Started in response to people wanting to get fit using the same course used in the Race for Life, they have been getting fantastic results for their clients ever since. When you consider that you get a whole month of exercise classes for no more than £28 they are one of the most cost effective ways to exercise and get results, quickly. You can also make use of the classes at Wakefield and Bradford also for the same cost for maximum flexibility and benefit. The success of the clients is largely down to the instructors, all past or present serving military personnel, and they certainly understand how to motivate and support the clients through their one hour exercise session. So if you are not getting any fitter using your current methods or need that EXTRA push and motivation then get yourself down there and join some of your colleagues.

    West Yorkshire Group of the Victorian Society 2011-12 Programme: Autumn and Winter Sunday, 23rd October: Gorton Monastery and Ford Madox Brown in Manchester Gorton Monastery is hardly a hidden treasure as anyone travelling by train to Manchester can vouch. One of the finest examples of High Victorian architecture, it was designed by E. W. Pugin for the Franciscan order between 1866-72. The church closed in 1989 and but for the commitment of a group of local activists, it was likely that it would have been demolished. Much vandalised the Trust set up in 1996 embarked on a successful £6m restoration which was completed eleven years later. We will have a tour of the building in the morning lasting an hour followed by a lunch of soup, sandwiches, cakes etc. Total cost £15. In the afternoon (2pm), we will have a bespoke tour of the Ford Madox Brown Exhibition at Manchester City Art Gallery which has brought together 140 paintings and drawings. The cost of entrance to the exhibition and the tour will be £13 or £11 for seniors. The tour lasts an hour and after a quick drink in the café, we will have time to look at Brown’s murals in Manchester Town Hall. For those travelling by train from Leeds should catch the 9.40 train which arrives in Manchester at 11.08 and we will take the 205 bus from Piccadilly which stops outside the church. If taking a train from elsewhere, or for those travelling by car, we all meet outside the church at 11.30am.

Dear Members We hope you are all enjoying the summer and are having the chance to catch up on plenty of reading. Throughout the summer, we have been working to develop an events programme for the autumn that we hope will appeal to members and new visitors. Key events to men on include our annual contribuon to Heritage Open Days which will run from the 7th to 10th September, and ‘Out of Hours’ a series of immersive theatre performances in partnership with local theatre company ‘A Quiet Word’ and Leeds City Council. These will take place from the 5th and 6th October. In conjuncon with the Big Bookend fesval, we will be welcoming our member Frances Brody who will be launching and reading from her new book ‘Death in the Stars’ on the 7th October. On the 13th Octo‐ ber the Library will welcome Caryl Phillips, our newly elected Patron, along with Glyn Maxwell and Im‐ az Dharker for an evening of poetry to remember David Oluwale. The event organised with the Re‐ member Oluwale Trust and in associaon with Leeds University will feature an evening of poetry and readings from three of the country’s leading poets and mark what is hopefully the first of many visits for Carl Huon Caryl to the Library as our patron. Details of all these events, including mings and admission prices (where applicable) can be found both on our website and within the Library.

    Individual and Institution in the Musical Life of Leeds 1900-1914

    Individual and Institution in the Musical Life of Leeds 1900-1914 Robert Demaine Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of York Department of Music July 2000 Abstract In the years immediately before the First World War the city of Leeds enjoyed a rich and diverse musical life which has remained largely unchronicled thanks in part to an emphasis on London in much English musical history. This thesis attempts to redress the balance by charting the development of local institutions in the fields of choral, orchestral and chamber music which were created by the industry and dedication of a small number of outstanding individuals, now long-forgotten, whose efforts in the cause of Leeds music are placed within their social and historical context. The influence of the Leeds Triennial Festival, that cornerstone of the city's musical reputation in the latter half of the nineteenth century, is considered along with the work of the two leading choral societies which dominated so much of Leeds musical life at the time. Pioneering enterprises, such as those to establish a permanent municipal orchestra in the city and a regular series for the performance of contemporary chamber music, are examined in detail against the backdrop of a society undergoing fundamental change. It is often assumed that the First World War brought a violent and sudden end to what might be viewed as a golden age in English music. This thesis will show how the forces of change were already being experienced within local musical institutions which were attempting to come to terms with them even as the apocalyptic events of 1914 were approaching.

The Council adopted the ability to licence lap dancing clubs and other premises which provide sexual entertainment in the same regime as sex shops and sex cinemas in January 2011. At the same time the council adopted a Statement of Licensing Policy to guide applicants. 2. Following the initial licensing of seven lap dancing clubs as sex establishments in June 2012, the council undertook to review the policy to ensure it still met the needs of the people of Leeds. 3. Licensing Committee formed a working group of Members and officers to review the policy. A draft policy was submitted for public consultation from 18 th March to 26 th April. The responses are detailed in this report. Recommendations 4. That Licensing Committee consider the responses to the public consultation and the recommendation from the Working Group. 5. That Licensing Committee consider the draft policy and refer it to Executive Board for approval, with the policy coming into effect on 1 st September 2013. 1 Purpose of this report 1.1 To present for consideration of Licensing Committee this report as the response to the public consultation.

    The Dr. Alister MacKenzie Chronology The 19th Revision November 2016 The MacKenzie Chronology Project The Project In the late 1990’s Nick Leefe and Bob Beck launched an effort to document the physical presence and movements of the great architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie. That effort sparked club secretaries, historians, architects, professional writers, enthusiasts – in short, a global community of MacKenzie admirers – to share their knowledge. This, the 19th Revision of “The Dr. Alister MacKenzie Chronology,” is the latest product of that collective and continuing generosity, and once again expands upon the previous revision. Why are MacKenzie’s whereabouts important? A timeline establishes a foundation of fact. Upon this foundation researchers can build their narratives of history. Without this fact base, large gaps in time appear, and speculation is the all too-common and unfortunate result - the quality of scholarship is impoverished. The ramifications can be significant - original design features and perhaps entire courses disappear or suffer disfiguration, writings are misunderstood or misinterpreted, attributions are missed or made improperly. As readers, as golfers, and as caretakers of the game of golf, we suffer.
