Although I love the story and the idea of an intelligent girl who sticks up for herself, I'm always put off by how violent Trunchbull is, the fact that she gets away with it for most of the story, and how Miss Honey stands by watching as it happens. Tim Minchin · THE MATILDA THE MUSICAL STORY T im Minchin sings a Tim Minchin: Roald Dahls Matilda - The Musical to his wife in his current show. But she loves it now. Minchin — a wild- haired Aussie troubadour who in won the best newcomer award in Edinburgh — seems to be a paid-up member of the new rationalist comedy movement. The Richard Dawkins of funny, he also performs a nine-minute poem called Storma broadside against new-age credulity that has been gleefully appropriated by humanist groups. Minchin didn't take up comedy until his late 20s. Before that, he was a jobbing actor and composer working on various "pro-am or co-op" theatre projects in Australia. The likelihood of that increased recently, with a summons from Tim Minchin: Roald Dahls Matilda - The Musical Royal Shakespeare Company to write a musical version of Roald Dahl's novel Matilda, about a rebellious little girl with psychokinetic powers. At first, Minchin thought this was a joke: a decade previously, he had failed to secure the rights for a children's theatre production of the novel in Perth. You can see the attraction — and why the RSC thought Minchin was the man for the job. On stage, kohl-eyed and barefoot, he comes across like a mischievous child. Matilda, he says, plays to "the classic kids' fantasy that one day they just turn up and kick everyone's arse". There's also the fact that Minchin's terrific music and Cole Porter-ish wordplay cry out for the big stage. This is the most important thing I've ever done. Does all this excitement represent a release from some of the frustrations of standup? After all, Minchin's serious songs he always slips one or two into his shows are as effective as his funny ones, and he talks about wanting to record "a non- comic album" soon. Are the chuckle shackles beginning to smart? That's what Matilda represents to him. In the last year, he says, "the comedy's taken off to a different level, where it's a bit scary. The musical's narrative centres on Matilda, a precocious 5-year-old girl with the gift of telekinesiswho loves reading, overcomes obstacles caused by her family and school, and helps her teacher to reclaim her life. Matilda has received widespread critical acclaim and box-office popularity, winning seven Olivier Awardsincluding Best New Musical—at the time, the most such awards ever won by a single show. Inthe Royal Shakespeare Company announced its intention to stage a musical adaptation of Matildaengaging Dennis Kelly as playwright, Tim Minchin as the composer and lyricist, Matthew Warchus as director, Chris Nightingale as orchestrator and music supervision, Rob Howell as set designer and Paul Kieve as illusionist and special effects creator. The show was originally scheduled to begin previews on 18 Octoberbut because of structural and installation work at the theatre, the start of the performances was delayed until 25 October. This cast change started with the departure of Elise Blake on 9 March along with other child cast members. She was replaced by Tasha Chapple. However, Past Matilda Abbie Vena, stayed as a member of the title role until the end of October due to Evans being too unwell to perform. The next cast change was announced on 2 March Much of the children's cast also changed at this time. This new team began performances on 13 March Also at this time, the RSC announced a new online ticket lottery, giving audience members the opportunity to purchase "the best seats in the house" at reduced prices.

Geoffrey Rush and Cate Blanchett each won a prize and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Love Never Dies won three. The awards took place at the Sydney Opera House on Monday night. 'Weird and unexpected' Hunt-Ballard was named best female for playing the famous nanny with magical powers. Lee, who was named best male, for playing Bert in the Disney show said it was "weird and unexpected" to beat theatre legend Anthony Warlow. Speaking to Australian website News.com at the ceremony he said: "I performed at the first Helpmann Awards 10 years ago as the third chorus boy on the left.     DIRECTOR’S NOTE am so happy and blessed to be in a situation I where my daily life is filled with the combination of theatrical artistry and the inner growth of children. This year our blessings are twofold. We celebrate our 25th anniversary of Summer Theater Camp and we finally get to see our campers in person since 2019. Although things may operate a little differently, the heart of our performing arts goals lives on. It is The Performance Project’s wish that the arts will continue to thrive as an integral part of a child’s endeavors. Additionally, it is our philosophy that amidst a methodical world, a child’s heart always be enlightened by wonderment and enhanced by creativity. In rescheduling Minchin’s world-premiere special performance of his brand-new album, Apart Together, we thank all ticketholders for their patience and understanding as we worked through the issues. Perth Festival 2021 now runs from 15 February to 14 March. Thanks to everyone for their patience as we navigated a lockdown together and rearranged the Festival for 2021! All ticket holders are being contacted regarding revised dates and times for their shows. This may take a few days longer than usual. Please note, there is no need to call or email the box office. We will provide further updates as soon as they become available. The two nights under the stars in Kings Park with Minchin, Western Australia’s very own global superstar, and some of the State’s finest musicians promises to be a Festival highlight.
