club’s highest ever First Grade wicket-taker with a remarkable 715 wickets.

His association with the PDCC started in 1955/56 where he emerged as a bowler of great promise in the A.W. Green Shield team by snaring 21 wickets @ 6.57 . Starting his great career in earnest in 4 th Grade in 1956/57 and finally retiring in 1988/89 – making his First Grade debut in 1960/61.

During this long career his wicket-taking deeds were quite amazing – in all Grades for PDCC he amassed 943 wickets + 19 Rothmans KO wickets, plus a further 74 wickets for the Sydney Club – a total of 1,036 Grade wickets all up. In First Grade for PDCC he captured 715 wickets @ 23.07 – including 33 “Five Wicket Bags” with a Best Bowled of 7/30 v. Sydney 1973/74. On five occasions he topped 40 wickets in a season – best 49 in 1973/74.

In all Grades for PDCC “RA” smashed 7,609 runs – including 104* v. Bankstown in 3 rd Grade in 1960/61 (his only century). In First Grade for the Club his run total stood @ 5,484 @ 19.50 (H.S. – 98) with 16 half-centuries, he also struck another 422 runs in Rothman KO matches – his all- round performances made him one of only four players to have completed the “300+ wickets & 5,000+ runs in First Grade Double ” for PDCC, the others being Les Pye, Richie Benaud and Michael Wood.

Bob was a key player in the Club’s strong 1960s teams, and played alongside older brother John “JA” Aitken in the 1964/65 First Grade Premiership winning team –

• 1964/65 Premiers – 306 runs @ 61.20 and 20 wickets @ 17.60; 1965/66 Runners-up – 44 wickets @ 19.17; and 1969/70 Minor Premiers & Runners-up – 45 wickets @ 15.78.

31

Along with “JA” he was selected in the Parramatta District Cricket Club’s “Team of the 1960s” . Many observers believe Bobby Aitken was most unfortunate not to have ever been selected for NSW.

The “apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” as demonstrated by Bob’s three sons Robbie, James and Glenn, who over many seasons with the North Sydney Club have proved to be outstanding first grade cricketers in their own right.

Vale “RA”.

PUBLICITY

It is very difficult for the Sports Editors of both the Parramatta Advertiser and the Parramatta Sun to place sporting reports and stories in their “hard copy” publications weekly, due to the competition they face with the classifieds and other business items.

We are directed to seek our sporting information from “downloading” directly from the “online” publications weekly; however we convey our thanks for the support that the sporting journalists give the Club.

The Website (www.parracricket.com.au ) is an excellent source of information available with so much activity within the cricket fraternity, the Parramatta site is one of the most popular sites activated with numerous overseas enquiries.

Our thanks to Roslyn who is ensuring everything is as up to date as possible.

VOLUNTEERS

The Committee wish to convey their most grateful thanks to the many volunteers who make themselves available week after week to support the Club in numerous ways during the season.

We acknowledge the untiring efforts given by the Ladies, in particular in providing the best kiosk in Sydney Grade Cricket, we thank, Merryn Bertus, Debbie Copperfield, Lisa Bates, Mercedes Bertus, Bernie Cassel, Louise Child, the Gentlemen, Glenn Chant, Paul Copperfield, George Gerrard, John Affleck, Nathan Rees, Owen Cade, Reg Taylor, Rod Mackander, our Scorers led by International Chris Bennison, Margy Pitt and Lise Bellam.

FIRST GRADE REPORT

The Parramatta First Grade side had a relatively successful season that built on the significant progress made in the previous year. This season saw Jason Coleman appointed as Head Coach and Alex Murphy and Paul Sullivan return as part of the coaching staff. Preseason began with early morning fitness sessions being conducted by cricket fitness legend, Kevin Chevell at his gym in Penrith every Saturday and Sunday morning. This culminated in a final challenge consisting of 250 thrusters, followed by a 5000m row, another 250 thrusters and the final 5000m row. This training greatly contributed to the improvement in the strength, conditioning and mental toughness of the players who participated which was reflected in each of these individuals’ results throughout the season.

The opening of the 2015/16 season saw a change in the format with two weeks of one day matches to be played. Parramatta started round one off on a high with a win over Western Suburbs bowling them all out for 177 in just 45 overs. Sean Abbott returned home to Parramatta this season, a very welcome addition to the side with him taking the opening wicket of the season in his first over. Ben Martin, Scott Copperfield and Michael Castle shared two wickets each for the innings, with Shane Cassel and Chris White picking up one a piece. Parramatta came out firing in the batting, chasing the runs down in 43 overs and only losing two wickets. Brenton Cherry kicked off his season with 60 runs not out and Sean Abbott was loving being back in the side with 50 not out. Unfortunately, this early form was not replicated in round two with a loss to Eastern Suburbs after being set a total of 338 runs.

Round three saw the start of the two-day competition against Sydney at Old Kings Oval. Despite stunning performances from Chris White with figures of 5/88 off 22 overs and a 99 run innings from Tim Affleck, the boys were unable to chase down the 333 run total. However, the side was able to bounce back in round four with a win again North Sydney. Set a total 9/309, Parramatta threatened to chase down the runs without losing a wicket with an outstanding opening run partnership of 291 runs. Brenton Cherry smashed his maiden first grade century with 180 runs while Will Affleck scored his first century for the season with 113 runs not out.

November came around and some unlucky weather meant that round five was drawn with week one being abandoned due to rain and less than 60 overs being played in week two. Thankfully, the weather cleared up for a round six win against St George. St George declared at 7/367 overnight with wickets shared between Ben Martin (3/102 off 27 overs), Sean Abbott (2/37 off 12 overs) and Michael Castle (2/39 off 14.4 overs). With a large total to chase, Will Affleck put his head down to score 78 runs, Nick Bertus posted his first century for the season with 117 runs, followed by 68 runs from Tim Affleck. Great batting put the boys in an excellent position for the day, with the runs being chased down in 84 overs.

Round seven against Campbelltown-Camden saw the return of Parramatta’s Daniel Jackson and James Parkinson to the side, providing depth in the bowling attack due to injuries. After some great bowling performances in second grade, Anthony Child also joined the side. Parramatta set a total of 238 with Adam Turrell scoring 71 and Ben Martin posting a total of 61 runs off 66 balls. Unfortunately, the boys were unable to snag the final wicket with Campbelltown-Camden reaching their target 9 down. Wickets went to Ben Martin with 3/57 off 22 overs, Scott Copperfield 2/51 off 12 overs and Daniel Jackson, Chris White and Anthony Child all chipping in with one each. This was the last two-day match before a break for the one-day competition.

Round eight brought the third one-day match for the year again Mosman with a flat wicket once again meaning large total of 280 for the boys to chase. Unfortunately, Parramatta fell short, being bowled out for 224, despite a half century from Nick Bertus. However, the boys returned after the break, refreshed and ready to take on UNSW in another one-day match in round nine. Tim Affleck performed excellently in all facets, top scoring with 57 runs, bowling figures of 3/25 off 7 overs and taking two catches in field. Michael Castle also returned from injury posting a total of 46 runs with the bat and Daniel Jackson took 2/37 off 10 overs. This was the end of the one-day competition for Parramatta, unfortunately not making the final series in 2015/16.

56

Round ten saw the return of the two-day competition against Northern District where rain delayed the start of the match, only for play to be abandoned after a few overs due to dangerous conditions. Week two also had a delayed start due to the weather with the boys posting a total of 271 with contributions from Nick Bertus, Michael Castle, Trent Crittenden and a half century from Tim Affleck. Unfortunately, the boys were unable to come away with the win with Northern District chasing down the total in 57 overs. Bowling figures included 2/48 off 14 from Ben Martin and one wicket a piece from Daniel Jackson, Michael Castle and Trent Crittenden.

A Saturday/Sunday match at Old Kings against Sydney University for round eleven was also subject to weather with a huge storm ending play on day one and causing a delayed start on Sunday. Unfortunately, the match was drawn with Parramatta not being able to chase down the 351 run total, despite a 99 run innings from Michael Castle.

