How do you celebrate 25 years in style? That’s how! And boy did we do that.

The ball on 29th September was a great example of how well we all scrub up, men in their DJs and ladies in elegant frocks and didn’t we all look amazing.

Many thanks to the craft club for making the table decorations which looked just right. The night began with a welcome from our chairman followed by a few words about some of our events and We had chosen Elland Road to tie in achievements over the last the last 25 with it being 25 years since Leeds years from yours truly. United won the 1st division championship (the last team to do so before the Premier League arrived.) The venue couldn’t have been better - I’m pretty sure it’s not often people ask for a purple and black theme.

5 After a scrumptious dinner we were fortunate enough to hear from Gary MacAllister about his memories of winning that historic title. I was privileged to be sat with Gary for dinner - he’s a charming and erudite man with a lovely sense of humour. The DJ then began to play from his 1992 playlist and we danced the night away. I hope all of you who attended enjoyed the evening as much as I did.

There are a few people I must say thank you to: 1. Dawn Lennie who put in hours of organisation. 2. The BOM for their support before and on the night.

Saturday 11th November Leeds Owl Trail Leader: Irene Schwehla

The walk: Different to the usual walks of the HASSRA Leeds walking group, this will be an urban trail to discover some of the unique owls located in Leeds City Centre. The owl is significant because of the appearance of three of them on the Leeds city coat-of-arms, created in 1626 when Charles l made Leeds an official borough. The trail zig zaggs through the metropolis and will take approximately 2 hours.

Meeting point and time: Meet at Leeds train station (outside Marks and Spencer’s) at 10 for 10.15am. Transport: Public – see bus and train times on this link: http://planner.wymetro.com/lts/#/travelInfo Car - car parking in Leeds town centre is expensive, public transport from park and ride locations http://www.wymetro.com/park-and-ride/ is recommended. Lunch: There are plenty of eateries in Leeds City Centre so you will be spoilt for choice, the suggestion is to end the walk at the Scarborough hotel, near Leeds Train station. The real ale selection should appeal to a number of the walking club members https://www.nicholsonspubs.co.uk/restaurants/yorkshireandthehumber/thescarbroughhotel bishopsgatestreetleeds To book: Please let the walk leader know by Wednesday, 8 November: Tel 0777-5576599, email; [email protected] 27 Walking Club

Weekend in the Peak District 20th – 22nd July 2018

Join us for a weekend in the beautiful Peak District National Park - Biggin Hall is an historic house of 17th century origin, centrally situated in peaceful open countryside, 1,000 feet above sea level and the ideal base from which to explore and enjoy stunning landscapes, glimpses of past grandeur and bold enterprises now preserved as industrial archaeology. The diverse nature of the Derbyshire landscape with its dry-stone walling, deep wooded valleys, heather clad moorlands and timeless market towns and villages, provides the perfect setting for a relaxing break. The area is one of England’s finest for walking and cycling; this tranquillity belies the vast wealth generated by Derbyshire’s lead, copper and coal mines, and the dark satanic mills of the Derwent Valley, wealth which financed the building of iconic stately homes. Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Kedleston Hall are within half an hour’s drive of our hotel. HASSRA Leeds Walking Club will lead a short walk on Friday afternoon, a choice of walks will be available on Saturday and a short walk on Sunday morning.

The price includes 2 nights, 4 course dinner, bed & breakfast. Prices: HASSRA Leeds members in a Double / Twin £120 - £130 pp Non-members in a Double / Twin £190 - £200 pp Single HASSRA Leeds Member £143 Single Non-member £235 Please note: · single rooms are limited, using doubles as singles will cost more and we will look to share out the additional cost;

· rooms in the main house command a higher price than those in the Courtyard or Lodge – please state if you would like one (apologies double/twin only)

· the price may come down if there is sufficient interest to book the whole hotel.

Transport: No transport is provided for this trip - we shall be using our own vehicles. If you need, or can offer, a lift on a petrol-sharing basis, please inform the organiser when booking.

