The Network would like to challenge your employees to take part in the fun go:cycling Workplace Challenge. The Challenge is the latest free campaign on offer from the Network to help you with your Travel Plan. Using the challenge website, your employees can start logging their cycle miles and journeys. Each bike mile registered is converted to points and points can be used to redeem vouchers from a wide range of retailers including Raleigh, Chain Reaction and Hello Fresh. During September, all cycle journeys logged will also be entered into a competition to win a range of prizes including high-street vouchers. There will be separate prizes for novice, intermediate and advanced riders to give everybody a chance of winning. To encourage people to take part everyone who registers at least one Workplace Challenge journey will be entered into a prize draw to win public transport tickets.

The Network would like you to promote the campaign by forwarding the employee newsletter to all staff or adding the text onto your intranet site. Also, in the next couple of days you should receive a go:cycling Workplace Challenge promotional pack with posters and postcards promoting the challenge.

go:cycling Workplace Challenge Employer Awards

To encourage competition between organisations during September we have go:cycling Workplace Challenge employer awards up for grabs. The Network will be providing a trophy to the organisation that encourages the most participants in the Challenge in proportion to their overall employee numbers. Additional awards will be presented to the employers who have the highest mileage and journeys logged for commuting journeys made by their employees. We are planning to present the trophies to the winning organisations at a Breakfast seminar in the autumn. To be in with a chance of winning one of these coveted trophies for your organisation all you need to do is encourage as many employees as possible to take part in the Challenge. Good Luck!

GREEN Travel Planners Limited issues details of such campaigns to you because, to ensure customers of the co-op continue to receive a discount from Metro, we must provide evidence of what we have done to promote the use of public transport and to promote sustainable initiatives to all employees. On behalf of GREEN Travel Planners Limited, there are some ways that you can help us to gather the evidence we need, whether you buy a ticket with us or not. Please let me know if you take part in any of the initiatives we tell you about and please let us know if you already do anything to support sustainable travel, for instance, car sharing, walking to work, cycling to work.

Important note This is not a Group Choice or HASSRA Leeds organised tour. You will be responsible for arranging and booking your own package and therefore there is no ATOL protection. This means that in the unlikely event that your chosen scheduled airline fails you will still be responsible for any contracted hotel costs or for arranging replacement flights. In practice the risks are small as the hotel can be cancelled without charge up to 3 weeks prior to travel and you can mitigate the risk by using a credit card for flights (over £100) or arranging Scheduled Airline failure insurance (available from as little as £1 per day eg: this is included as part of Columbus Direct’s basic travel insurance policy at under £7 for a week’s cover). The hotel booking conditions for this special offer are clearly displayed on their website during the booking process and differ from their normal conditions.

Next Event Thursday 17th October New Zealand North Island

5.30p.m. In the Restaurant Meet from 5.00p.m. In the Woodpecker Bar

Presented by Pat & Mike Ferguson On Thursday 17th October we are completing our journey around New Zealand with a range of North Island wines. Our 3 white wines include a Riesling and a Sauvignon Blanc from Martinborough, and a Chardonnay from New Zealand’s oldest vineyard. Our reds include 2 excellent Pinot Noirs from Martinborough, and a Bordeaux style blend from Hawkes Bay. We enjoyed these wines very much on our travels around this beautiful country; come and join us in what we are sure will be an interesting and enjoyable tasting. The cost for HASSRA Leeds members will be around £8.

What's Coming Up?

Friday 1st November – Random Tasting – Presented by Fred Wild

This is a blind wine tasting with a difference. You will know what wines we are tasting, the grapes, a bit of background, the price and you’ll have the tasting notes but you won’t know which wine is which. I’ve chosen full-bodied red wines as they offer the greatest range of flavours and the most unusual but how many of us can tell the difference between a wine with pencil lead and another with leather and mahogany. I can see this being an interesting evening! The cost will be around £10.00 depending on numbers.

Thursday 14th November – Aperitifs/Dessert/Digestifs – Presented by Bob Swindale

SPECIAL OFFER REMINDER : Don't forget our special offer: Any HASSRA Leeds member who attends the wine club for the first time pays only half price for the event.. If you decide you like it enough to join the club the night is FREE! For further information contact any of us:

HASSRA Leeds Write Up Rambling Club Austrian Trip August 31st- 6th September 2013

In September 20 of us flew with Ingham’s from Leeds and Bradford to Mayrhofen in the Austrian Tyrol for a week of walking yes; but also for all the other activities, pleasures and excursions on offer. The plane was on time, the hotel rooms, food and facilities were superb and the weather just got better and better. Mayrhofen and the neighbouring villages and hills were glorious, as was the warm apple strudel with cream and the steins of locally brewed beer.