Round twelve against Blacktown kept Parramatta’s finals hopes alive with a solid win on a green wicket after rain again affected play. Brad Taylor returned from injury with a 5 wicket haul to help the side to a win with batting contributions of a half century from Michael Castle, 43 from Adam Turrell and 39 from Chris White.

This form continued into round thirteen with another win against Manly-Warringah in a Saturday/Sunday match at Graham Reserve. Manly-Warringah declared overnight at 4/330 with Parramatta threatening again to chase down the runs without losing a wicket with openers Will Affleck scoring 116 and Brenton Cherry 132. The side chased down the total in an exciting finish in the 73 rd over.

Round fourteen ended out the two-day competition against Fairfield-Liverpool with another win. Fairfield- Liverpool declared at 6/274 overnight with two wickets each to Brad Taylor and Chris White. A 138 run innings from Nick Bertus secured the win for Parramatta.

The final round of the season ended with a one-day match against Bankstown. With the competition being so close and a mathematical chance to make the finals, they boys put their all in but were outplayed Bankstown who went on to win the competition. Unfortunately, with many bonus point wins, the side slipped down to finish in 13 th for season.

T20 Competition

Parramatta started the T20 competition off with two matches at Old Kings Oval. Game one against Blacktown started with Michael Castle opening the batting with 49 runs and a side total of 138. Bowling of 3/25 from Scott Copperfield, 2/22 from Ben Martin, a wicket each from Brad Taylor and Anthony Child and two run outs meant that Blacktown were restrained to 9/132 giving Parramatta confidence going into their second game on the day against Central Coast. Batting first again, Nick Bertus scored 72 runs not out, with another 44 from Michael Castle, 30 from Ben Abbott and 18 from Luke Dempsey who joined the squad for the competition. The boys again were able to restrict their opponents to 4/124 to make 2/2 wins.

Two weeks later brought round three of T20 competition for Parramatta again Sydney University. The boys unfortunately were unable to chase down the 120 run target, being bowled out for a disappointing 90 runs. This performance also carried through a week later going down to Fairfield-Liverpool, again being bowled out for 95 runs and ending the sides T20 competition.

Player Profiles

Sean Abbott This season saw a massive boost to the club with Sean’s return. Although he only played a handful of games for the Two Blues, his contributions were significant. His presence in the dressing room and knowledge of the game was enjoyed by all, again proving why he is playing at the highest level.

57

Tim Affleck Tim had another solid season in the top grade. He has proven a more than capable middle order batsman that can be relied upon, especially in difficult circumstances, helping Parramatta to fight out of some tough situations on more than one occasion. Tim’s fielding was also excellent throughout the year. Whilst these contributions are not always measurable by statistics, his boundary riding was crucial and he took twelve catches throughout the season. Tim’s right arm off-spin was also very useful and is showing significant signs of improvement with some standout performances throughout the year.

Will Affleck Will had another great season with the bat at the top of the order. His pairing with Brenton Cherry is proving to be a formidable opening partnership, providing a solid base most games for the team. Will added another two centuries to his first grade career this season and was a part of two of the best opening partnerships in the club’s history against North Sydney and Manly-Warringah.

Nick Bertus This season saw Nick take over the reigns as the side’s full time wicket keeper. Nick was always very tidy behind the stumps with 21 dismissals and two stumpings. Nick also had a very successful season with the bat, notching up two first grade centuries and scored a total of 632 runs across all formats. Nick also provided useful tactics behind the stumps assisting to set fields and helping to make crucial decisions throughout matches.

Shane Cassel Shane struggled with form and confidence throughout the early part of the season but on occasions showed his potential and ability with some useful spells of bowling. Whilst this season was not highly successful for Shane in the top grade, he showed his resilience and capability with some excellent performances for the second grade team with both the bat and ball. Hopefully, he can take this form into next season and have greater success in the top grade in the years to come.

Brenton Cherry Brenton had another great season at the top of the batting order, further securing himself as an integral part of the first grade team. This season saw Brenton finally notch up his much elusive maiden first grade century but wasted no time up at all, notching up a second one, both of which were part of two outstanding opening partnerships with Will Affleck.

Scott Copperfield This season saw Scott have limited success due to more unfortunate injuries. He was a consistent performer in the early part of the season before succumbing to injury but was particularly impressive in his return, bowling with good pace and accuracy. Unfortunately, just as things were looking promising Scott was struck down with a stress fracture in his leg which saw him miss the remainder of the season. Hopefully, Scott is on the mend and will return to full fitness and have success that we all know he is capable of in the 2016/17 season.

Trent Crittenden An excellent start to the season for Trent saw him elevated to the top grade. Whist not batting in his preferred position, he proved himself to be a much improved first grade batsman with a bright future. His part-time medium pace bowling and fielding were also vital on a number of occasions and provided some depth to side. Hopefully Trent can continue to show this improvement next season.

Daniel Jackson The 2015/16 season saw Daniel return to the Two Blues. This proved a very important recruitment as many injuries to the attack saw Daniel promoted to the first grade side. Daniel bowled very well during the games he played this year, bowling on many occasions without luck and thus not achieving the success that he would have liked. His enthusiasm and aggression are always valued by everyone he plays with.

58

Ben Martin Ben had another consistent year in first grade, proving to be a vital part of the fast bowling attack. With a heavy workload in the early part of the season due to injuries to the other fast bowlers, Ben’s reliable and determined character helped fill the void prior to Christmas. Ben also proved himself to be a very capable lower order batsman, providing valuable runs on numerous occasions, notching up his maiden first grade half century this season. Ben is also to be congratulated for becoming a father during the season.

James Parkinson Whilst James did not play as many games in first grade as he would have liked this season, he is a true club man and deserves special mention as he is an integral part of the senior playing group at Parramatta. He is wished all the best in his move to Ireland and will be extremely missed by everyone at the Club.

Brad Taylor Brad was another whose season was injury affected, which only saw him play seven games in the top grade. He had great impact in his return from injury against Blacktown, taking his maiden first grade five wicket haul. He has proven himself to be a much improved first grade bowler and hopefully a full season will see him achieve what he is capable of.

Adam Turrell This season saw Adam make the move into the middle order of the first grade side, which proved quite successful. He had a successful year with the bat, providing good middle order resistance on occasions and attacking stroke play which was both important and entertaining. Adam’s enthusiasm at training and on the field is why he is a valued senior member of the club.

Chris White Chris had another consistent season with the ball and is continuing to develop into a reliable first grade off- spin bowler. Although Chris didn’t have a successful season with the bat, he is known as a capable lower order batsman which was evident in his innings against Blacktown where he helped secure the win in a difficult situation.

The First Grade side would of course not run smoothly without the help and assistance from other members of the Club. A special thank you needs to be given to Christine Bennison who returned this season as the hardworking scorer and to Glenn Chant for filling in while Christine was appointed to representative matches. Thank you to Ron Wright for always lending a helping hand, tirelessly running drinks every week and always locking up after games. Rod Cherry was a welcome addition to the canteen this year and all your work is very much appreciated by the boys. A special mention to Grahame Cassel who ran the First Grade warm ups and to Jason Coleman and Paul Sullivan for also helping during season. Thank you to all those who came to support the side each week, to Greg Monaghan, Tom Wood and Alex Murphy again thank you for all your support and work off the field. Finally, to Merryn Bertus, Deborah Copperfield, Lisa Bates and all those who helped along the way with afternoon tea each week, thank you for providing the best spreads in the competition and always ensuring the boys did not go hungry.

Congratulations to Bankstown for winning the First Grade Competition and finally to the Parramatta Two Blues, next year is our year!