CELTIC MANOR RESORT HOTEL IS A 5* RESORT

34 Celtic Manor The Resort Hotel With its soaring atrium, distinctive design and informal traditional luxury, the five-star Resort Hotel provides space to unwind and put back a little of what life takes out. Roman Road Course The very first of the Resort’s courses, Roman Road opened in 1995 and was ranked ‘the top inland course in Wales’ by Golf Monthly Magazine. This par 70 course overlooks the Severn Estuary with views across to Somerset and Devon. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior, it is named after the old Via Julia Roman highway that ran through its fairways. Venue for the 2015 Wales Senior Open and bordered by woodland, this challenging course features some long open fairways but also a number of twists and turns through trees and across streams. Montgomerie Course Offering a spectacular par 69 challenge, the legendary Colin Montgomerie has called on all his Ryder Cup experience to create a course with many exciting tests of strategy. Montgomerie has also drawn on his roots in Scottish links golf to create a traditional feel enhanced by deep and penal pot bunkers. Spectacular views abound with dramatic tee shots over valleys and breathtaking downhill shots. It was the stage for the 2015 Wales Senior Open, the opening event of the EuroPro Tour season. Twenty Ten Course Built to stage the 2010 Ryder Cup, the first course to be built specifically for golf’s greatest team tournament, it measures a robust 7,493 yards off the back tees and has a par of 71. With water hazards on half of its holes, the course has six signature holes and presents many more memorable tests and risk-and-reward dilemmas. One of the features of the spectacular course is its variety with many of the earlier holes having a links-like feel with long rough and greenside swales, before the middle section reveals the full extent of the lake-lined challenge. A tough finishing stretch culminates in a real sting in the tail at the 18th.

RAMSIDE HALL Offering the perfect blend of traditional features, luxury accommodation and first-class service, Ramside Hall is the ideal setting for a break in County Durham.

Situated on the outskirts of Durham City, the hotel boasts 127 luxurious bedrooms and suites, each offering its own unique charm with stunning views across 350 acres of beautiful private grounds. Once you’ve relaxed into your surroundings, our luxury spa provides the ideal opportunity to unwind, with one of the UK’s largest hydrotherapy pools, a state-of-the-art gym and a huge range of specialist treatments on offer.

PRINCE BISHOPS COURSE The par 72 course measures 6,851 yards from its championship tees and has views of world famous Durham Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the inspiration for Ramside’s second course – The Cathedral Course opened in September 2014. The Prince Bishops' course is named after the warrior clergymen who ruled over the lawless North from Durham Castle after the Norman Conquest in the 11th Century. The course has spirit of adventure and features 16 water hazards, reachable par 5’s, driveable par 4’s, and short holes that demand shot-making skills from wedge to woods.

Designer Jonathan Gaunt laid out a golf course that delivers risk and reward golf at its best. Water comes into play on 10 holes and there are nine doglegs on the card which demand good strategy and the ability to move the ball both ways if you are to score at your lowest.

The course is fair. The fairways are wide and generous and there is a conservative option available on every hole so that any standard of golfer can enjoy Ramside’s challenge.

CATHEDRAL COURSE The Cathedral Course has been built on rolling countryside between the villages of Belmont and Pittington with breath-taking natural features including ridges, becks and valleys.

The course extends out over a broad hilltop with views of Durham Cathedral and as far afield as the Angel of the North in Gateshead, before dropping down into a valley and rising up again to return to the parkland estate where its closing holes end back at the clubhouse and hotel.

The middle holes are laid out across a high plateau, previously called ‘Hilltop Farm’ - with wide-open skies and 360 degree views - then drop down into a striking valley with dramatic elevation changes, mature trees, steep banksides and a coursing beck.

Designer Jonathan Gaunt calls the stretch of holes from the 11th to the 14th ‘Ramside’s Amen Corner.’ The downhill par-three 12th bears an uncanny resemblance to its famous counterpart in Georgia but instead of Rae’s Creek, Sherburn Beck stands guard at the front of the green.

38 Tee-Time Treat!

Leeds-based HASSRA Leeds Golf Society ‘putt’ their fundraising skills to the test as they raise a huge total in aid of Kirkwood Hospice

Local fundraiser and golf-enthusiast, Paul Bentley, made a recent visit to Kirkwood, the Hospice in Dalton, to present a generous cheque for the amount of £1,426 on behalf of the HASSRA Leeds Golf Society.

Following a two year stint as Captain of the Society, the money presented by Paul represents the proceeds of various fundraising events held during this time, in aid of the society’s chosen Charity of the Year, Kirkwood Hospice.