Sunday was the one poor day with drizzle throughout a short familiarisation tour of the town by the local tourist board. Monday saw an improvement and was the highlight of the holiday for some of the group as they went Llama trekking – Llamas are very friendly but don’t move very fast and need a lot of watching as they keep stopping to eat! Some of us caught a local bus utilising our elbows to ensure that everyone took their turn in the “queue” and went to the breathtaking Schlegeis Reservoir for an eight mile hike up the valley before crossing the border into Italy. Lunch was eaten in the Pfitscher Joch Haus where we found the prices to be far higher than in Austria (what a change from a few years ago). Just as in Britain the summit proved to always be beyond the next summit – the right hut proved to be the fourth one sighted. It’s also worth recording that the paths are so clearly marked that it would be very difficult to get lost.

Tuesday saw some intrepid explorers travelling up several cable cars to the Hintertux glacier to experience the breathtaking views. Skiing goes on here all year round. The world’s highest twin-cable continuous loop cable car, the Gletscherbus 3, is an experience in itself. The view from the panorama terrace extends to the Großglockner, the Dolomites and the Zugspitze. Others went up the first part of the cable car only and then climbed a further 500m for a watching wildlife walk with the tourist office. Lots of marmots were seen but none of the illusive ibex. Several people went on an Inghams trip to the Schrauben waterfall described as one of the best in the area. The feeling was generally “We’ve got lots better in Yorkshire”. However the trip later in the week to the Krimml Falls ensured that even we had to agree that these are hard to match in Yorkshire!

Over the course of the week we enjoyed beautiful local and easy to follow walks with fabulous views, coach trips, guided cycle rides, and found our own way by train to visit Salzburg and Innsbruck. One of us climbed the local mountain with Peter Habeler one of the worlds greatest mountaineers, one couple even went tandem paragliding from a height of 2100 metres. The leisure facilities at the hotel including pool and sauna came in useful before dinner each evening, when we swapped stories of our day’s adventures. By Friday the weather was over 30 degrees, perfect weather for coffee, cake and beer sat at an outside café table or at one of the many mountain huts to watch the world go by before we came home on the Saturday.

The consensus was we must do Austria again, – so we are!

35 BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONS HASSRA TRIPS AND EVENTS

The following terms and conditions will apply to all events to ensure that every member has a fair opportunity to participate in events. The terms and conditions should be read in conjunction with the relevant booking form.

1. Wherever possible events will be advertised with a closing date for applications that is at least 4 weeks from the date first advertised, including proposed events where expressions of interest are being requested.

2. Persons wishing to travel together should complete one application form per room, submit their applications together, and determine a lead person who will be responsible for forwarding payments due and act as the contact on behalf of the group via a signed disclaimer agreeing to these terms and conditions.

3. A booking will not be accepted or entered in a draw without the correct deposit and signed disclaimer.

4. Once the closing date is reached, the number of applicants wishing to travel will be determined. Where there are sufficient places for all applicants, then deposit cheques will be banked and places confirmed.

5. Members should be aware that once deposit cheques have been banked they are not returnable and travellers will be liable to pay full price of the trip (unless the place is subsequently filled). Full price means the undiscounted "non member" price. Where necessary, HASSRA (Leeds) will provide an invoice for the full price for insurance purposes but travellers need to be aware that the cost of insurance, (if purchased), is non-refundable.

6. Travel operators will be asked to date insurance cover from the date on which they receive notification of the persons travelling. It is therefore essential to obtain adequate travel insurance before booking if you do not purchase the insurance offered.

7. Single supplements. There will be no member discount on supplements for travellers wishing to secure a single room. Where members indicate on the application form that they are willing to share a room with someone of the same sex, the organiser will arrange for pairing. If an individual has indicated that they are willing to share, they will not have to pay a single supplement even if no pair is available.

8. Where the number of applicants exceeds the places available, a random draw of application forms will determine those successful in receiving a place, subject to Clause 8. Cheques accompanying these applications will then be processed. Remaining applications will continue to be drawn at random to determine the order of the reserve list.

9. The trip organiser will be granted up to two places on that trip without entry into the ballot. An organiser is the person who arranges the trip on behalf of the HASSRA Events Committee, whether or not s/he is a member of the Committee.

10. Where expressions of interest have been sought for a proposed trip, if that trip is subsequently confirmed, applications received from those expressing interest prior to the closing date will be given priority to book before any unfilled places on the trip are advertised. On these occasions, once the closing date is reached, remaining places will be filled on a first come first served basis.

11. Members who have been unsuccessful in a ballot for a trip may record this on their application for the next trip, to the same destination, and will be given priority for available spaces.

12. Applications from solely non-member groups, i.e. not accompanying a full HASSRA member, wishing to participate in an event will be considered only in the event of places remaining after the closing date has passed.

13. The priority order will be: a) Organiser +1, b) Previously unsuccessful on similar trip (ballot if necessary), c) Prior registered interest (ballot if necessary), d) Other Members, e) Non Member groups.

14. Non-members may apply to travel at the discounted rate on an event provided that they satisfy the criterion for associate membership and send a completed application for membership together with the appropriate payment, on or before the closing date for the trip. Associate Membership will last for 12 months from the date of processing the application. The Committee reserves the right to determine specific criteria for prior membership on certain trips. Any such requirements will be notified in the advertisement. Participants are reminded to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner while attending HASSRA sponsored trips and events. Formal complaints may prejudice an individual's eligibility for future trips.