SECOND GRADE REPORT

Final Position: 11 th

What a year, highs, lows and C1/C2s. We know our team had the ability to take the title out this year and it may seem a bit farfetched considering we came 11 th but anyone that came and saw us play knows we were in it up to our ears. Anyway the season started off well with a steady win against Western Suburbs (Ward 64, Abbott 51, Child 3/27) and a clinical win against Eastern Suburbs (Dempsey 2/16, Crittenden 51). We were flying and a little bit cocky I won’t lie but we got brought back down to earth by Sydney (Jackson 3/37, Child 4/52, Crittenden 61) who ended up being the Premiers. At the time we didn’t realize how crucial that loss was for our season.

Next week we knew we had to bounce back and bounce back we did we posted a strong 282(Crittenden 50, Abbott 54, Joseph 51) on a field that didn’t give value for runs. We then proceeded to bowl them out for merely 114 (Taylor 3/30, Liyanage 3/27). This followed a washout the next game where we bowled one of the top six sides in Sutherland out for 217 (Child 4/51) but no play took place the second week.

Next we moved on to play St George at Hurstville where to be honest is one of the proudest draws I have ever been a part of. Sounds funny saying I’m proud of a Draw but the ticker Parkinson and Liyanage showed reflects what I would like to think our club is made of. Having lost a few quick wickers late in day we had to batten down the hatches and ensure we didn’t give St George any points. The boy’s face over 120 balls between them in what was a nail biting finish. So at this stage after 6 rounds having not picked up points in the last two games it set us back into mid table.

The next few games would be a mixed bag we destroyed Campbelltown (Brown 59, Pitt 48, Taylor 2/12, Cassel 3/37) with I believe some of the best Fast bowling I have witness so far in grade cricket with Brad Taylor ripping through the top order in a spell that intimidated everyone in the ground. This then led to a shellacking at the hand of Mosman with us being bowled out for just over 100. So going into the break we were still sitting mid table with a massive chance to still make the 6 however we knew the next game was a must win against UNSW. It proved to be as we lost this game and it basically made it a long shot for us to make the 6.

The next few rounds were mixed bags we picked up a great team victory against Northern Districts (Ward 87, Abbott 40, Brown 45*), then proceeded to lose the next three against Sydney University (Abbott 81), Blacktown (Copperfield 70, Joseph 48, Parkinson 56, Copperfield 4/45) and Manly (Sullivan 4/47). By this stage we had no mathematical chance of making the six and we were sitting in a position on the table I didn’t think justified how much we competed in the competition.

This quickly changed with two quality performances disposing of Fairfield-Liverpool (Cassel 115, Ward 104, Jackson 5/ 29) which involved a 206 run Partnership between Tim Ward and Shane Cassel which showcased the ability of these two players. Digging us out of a hole at 3 for 27 and putting us into a match winning position. The game was then finished off by Daniel Jackson who finally had some luck and he took a brilliant 5 wickets.

Last game of the season we headed over to Bankstown (Liyanage 4/33, Abbott 52, Brown 45) and apart from the fact the lads were excited about the end of season shenanigans we still put in a professional performance which involved a brutal display of hitting from Ben Abbott.

As you can see our season was genuinely a mixed bag, we had games were we completely dominated and then games were we were completed dominated. Having had a lot of changes and players injured it definitely didn’t help however as a result a lot of our younger players got to gain much needed experience that will put them in good stead for the upcoming seasons.

Boys it’s been a pleasure this year apart from the fact I had one of my worst seasons I believe it was arguably my most enjoyable. You lads and the Club are the reason I came back! THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME!!

74

Lastly I would like to thank all the Coaching Staff Jason Coleman, Paul Sullivan and Alex Murphy, also Tom Wood, Ron Wright and Greg Monaghan for their efforts this year it is much appreciated.

Player Profiles

Ben Abbott-

Ben was our rock in the side all year time and time again changing a game in the blink of an eye. As most people know Ben is a rare talent that can put balls into different post codes at will but what was most satisfying this year was his growing maturity at the crease. Ben was an imperative part of the team and was always willing to do what he had to for the team. I believe if Ben keeps working hard it won’t be long until he’s cementing his spot in our first grade side!

Yusof Brown-

Yusof cemented his spot as a second grader this year and I believe while he probably didn’t have the stats like last year he proved that he is starting become a classy batsmen. Yusof also added extreme athleticism in the field which saved runs, allowed him to take catches other blokes couldn’t and caused some mayhem for opposing teams between the wickets. With more time at the crease this coming year and learning more about his own game we will start seeing even better results from Sof.

James Parkinson –

Big red did what big red does and that is come in a bowl, bowl, bowl and bowl. So far I have not seen anyone in grade cricket that can continually come in and bowl at the same pace all day without one complaint. He has a motor like no other and next year will be a massive loss. Even though Parko might not have taken the wickets we have taken for granted for over the years he still played the most important part in our attack. His ability to dry up an end allows our other bowlers to grab wickets through pressure. Parko all the best in Ireland mate you’ll be sorely missed!!!

Tim Ward-

Wardy started the season like a house on fire with a knock well beyond his years. After this innings Wardy struggled while we struggled finding him an opening partner. But if anyone knows what Wardy is like he just ‘loves it’, I have never seen someone who wants to bat as much as he does. He trains the house down and deserves everything he gets, which is the reason I believe allowed him to come out of his form slump and end the season on some serious knocks. His ton against Fairfield- Liverpool was brilliant and it just displayed all his talents. It won’t be long until we see him featuring in our first grade side.

George Joseph-

“Mr Energy”, George is like no keeper I have ever played with he has the ability to maintain his intensity throughout his whole day. George illustrated his fine glovemanship, which will only get better through more and more games. George also highlighted his ability to occupy the crease that netted him important runs in his first year of second grade. It is only a matter of time that George will turn his occupying of the crease into big runs and I’m excited to see George this year after a fully year in second grade. Keep up the hard work George!!!

Michael Sullivan-

This year has been massive for Sully I believe he has learnt the most about his game compared to anyone else. Not initially thought to be playing as much as he did Sully proved he is up to it and on several occasions was our spear head. After hitting a bloke dead in front and not being given out he just missed out on his first five wicket haul in second grade. He will only get better and it’s only up to him how far he can go. With a few extra yards of pace which I’m sure he will get he is going to be a quality first grader in years to come. 2017/2018 is a big year for you mate train hard and you will get rewards!!!!

75

Daniel Jackson-

Jacko started the season and finished the season with us. His knowledge of the game and his ability to get the best out of his teammates is second to none. His experience playing first grade all those years is invaluable to all our other quick’s coming through. Just when everything starts to think he’s done he finds a way to prove he’s still got it. If nicks had of gone Jacko’s way it’s scary to think that stats he would have had, we all know his luck will change and a 50 wicket season might still be possible!!! Jacko you are a legend of this club and I hope you go around again so we all can learn more about our games!!!

Kyle Masters- woooooooooooooo! Where do I start with the growler! He is a bloke from the country who enjoys having a laugh and playing his cricket hard. Kyle joined our team after a few rounds and quickly became one of the more popular figures in the team. While Kyle had limited success with the Bat his attitude I believe will cause him to reach his full potential in the coming years. Although the batting didn’t go to plan Kyle proved he has a knack of taking crucial wickets with his medium pacers. Kyle I hope you stick at it mate the luck will turn with the bat and you will establish yourself as a quality all-rounder in the higher grades.

Shane Cassel-

Caso joined us three quarters of the way from first grade and instantly added class and experience to the team. Having played a lot of cricket with Caso I know what the man can do and he proved with overs he can get back to his very best. Caso had the ball on a string for most of his second grade appearances and this coincided with a four wicket haul against Fairfield-Liverpool where he proved how dominant he can be. Mostly known for his bowling Caso scored a blistering 115 against the same team demonstrating his future all round abilities. I prey he stays with us next year because I believe under the right circumstances this bloke is a genuine match winner!!!!

Anthony Child-

Where do I start with this pillow??? Having played nearly every year of cricket with this bloke it’s safe to say I trust him in any situation on a cricket field. He was a massive loss for the club when he left us after Christmas to take up opportunities abroad. Childsy was arguably in the form of his life earning himself a first grade spot, I hope we see Childsy in the two blue colours again soon but only he knows that! Mate we have a four-peat to chase!!