Having recently completed this period of captaincy, it was the perfect opportunity for Paul to make a visit to the Hospice and present the funds raised.

After seeing his Grandmother and other family members access the Hospice’s services, local Mirfield man, Paul, made the decision to make Kirkwood chosen Charity of the Year for the Society and was more than happy to support a local cause.

Together with friends of the Hassra Leeds Golf Society, the Kirklees fundraiser got his thinking cap on as how best to raise as much as possible for Kirkwood Hospice.

Made up from raffles, bets on the outcome of the game and generous contributions from Society Members themselves, an incredible total was raised over the two years. As put simply by Paul, “golfers are very generous.”

In a recent visit, Paul was delighted to present the funds to Kirkwood Nurse, Anna Marie Wilkinson, who accepted on behalf of the Hospice. After a tour around the beautiful and award-winning Hospice gardens, Paul commented that he knew the money would be put to good use.

62 BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONS HASSRA TRIPS AND EVENTS

The following terms and conditions will apply to all events to ensure that every member has a fair opportunity to participate in events. The terms and conditions should be read in conjunction with the relevant booking form.

1. Wherever possible events will be advertised with a closing date for applications that is at least 4 weeks from the date first advertised, including proposed events where expressions of interest are being requested.

2. Persons wishing to travel together should complete one application form per room, submit their applications together, and determine a lead person who will be responsible for forwarding payments due and act as the contact on behalf of the group via a signed disclaimer agreeing to these terms and conditions.

3. A booking will not be accepted or entered in a draw without the correct deposit and signed disclaimer.

4. Once the closing date is reached, the number of applicants wishing to travel will be determined. Where there are sufficient places for all applicants, then deposit cheques will be banked and places confirmed.

5. Members should be aware that once deposit cheques have been banked they are not returnable and travellers will be liable to pay full price of the trip (unless the place is subsequently filled). Full price means the un discounted "non member" price. Where necessary, HASSRA (Leeds) will provide an invoice for the full price for insurance purposes but travellers need to be aware that the cost of insurance, (if purchased), is non-refundable.

6. Travel operators will be asked to date insurance cover from the date on which they receive notification of the persons travelling. It is therefore essential to obtain adequate travel insurance before booking if you do not purchase the insurance offered.

7. Single supplements. There will be no member discount on supplements for travellers wishing to secure a single room. Where members indicate on the application form that they are willing to share a room with someone of the same sex, the organiser will arrange for pairing. If an individual has indicated that they are willing to share, they will not have to pay a single supplement even if no pair is available.

8. Where the number of applicants exceeds the places available, a random draw of application forms will determine those successful in receiving a place, subject to Clause 8. Cheques accompanying these applications will then be processed. Remaining applications will continue to be drawn at random to determine the order of the reserve list.

9. The trip organiser will be granted up to two places on that trip without entry into the ballot. An organiser is the person who arranges the trip on behalf of the HASSRA Events Committee, whether or not s/he is a member of the Committee.

10. Where expressions of interest have been sought for a proposed trip, if that trip is subsequently confirmed, applications received from those expressing interest prior to the closing date will be given priority to book before any unfilled places on the trip are advertised. On these occasions, once the closing date is reached, remaining places will be filled on a first come first served basis.

11. Members who have been unsuccessful in a ballot for a trip may record this on their application for the next trip, to the same destination, and will be given priority for available spaces.

12. Applications from solely non-member groups, i.e. not accompanying a full HASSRA member, wishing to participate in an event will be considered only in the event of places remaining after the closing date has passed.

13. The priority order will be: a) Organiser +1, b) Previously unsuccessful on similar trip (ballot if necessary), c) Prior registered interest (ballot if necessary), d) Other Members, e) Non Member groups.

14. Non-members may apply to travel at the discounted rate on an event provided that they satisfy the criterion for associate membership and send a completed application for membership together with the appropriate payment, on or before the closing date for the trip. Associate Membership will last for 12 months from the date of processing the application. The Committee reserves the right to determine specific criteria for prior membership on certain trips. Any such requirements will be notified in the advertisement. Participants are reminded to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner while attending HASSRA sponsored trips and events. Formal complaints may prejudice an individual's eligibility for future trips.