A special mention must also go to Liam Gillies, Taj Brar, Owen Simonsen, Evan Pitt, Scott Copperfield, Brad Taylor and Daniel Beattie thanks lads for your contributions.

THIRD GRADE REPORT Final Position: 15th

Season 2015/16 saw a mixture of seasoned veterans from an exciting previous season, as well as young players making their debuts in 3 rd Grade. After a strong finish to the last season, winning the last 4 rounds, I was hoping for a continuation of that form to kick-start this season in the hope to be pushing for a top 6 position come semi-final time.

Unfortunately this did not go to plan against Western Suburbs in Round 1, where Blick Oval showed resemblances to a swimming pool as opposed to a cricket ground. Round 2, we were up against Eastern Suburbs, who finished the regular season 2 nd on the ladder. In a high-scoring game, we finished 3 runs short in a nail-biter but we displayed a very positive performance.

In Round 3 we took on the minor premiers Sydney, and went into the game with plenty of belief and were rewarded with maximum 10 points, and a quality outright win to get our season underway.

Rounds 4 to 8 took us to the Christmas break. In those 5 matches, we had a comprehensive win over North Sydney, another washout against Sutherland without a ball being bowled, a close nail-biting victory over Campbelltown-Camden where we took the final 3 wickets for 0 runs, and two close losses to St. George and Mosman by 6 and 20 runs respectively.

Round 9, the first game after a well-deserved Christmas break saw us thoroughly outplay UNSW in a limited-overs game where we gained a bonus point.

Rounds 10 to 13 was where we needed to step-up as a side in the push for semi-final cricket, but a mixture of injuries in higher grades with a knock-on effect, as well as some poor availability and inexperienced decision making, saw us comprehensively lose to both Northern Districts, rivals Blacktown and a strong Manly side. Another washout without a ball being bowled against Sydney University gave us a total of three washouts for the season.

Round 14 we were up against Fairfield-Liverpool and unfortunately we were mathematically no chance of finishing in the top 6, although they were. A comfortable two-wicket win meant that they were out of semi- final contentions.

Round 15 versus Bankstown saw us unfortunately being beat by the better side on the day, falling 56 runs short in a high scoring game at Merrylands Oval.

From my point of view, it was a very encouraging and successful season with a number of good, young players establishing themselves at this level. Although very disappointed that we did not feature in finals cricket, those narrow loses and unfortunate washouts did not help our cause. It was also great to see a number of young players promoted and get a taste of Second Grade.

I would like to thank all the players for their effort on match day, at training, as well as their support and respect they showed me as Captain on and off the field. It was a pleasure to Captain such a young, enthusiastic, hard-working group of players who all have a big future in the game.

Thanks also to the Club for giving me the opportunity to Captain the side.

Special thank you to the following people: • Our devoted scorer Michael Beattie • Our reserve scorer Margy Pitt • Brad and all the Merrylands Oval Ground Staff for providing us with Lower Grade Ground of the Year.

86

Thanks for all your effort lads; I thoroughly enjoyed your company and playing alongside a great bunch of blokes. I hope to see you all back next season and I have no doubt that with the experience gained, both positive through wins and negative through losses, and the talent shown, we will be in a good position and we MUST make the top 6 next season.

PLAYERS

Jason Coleman – 12 matches (102 runs, 30 wickets, 7 catches)

JC set a great example to the younger blokes on how to have a professional and never-give-up attitude. Captaining another inexperienced side, his support and competitiveness encouraged all the players to do their best by the team. He was our best bowler all year and deserved his 30 wickets (by Ameesh Kaul). Highlights: 27 vs Campbelltown-Camden, 5/14 vs UNSW, 4/18 Northern District

Matt Giumelli – 12 matches (199 runs, 20 wickets, 5 catches)

Matt was promoted to 3 rd Grade Round 2 and never looked back. Played in all 12 matches and proved to be a genuine all-rounder at this level. Given plenty of opportunity with the ball, Matt’s off-spin developed out of sight and went from being a golden arm to our genuine strike bowler. Matt’s batting was steady throughout the season and his 48 to finish the season was a true reflection of his natural positive stroke play. Highlights: 56 vs Eastern Suburbs, 48 vs Bankstown, 5/55 vs Northern District, 4/24 vs Blacktown, 4/25 Manly-Warringah

Taylor Charles – 12 matches (377 runs, 17 catches)

Taylor played in all 3 rd Grade matches and was given the task as Senior Pro and Vice-Captain as he was the second oldest and experienced at aged 22. Taylor dominated with the bat due to his positive mindset and displaying his wide array of shots, especially before the Christmas break. His keeping was mistake-free and was the benchmark in the field and his advice to me as captain was often very helpful. Highlights: 76 vs North Sydney, 59* vs Sydney, 43 vs St. George, 40* vs Blacktown

Owen Simonsen – 11 matches (131 runs, 19 wickets, 5 catches)

Owen’s second season in Grade cricket saw him play most of the games in 3’s and was rewarded with a taste of Second Grade. Bowled his left-arm orthodox with good control and often picked up valuable wickets at important stages of the game and deserved his 19 wickets. Owen’s fielding as always was class and showed why his batting can be so destructive with a hard-hitting 34 against Bankstown. Highlights: 34 vs Bankstown, 4/52 vs Sydney, 3/22 vs Manly-Warringah, 3/43 vs Fairfield-Liverpool

Ameesh Kaul – 11 matches (229 runs, 4 catches)

Another season in 3 rd Grade saw his batting develop even further from the previous season and continued his stylish, easy on the eye, no-fuss batting. Never seen a bloke make batting look so easy for the first 20 runs, but I would like to see the next 80 no matter how it looks. A natural in the field in any position whom genuinely loves fielding all day. Very good training ethic, who will continue to improve and go up the grades. Highlights: 69 vs St. George, 54 vs Manly-Warringah, 41 vs North Sydney

Liam Lofts – 10 matches (80 runs, 7 wickets, 5 catches)

Liam’s second full year in 3 rd Grade saw him take some very valuable wickets with his big turning off- spinners and I cannot believe his wicket tally is so low. In this case, stats do not do justice to the way Liam bowled this season. Often made left-handers look stupid. His batting continues to improve and chipped in with handy runs when needed under pressure. Showed his versatility in the field, taking two of the best catches this year, one at first slip and the other at long on. Highlights: 25 vs Manly-Warringah, 2/3 vs Sydney, 2/39 vs Manly-Warringah

87

Daniel Beattie – 10 matches (85 runs, 13 wickets, 3 catches)

Daniel enjoyed a successful second season in Grade Cricket, his first in 3 rd Grade and was rewarded with an opportunity in 2 nd Grade. Whole-hearted performer both with the bat and ball, giving 100% the whole day. Bowled some fiery spells, particularly at left-handers, and who will forget the heroics at Campbelltown. Limited opportunity for Daniel with the bat but his 39 at Campbelltown showed he is an all-round cricketer. Highlights: 39 vs Campbelltown-Camden, 4/28 vs Blacktown, 3/28 vs Campbelltown-Camden

Dylan Charles – 8 matches (281 runs, 2 catches)

Dylan was promoted to 3 rd Grade Round 6 after dominating 4 th Grade. His form continued in 3 rd Grade throughout the year, proving to be a destructive and ruthless bat to all bowling attacks at the top of the order. Faultless in the field, cannot recall Dylan making a mistake throughout the season despite catching everything like a keeper, although very successfully. Man to watch season 2016/17. Highlights: 83 vs UNSW, 61 vs Fairfield-Liverpool, 54 vs Mosman

Evan Pitt – 8 matches (410 runs, 6 catches)

After a quiet year in 2014/15, Evan bounced back in 2015/16 with a phenomenal season with the bat, proving to be the side’s best batter, leading run scorer, best average, and more importantly, played a massive part in a lot of our victories keeping a cool head under pressure. Was rewarded with four 2 nd Grade games and will obviously play plenty more in the future. Well done mate, great season! Highlights: 113 vs Eastern Suburbs, 94 vs North Sydney, 70* vs Fairfield-Liverpool

Hayden Cole – 8 matches (114 runs, 2 wickets, 5 catches)

A late decision to play, no pre-season and missing the first few rounds really affected Hayden’s bowling this season. However, I cannot and would not fault his commitment to the club and whole-hearted effort both at training and on match day. A great team man, who is without a doubt one of our best fielders and proved a handy hard-hitting top order batter later in the season. A pleasure to captain, who will be sorely missed should he decide not to play next season. Highlights: 50 vs Campbelltown-Camden (Crunch), 23 vs Fairfield-Liverpool (Crunch again)

Kyle Masters – 6 matches (86 runs, 8 wickets, 9 catches)

Kyle did not have a lot of luck this season with the bat anyway. Showed his hard-hitting abilities Round 15 versus Bankstown, smoking his first ball of our innings for six over cover, setting the tone of his innings. Bowled his handy outswingers with great control, often quicker than he looks and his bowling stats do not do him justice this season. 9 catches saw him as our leading catcher with some screamers at 2 nd slip. Highlights: 41 vs Bankstown, 3/14 vs Campbelltown-Camden

Taj Brar – 5 matches (122 runs, 2 catches)

A steady season saw Taj promoted to 2 nd Grade after some consistent performances. Has the ability to look in complete control and never out of his comfort zone during his time at the crease. Taj missed a handful of games due to overseas holiday. A full season next summer will see him continue to develop into a genuine 2nd Grade-Opening Bat. Highlights: 61 vs North Sydney

88

Liam Gillies – 3 matches (7 runs, 6 wickets, 1 catch)

Unfortunately a nasty elbow injury hindered Liam’s bowling throughout the season, forcing him to stop playing after Christmas to have it operated on. Cannot believe how well he bowled during the matches he played and the courage he showed with an injury as crippling as this would have been. Cannot wait to see a fully fit Gil back to his best in season 2016/17. Highlights: 3/36 vs Mosman, Catch in gully vs Campbelltown-Camden

Michael Sullivan – 3 matches (2 runs, 11 wickets, 1 catch)

Michael started the season in 3 rd Grade but was promoted to 2 nd Grade early in the season and never looked back. His form continued in 2 nd Grade and finished as one of the Club’s premier seam bowlers. Highlights: 4/19 and 3/32 vs Sydney

FOURTH GRADE REPORT

The 2015/16 season for the Parramatta 4th Grade side can be best described as “so near but yet so far”. We used 24 players this season and each and every one of them can lay claim to contributing to the performance of the 4 th Grade squad. In the end we finished one win out of the finals. On reflection you can look at the missed opportunities and “what ifs” but the pleasing aspect was this team competed hard week in and week out and no doubt the younger players will have benefitted from the season.

One very pleasing aspect of our season 10 players used were able to progress through 4 th Grade as a result of on field performances and earn the opportunity to play in the higher grades. This progression opened the door for young players such as Mick Bellam, Gab D’Angelo, Jackson Preedy, James Elliott, Aravinth Kushelakumaran (AK) to step up to 4 th Grade and show they had the talent to succeed.

4th Grade was a very even competition. Consistency with the bat was an issue for the boys this season. We had different players chipping in each week evidenced by 6 players scoring over 200 runs for the season but the highest being Fidah with 278 runs. Senior players Ankur, PG and Kev contributed well. Youngsters James Elliott and Mick Bellam also scored over 200 for the season and showed when they were in and applied themselves that they had the ability to dominate any 4 th Grade attack. Converting the starts into big scores and is the next phase for the boys in their development.

Matt Brooks and Kev Tyler led the way with the ball. Ankur, Jacob, Fidah, Alex and Gabs all had their moments with the ball as well. The bowlers certainly did their job and were able to create enough chances each innings. On many occasions the boys hard work with the ball was not capitalised on in the field with several important catches going down. The old adage that “catches win matches” has not changed since the game was invented and 4 th Grade again validated it in 2015/6.

Below are some words about our main contributors for season 2015/6.

Jacob Workman in his first season of grade cricket as a 15 year old was able to convert his undoubted talent and maturity into consistent all round performances highlighted by two match winning innings in his first two matches in grade cricket. His bowling continued to improve as the season went on and his wicket tally should have been so much more if only we could catch! Jacob capped of a superb season with selection in the NSW U17 Development squad.

Varun “V” Satish had another sound season behind the stumps. The next step for V is to convert his confidence behind the stumps into confidence with bat in hand. Those around him believe in him it is now up to V to put together that one big innings that may well be the start of things to come. 13 catches and 5 stumping’s for the season is another solid performance with the mitts.

Mick Bellam joined the squad from round 4 and enjoyed a consistent season. Opening the batting he had one score under 10 for the year but no half centuries. Conversion is the key for Mick. His fielding, attitude and contributions with the ball (although limited) are all positives looking to the future.

Matt “The Guitar Man” Brooks provided never ending entertainment both on the field and off the field. What you see is what you get. His bowling is first class and he has the ability to change the momentum in games. Brooksy has the knack of capturing big wickets at important times. Brooksy added a new dimension to the team song introducing the guitar solo. No doubt higher grades beckon for Brooksy.

James “Jimmy” Elliott finished the season in 4 th grade on a high. Three half centuries in his last 4 innings will give him the confidence to start next season on a high. Another pleasing aspect for Jimmy was the work he put into his fielding post-Christmas and he reaped the rewards with several excellent catches and much more consistent ground fielding

96

Kev Tyler had a superb season with both bat and ball. No doubt our most consistent performer and stepped as a leader within the team. Competes hard and his experience with both bat and ball in tough situations was invaluable. Stepped up to the plate and skippered the squad mid-season and did a stellar job. Kev was rewarded with “10fa” in the match v Fairfield. Well played Big Kev.

Ankur Patel was another who contributed consistently with both bat and ball. Several hard hitting innings were timely and just what we needed. With the ball Ankur inevitably chipped in with vital wickets early in his spell. An early season hand injury meant we missed his expert slips fielding but he still managed to pull off a couple of screamers in the cordon late in the season.

Aravinth “AK” Kushelakumaran joined the team on the back of consistent performance in 5 th grade. Had limited opportunities with the ball but is a very talented young leggie. With the bat AK played several very important innings in tough situations. The next step for AK is to convert the 20’s into 50+ scores. Late season HSC commitments limited his appearances. AK is an all-round cricketer with plenty of talent.

Alex “Stuey” Henry is very popular member of the squad. Alex started in 5’s and then mixed his time between 3’s and 4’s. He too suffered from dropped catches of his bowling. He is a big hitting batsman who does bomb the ball a long way. If Alex can capitalise on a full season injury free he will be integral to the club as a genuine all-rounder.

Fidah “Uber” Chowdhury had an up and down season with injury and work commitments. When Fids is on song he is a match winner. Consistency is the key for Fids and understanding his role within the team will no doubt help in this area. A big pre-season and a desire to capitalise on his undoubted talent will be the key to a successful 2016/7 for Fids.

Gab D’Angelo is a very talented young cricketer. Gab is another who if he can stay injury free and have a full season on the park will prosper with both bat and ball. Gab bowled some quick accurate spells this season which had good batsmen jumping around in their crease. An excellent fieldsman and hard worker at training.

Shiv Thushyanthan joined Parra this season. He was a victim of a “Spud” fielding drill in preseason which put him behind the 8 ball early on. Shiv played the last 8 matches in 4’s and improved with each match. He is a good team player who contributes with the bat the top of the order and middle order. His left arm orthodox added another layer of variety to our attack. Shiv chipped in with runs and wickets consistently.

Special thanks to Lise Bellam who scored for us throughout the season. Lisa managed to conquer the Merrylands scoreboard this season. The boys really appreciated Lisa giving up her time each week to score.

Congratulations to the staff at Merrylands Oval . What can you say? Won the lower grade ground of the year and it was Merrylands first daylight second. The staff provided an excellent cricket wicket and outfield which offered runs if you batted well and wickets if you bowled well. You cannot ask for any more than that.

The team this year had a great vibe and camaraderie and it was a pleasure to turn up and play each week. We also used other players in the squad such as Dylan Charles, Evan Pitt, Matt Giumelli, Brett Russell, Vinny Satia and Hayden Cole who each contributed to the team’s success and spirit before rightfully being promoted to play higher grades.

Finally, thanks to the club coaches JC, Spud, Sully and Jacko for the tireless work with the squad and to JA for his work with the young spinners each week. To the supporters who turned up to encourage the team throughout the year, no doubt you were entertained on many occasions.

97

We now look forward to 2016/7. The future of the Club is bright with so many talented young cricketers in the Club. If they continue to work hard, stay patient and most importantly continue to enjoy playing their cricket then more success is just around the corner for this great Club.

FIFTH GRADE REPORT Final Position – 5th

We started the season with a commitment to each other not to let the effects of the weather take the dreams of our season away from us, as it did for so many of the group in season 2014/15. To do this we set our goals for a top 3 finish.

At the time of selections the side we had on paper was not only a chance of a top 3 finish but a real chance of topping the table. After a wash out, injuries, pull outs, holidays etc. We took a much different line up into our first game with players coming out of train on and the development squad to see us field a side.

We came into round 3 with no points. A line up that was starting to combine and a real desire to get onto the board. We proceed to win the next four games and really announce ourselves to the competition.

We then had a mediocre run into and out of the break where we only took the one game out of the next six. The dreams and hard work from earlier in the season were in jeopardy. We had to knuckle down and win the last three games into the finals to keep our plan alive. We always believed we were a finals side in this competition and we rose to the occasion winning the last three with a well-timed outright against Fairfield/Liverpool to put ourselves into fifth.

Going into the quarter final we were confident that we could knock off the more fancied teams with the intensity and the momentum we were going in with. Unfortunately we had the cattle, but Easts just came at the game with more urgency. They took their chances where we missed ours and in the end their all-round performance was much better than ours. Even though the result looked pretty bad on paper we know that if we could have brought a little extra to our game, took the half chances and held the momentum for longer at crucial parts of the game it would have been a whole different story.

I want to thank the Club for backing me in the role this year. I really had a wonderful time playing the game I love with a wonderful bunch of young men who play and handle themselves on and off the field with the utmost integrity. It really is a privileged experience to play in the same team as my son and to bestow my knowledge of the game onto the next generation.

A big thank you to the coaching staff and the Committee for their commitment to the running of the season and the support of the 5 th Grade side this year.

A special mention to JA for his mentoring of all the boys and especially myself. It was a great help to bounce an idea off him at the breaks or to get his suggestions into what I did well or other things I could have thought of during the season.

With such a young team we need the support from the parent group, which I was grateful for; be it, getting the lads to the ground and hanging around all day, a stint on the blower vac to dry the pitch, scoring, setting and packing up, running the drinks, spending all morning cutting sandwiches. It’s all a big help that added to a successful season.

I would like to thank Calvo and Matt for the mountain of work they do with development squad and the support they gave us by sending their best players when we were in need. Sometimes dragging them out of their junior’s game and to the detriment of their sides.

A great season of cricket. At times with our backs against the wall we were able to unite together to achieve amazing results and all in the process have a great time doing it. We learnt a lot along the way and one thing we realised for next year, for wherever our cricket takes us, in our next steps, is that in all competition and especially ours with twenty clubs all buying for the one thing, that there is always someone willing to work harder than you to take that very thing you desire away. So we must always be working to be at the top of our game, and when we are then we have to be doing even more to stay there. We must be doing whatever it takes to better ourselves. Improving on all the little things that make the difference, because in the end they

103

all add up to something greater. We must be doing this in life and within our game because you can bet your life that others are also.

Mark McLeod

Players

Stuart Henry

After being in and out of the side early in the season Stuart worked hard to get his regular spot at the top of the order. He went from strength to strength and brought the team home with a fifty against Northern Districts which consolidated the win. Unfortunately it was his other talent in slips catching that took him out for the end of the season and the finals campaign when he broke his fingers with a catch.

Anirban Maitra

Took the number 3 spot for the year and played some valuable innings for the team. He was aiming for more runs from the year than what he totalled, but there was some quality innings in situations which he can take a lot away from for future years. No more that run a ball chase against Sutherland on a wet wicket which set up the season for the team. Valuable performances with the ball either doing a job at one end or taking charge as a strike bowler.

Alex Peters

He took a while to cement his spot in the side but towards the back end of the season we really started to rely on him in the engine room. His stroke play just developed week by week and we were always on the edge of our seat as we knew a real big one was just around the corner. Alex worked hard on his bowling in the nets and it paid off as I started to throw him the ball to break the nagging partnerships.

Harry Peters

Another player to force his way into the side out of the TC squad, and it’s not surprising as he is a talent as a cricketer. He is a keeper and had to play second fiddle to Josh, but he was also arguably our best and most reliable fielder. A couple of standout performances with the bat which highlight the class he has as a batter. In the last round game against Bankstown he was in such good nick that he could hit any boundary he pleased.

Adam Coy

Had a solid year with the bat finding a nice balance of valuing his wicket yet taking the ascendency to the bowlers. He built many valuable partnerships through the middle order at crucial periods of the game. It was with the bowl where Adam really excelled. He the leading wicket taker for the team and always looked like he was going to take wickets with his spells. It was only difficulties getting to training that held him back from progressing through the grades as he lacked the time in the nets to really get the control through the air.

Josh Marquez

Josh struggled to find the form with the gloves which we knew him so well for last year which and saw him take out the rookie of the year award. He was still Mr consistent behind the stumps turning in many a clean sheet for his Team. He also put a huge focus on his batting which paid off for him as he had several opportunities to open the batting. He didn’t look out of place up the order especially when partnering Stuey in a huge opening stand against Blacktown.

104

Jackson Preedy

He took a while to warm into the season, as he is becoming renowned for but once he started to settle in and enjoy himself we saw the kind of form which we rode on his back last year. He had consistent pace, control and that started to transfer into wickets in the book. His energy in the field was outstanding and his batting was as good as ever. We had him lower in the order than what he deserves, but this translated into partnerships at the end of the innings and plenty of red ink.

Rohan Gopal

Forced his way into the side out of TC cup and quickly became a core member of the team. He is Mr Consistency with the ball and will always give you his all. Bowled some quality spells and surprised many a team when they would see how dangerous the 2 nd change would be. Had some great innings with the bat, which would always be above a run a ball. The team mates would always sit down and watch when Rohan went out to bat. Fireworks.

Hamish Starr

Came into the side after the Green Shield campaign and continued to improve from week to week. Really has the X factor as a fast bowler and believes he can get any batsman out. The team gets right behind him as he always hurries the bats up. We final saw it in the final, but he is a beautiful striker of the cricket ball and gave us all something to cheer about. He definitely can field.

Angus Graham

He took the step up this year to become the spread head of the 4 pronged attack. Most days on the Mona wicket he was too good for the opposition and I believe he would have got more wickets if the batsmen could get near the ball. In many games he was thrown the ball when something extra was required to swing the momentum in the game to which he happily obliged.

Julian Greig

After months on the side lines with a back injury and a stint in the TC side we called Juls up to strengthen the batting order. Unfortunately he couldn’t bowl for us, but he offered plenty with the bat scoring runs for us straight away. He devastated the opposition bowlers and played a big part in the team’s late charge into the finals.

Athyban Kumanan

Athy found it a little hard to get into form at the start of the year and then as he was starting to find his feet there was pressure from performance coming through the TC side. Supplied plenty on entertainment for all the boys and wealth of trivia and knowledge.

Ben Roughan

Was called up from the B4 development squad on many occasions to bolster the bowling stocks. Sometimes getting the call in the eleventh hour. He wasn’t out of his league in the grade and settled right into the team as a regular. Some games he had to do the heavy lifting and take the new ball or bowl at the death and always was asking questions of the batsmen.

POIDEVIN GRAY SHIELD REPORT

Final Position: 19th

Losing many of our senior players from last year's team, which made the quarter finals and consisted of 5 players with First Grade experience, it was always going to be a difficult season for us younger players.

The first few games portrayed our inexperience as a team but we also showed a lot of promise, coming through with our first win in the final game of the season against a strong Sydney side. It was a small glimpse of the talent and potential this team could produce in the years to come.

As a young Captain, it was awesome to lead a great bunch of blokes that all shared the same passion for the game and that put in 110% till the last ball of every game. Big thanks to Jason Coleman as Coach for running the warm up and for imparting his knowledge and experience onto me. As always, the ever-reliable Ron Wright making the whole day possible, getting things done at the ground before most of us wake up on a Sunday.

Thank you to Paul Sullivan for helping JC on match day and throughout the season, and also thanks to Gerard Joseph and Margy Pitt for scoring. Thank you to the Club for giving me the opportunity to Captain the side

Below are some player profiles written by both Jason Coleman and I.

Thanks, Tim Ward

Players

Tim Ward (Captain) : 161 runs @32.20, 7 catches Tim led from the front as Captain in all aspects of the game both on and off the field. A tough job for any Captain with such a young inexperienced side. A natural leader who could potentially have 3 more seasons captaining at this level. (Written by Jason Coleman). Highlights: 87 vs Sydney, 42 vs Gordon.

George Joseph : 43 Runs @ 8.60, 12 Dismissals Great pair of Hands. Non-stop energy throughout every innings that helped to keep the boys up for the whole 50 overs. Took an absolute screamer to help us win the game against Sydney. Great Vice-Captain always offering ideas and support. Highlights: 28 V Randwick, 4 Catches v Randwick

Taj Brar : 32 Runs @ 16.00, 1 Wicket @ 23.00 Classy batsman, with the ability to hold down his end, who unfortunately missed a large portion of the PGs season due to being in India. Very handy bowler when you need to break a partnership. Highlights: 1/23 v Gordon

Evan Pitt : 3 Wickets @ 14.00, 3 Runs @ 1.00 Had a great season on Saturdays. Must’ve used all his runs up on a Saturday. A very underrated bowler who can turn the game on its head quickly. Highlights: 2/10 v Penrith

114

Dylan Charles : 52 Runs @ 10.40 Unlucky campaign but showing his class with his 49 in the final game at a run a ball. Highlights: 49 v Sydney

Owen Simonsen : 6 Wickets @ 27.83, 30 Runs @ 6.00 Arguably the worst banter in the club. Great all-rounder who has the potential to dominate a competition when he gets going Highlights: 3/28 v Campbelltown

Matt Giumelli : 55 Runs @ 13.75, 1 Wicket @ 106.00 Great one day bowler with the ability to keep his end tied down with his darted off spin, and is an asset to any team. Talented batsman that can get the team away to a flyer. Highlights: 28 v Sydney, 1/31 v Sydney

Ameesh Kaul : 82 Runs @ 16.40 Talented fielder, scoring a much needed 40 0dd against Gordon. Will be missed next season. Highlights: 42 v Gordon

Brett Russell : 76 Runs @ 19.00 ‘Russler’ was a pleasure to captain, would do his job without a question asked, a great fielder with the ability to throw down the stumps, an awesome bloke to have on the park, played a great innings against Randwick coming in early, making a much needed 50 with the team in dyer straights to give us any hope of chasing down Randwick’s first innings total. Highlights: 50 v Randwick

Liam Lofts : 8 Wickets @ 19.00, 39 Runs @ 13.00 Took a great 5 fa against Randwick Petersham, which was arguably the best spell of bowling this PG’s season. A great team man. Still not sure whether his five fa was his highest achievement of the PG’s season or hitting the 1 st Grade bowler from Gordon for six. Highlights: 5/27 v Randwick

Michael Sullivan : 7 Wickets @ 26.43, 41 Runs @ 20.50 A successful PG’s season excluding getting hit onto the train tracks at where he gained the nickname ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’. Great opening bowler with many skills and variations up his sleeve. Also showed his skill with the willow almost getting the team home against Randwick making 27 at a run a ball. Highlights: 1/21 v Sydney, 27 v Randwick

Gabriel D’Angelo : 4 Wickets @ 18.75 Talented young bowler who has the potential to player higher grades in the future. Did a great job against Gordon and gave us a fighting chance Highlights: 3/ 25 v Sydney

Daniel Beattie : 12 Runs @ 4.00, 5 Wickets @ 22.40 Very good all-rounder, who makes left handed batsman look stupid. (Including his bunny Nick Bertus) Good banter until he copped a Michael Sullivan shoulder charge in warm up at Coogee where Beattie went missing the rest of the PG’s season. Highlights: 1/29 v Randwick, 2/39 v Penrith

115

Liam Gillies : 4 Wickets @ 19.00, 21 Runs @ 21.00 Great start to the season, unfortunately injury hindered his campaign. Highlights: 2/35 v Randwick

A big thank you to all the boys who helped out as 12 th /13 th man this year, Jackson Preedy, Varun Satish and Matthew Brooks, who unfortunately couldn’t be in the starting XI. Both Jason Coleman and I are grateful for your commitment to the team.

Cheers, Tim Ward

PARRAMATTA DISTRICT CRICKET CLUB A W GREEN SHIELD SEASON REPORT

Having gone winless in Green Shield last season and a losing streak stretching to 11 since Dec 2014, a renewed focus and attention was placed on trying to improve Parramatta’s competitiveness at this elite U16 level. Accordingly, a ramped up preseason, selection and preparation phase was put in place in a bid to break the recent run of losses. There was also an acknowledgement that the bulk of the best talent in the younger ages was at the U15 and U14 level and that probably meant another development year, albeit with a very talented group. Accordingly, a squad was selected with an eye on both this season, but the next 2 seasons.

We prepared really well, and that included a hard fought victory 2 wicket victory in the Annual Benaud Cup warm up match at Bowral against Penrith. In that match, we introduced our tear away fast bowler from Grenfell, Hamish Starr (great fast bowler name) who showed he would rattle plenty of feathers with his pace and aggression. Off the back of that effort and some solid form, we entered the season opener against Hawkesbury at home; comfortable our best cricket would be very competitive. As it turned out, this game would be a representative of our whole campaign (our best was good enough, but we didn’t bring it for long enough). We held Hawkesbury to a modest score and were cruising with the bat until inexperience and a lack of match awareness put us behind, a late flurry by some 15 year olds pushed us close (including a stunning 40 no off 22 balls by Matt Ward), but we were undone by our own mistakes. That Hawkesbury went on to play in the final just further shows how close this group were from being very competitive. Thereafter, the campaign was ruined by weather with just 4 of the 7 round matches able to be played. Losses to Northern Districts (semi-finalists) and Sutherland (quarter-finalists) where the toss was crucial cruelled any real prospect of a run at the playoffs. Our last competitive match against Gordon at Killara proved to be the fitting highlight with a wonderful win by 8 wickets. After 14 straight losses stretching over 2 calendar years, it was sensational to sing the song at last. Most pleasing was that this win was largely achieved by the 15 year olds who will be playing again this season. Under age fast bowlers Jacob Workman (3-27) and Ben Roughan (3-21) did the damage with the ball and then under batters Harry King (15), Nikshep Mekala (43), Hayden Goulstone (66no) and the skipper Jacob (27no) got the side home with 8 overs to spare. Overall we have 8 boys able to play again next season and hopefully this experience will hold them in good stead to take Parramatta to the knock out stage next season.

Parramatta Cricket Academy – B4 and B10 Report Building on the success of last year, the PDCC entered 2 sides into the local senior PDCA competition. These sides comprised of junior players from the expanded Parramatta Cricket Academy except for 2 senior captains. The sides were entered into the graded competition with the 15 &15 year old boys playing in the B4 competition, led by Paul Calvert and the 13 & 14 years old boys played in the B10 competition, led by Peter Zann. The aim was to expose these boys to the rigours of senior cricket and fast track their development for Green Shield, DCA Shield and ultimately Grade Competition. PRE SEASON: Our expanded pre-season preparation doubled the number of boys in our squad to 50 and was spot on with the Academy off season program supported by numerous Club Grade players including Will and Tim Affleck, Josh Marquez, Parko, Jacko and Bluey. These guys helped to hardening up the boys physically and technically. SEASON: In a complete contrast to last season where we had no real expectations at all in terms of ladder or wins, there was always going to be some additional pressure to repeat the success of last season. Winning is a skill that also needs to be learned and while the priority was experience, competing hard was also now a key part of the objective. The B4 side dominated the home and away rounds losing just once and winning the minor premiership in a cantor. The B10 side finished the ladder second winning 7 and losing 5, significantly though beating the minor premiers twice. In the B4 side, everyone made a contribution, but standout performances came from Hayden with 426 runs (5 th in the comp) including 115 against Aka, Nikshep Mekala with 294 runs at 42.00 with 2 half centuries and 19 wickets at 12.04 and Matt Ward with 253 runs at 21.08 and 20 wickets at 11.70. AJ Calvert (5/11), Ben Roughan (5/25) and Yehan Peris (5/29) all grabbed ‘michelles’. In the B10 side, standout performances came from Harry King with 339 runs at 37.67 (5 th in the comp) including 121 and 12 wickets at 8.08; Blake Benge with 29 wickets (6 th in the comp) at 6.03 including 2 ‘michelles’ and a best of 6/29; Josh Zann with 277 runs at 34.63.00 with 2 half centuries and 10 wickets at 21.30; Wijith Wijeyasiri with 258 runs at 16.13 and 6 wickets at 12.17. Charlie Tribolet scored his maiden senior half century with 55. Heading into the semi-final stage, both sides played sided by side at Bernie Mullane. The B4s played Aka, a side they had beaten comfortably 3 times during the season, while the B10s played Kellyville who they had split the points. Both sides won the toss and batted. The B10 innings was anchored around a superbly controlled 77 from Harry King and good support from Pete Zann (23) and Blake Benge (12). Every put a high price on their wicket as they reached 159 off the full 70 overs. A good semi-final score. Up the hill it was a completely different story for the B4s. A combination of tight and good pace swing bowling saw a steady stream of Parramatta wickets until they were in diabolical trouble at 7-52 with another retired hurt. Cometh the hour as they say and first Rushi Padhye (29no) and Austin Philip (27) put on a crucial 49 runs for the 8 th wicket to drag the score over 100 and then a crucial 10 th wicket stand between Rushi and Ben Roughan (22) of 41 pushed the score to a defendable 148 off 63 overs. The following day saw the B10s rout Kellyville knocking them over for just 38 with wickets shared by Andrew Turner (2/11), Blake Benge (2/4) and Wijith Wijeyasiri (3/1). Up the hill it was much harder, with 81 overs required to extract a definant Aka side for 81 runs. Matt Ward grabbed 4/13 and Joel Mercer 3/11. Two great results achieved. On to the grand finals and both sides again at Bernie Mullane. The B10s were up against the fourth placed Supersonics who had beaten twice during the season and the B4s against the second placed Wenty Leagues. Again the toss went our way in both games and again both sides batted. The B10 innings was another master class in technique and patience. Wijith Wijeyasiri (30) and Matt Watson (24) put on 50 for the first wicket laying a great foundation. Brentan Smith (34) and Ryan Johns (12) held the middle order together and as the Supersoncis tired late in the afternoon, Blake Benge (48no) put on a power hitting display, clattering several sixes into the tennis courts and crowd. The 8/210 off 67 overs was a formidable score.

124

After the batting dramas of the semi-final, a more consistent batting effort was sought. Albeit with Ben Roughan retiring hurt again on 13, the boys got to 52 before the first wicket went down. Alas, this triggered a mini collapse losing 3 -2 (and effectively 4-2) and before long half the side was in the shed with just 76 on the board. Once again the growing maturity and depth of the group was shown with Matt Ward (32) and Nikshep Mekala (64no) putting on 67 for the 5 th wicket and with some constructive late order hitting, the side finished 8/190 off the 70 overs. Another formidable finals score. The money day arrived and with great momentum from such a good batting day, both sides bowled with purpose and controlled. In the B10 game, gun leg spinner Jayden Kallukalam demolished the Super Sonics with 6/29 including a mind boggling wrong un to bowl the comps best batsmen. All out 79 and the champagne corks were popped. Up the hill, Wenty Leagues batting defiantly, if not with much purpose and after 67 overs of resistance it ended on 107. Nikshep Mekala rounded out a stellar all round performance with 3-17. All of the 31 boys who played across both sides played important parts in the success of the season and the program could not have achieved that success without the wonderful support of Peter Zann, Graeme King, Stephen Goulstone, Todd Watson, Chucky Johns and Tim Smith who made all of this possible by supporting that second team. Finally, a special note of thanks to the parents who dedicated so much of their time getting the boys to these games and supporting our program. Without their support none of this is really possible – well done.

Women’s Grade Cricket Club

Following on from the 2015/16 seasons achievement’s, the PWGCC continued its success by building a Junior Development Squad which competed in a 20/20 Inter District Competition, that advanced into the grand final undefeated, however fell short of securing the gold on this occasion. We also undertook the development of our first Brewers Shield U/17 Sydney Grade representative side. These young ladies competed in the T20 competition semi-finals. Actually, we were defeated by Sydney Uni, who eventually went on to win the series and maintain hold on the shield for the third undefeated season. The PWGCC Brewer side also competed in the longer format 40 overs, missing out on a semi-final gig by one match. When you consider we played the least amount of matches due to the weather….2016/17 holds great promise for these young ladies, especially considering 11 of the squad dominating the NSW Cricket Academy and 1 player representing NSW in the State Carnival.

This now brings us to the premier side within the PWGCC, our Second Grade, which missed the final series last season by one match, which again was the situation in the T20 series, this season even though the PWGCC accumulated the most overall runs… This now left our team with the more tradition 50 over matches in which we led the competition concluding the season with a home semi-final against one of the competitions traditional heavy weights “Bankstown’ which we played a strategic match both with ball and bat, that earned our way into the Sydney Women’s Grade Second Grade Grand Final…against another heavy weight St George, who have won 9 out of the last 10 premierships – what were the chances…St George has now won 10 out of 11…and were the better side on the day.

A few interesting 2 nd Grade points of interest:

50% of the top season performances with the willow were produced by the PWGCC: R Miller – 578 runs, 48.17 average, high score 102, 3 50s, 3 n.o.s K Miller – 507 runs, 39.1 average, high score 76, 3 50s, 3 n.os M Halton – 383 runs, 47.88 average, high score 102, 2 50s, 6 n.o.s T20 v Campbelltown chasing 4/155 PWGCC 0/156

We also represented 50% of the bowling honours Mel Hatton – 24 wickets, 4/13, 10.75 J Bonner – 24 wickets, 4/30, 17.96 T Sweeney – 20 wickets, 4/23, 16.4

Champions do not always win, but they are known for coming back to make amends.. The 2016/17 season is another year of growth. Increasing our playing opportunities with a PDCA Saturday Club Cricket Competition along with entering, Representative District Cricket, whilst galvanising our Brewers and Second Grade teams

Special people are required, for the previously mentioned highlights to eventuate as it takes a monumental amount of work, to meet of internal policy of setting the standards both on and off the field, special thanks in no particular order to the PDCC Committee. Also Jason Holmes (Junior Development Coach), Ron ‘Tiger’ Woods (Director of Coaching), Craig Noble (Secretary), Jenny Todd (kitchen) and Jamie, our Scorer.

The past season witnessed great progress, with each step of this season being fruitful, with an ever ascending, ever improving path knowing that we will never get to the end of the journey, this may seem discouraging, but it’s not, it just adds to the journey.

Thank you.
