SOCIAL SERVICE AWARDS

AMERICAN LEGION SCHOOL CITIZENSHIP AWARD: Presented to the boy and girl of the graduating class who best represents those qualities of character and ability, which are calculated to result in better citizenship. Established in 1949.

SCHOLASTIC AWARDS

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE RECOGNITION DAY HONOREE: Each senior who ranks in the top 1% of his/her class in the state is recognized at a banquet in Pierre hosted by Associated School Boards of South Dakota. During the ceremony, each will be recognized personally by the Governor and photographed receiving a certificate and commemorative pin.

AMERICAN NEWS SCHOLASTIC STARS AWARD: This award recognizes seniors who have displayed academic excellence, participated in diverse activities and engaged in their community.

AP NATIONAL SCHOLAR: This award is presented to students who received an average grade of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

AP SCHOLAR: This award is presented to students who have completed three or more A.P. Exams with grades of 3 or higher.

AP SCHOLAR WITH HONOR: This award is presented to students who have earned average grades of at least 3.25 on all A.P. Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN BUSINESS: Given to the senior business student who best represents the high standards set by the business faculty at Central High School.

DAKTRONICS ACADEMIC ALL-STATE AWARD: Thirty seniors in the state are annually selected based on class ranks and ACT or SAT scores. Ten will receive Gold Medals and be on the First All-State Team. Ten will receive Silver Medals and be on the Second All-State Team. The third ten will receive Bronze Medals and be on the Third All-State Team.

NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FINALIST: A junior who takes the PSAT/NMSQT and scores in the top 1 percent of those tested in his/her state becomes a Semifinalist in the competition. In order to advance to Finalist standing he/she must also take the SAT and earn a score that confirms performance on the PSAT/NMSQT, have a record of consistently high academic performance, and complete the National Merit Scholarship application.

PRESIDENT’S AWARD FOR EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE: This award was established to encourage students to achieve high academic standards by recognizing and rewarding them for educational excellence. Students are to earn a grade point average of 90 on a 100-point scale (or a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale). In addition, students must achieve the 85th percentile or higher in math or reading on college admissions examinations such as SAT or ACT.

REGENTS’ SCHOLAR DIPLOMA: The Department of Education and Cultural Affairs and the Board of Regents recognizes seniors committed to academic excellence. Recipients of Regents’ Scholar diplomas are selected for automatic entrance to any of the six institutions of higher education in South Dakota. To be eligible, a student must have completed the following courses with no final grade below a “C” and a grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale: 4 units of English, 4 units of mathematics, 4 units of science, 3 units of social studies, 2 units of a modern or classical language (including American Sign Language) or 2 units of CTE, or a combination of the two, ½ unit of fine arts, and ½ unit of computer science.

TOUCHSTONE ENERGY SCHOLAR OF THE WEEK: A senior who excels in the classroom and community is selected each year and recognized by Touchstone Energy Cooperatives and KSFY-Television with a $100 check and a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship.

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS SCHOLASTIC EXCELLENCE AWARD: This award, given to a junior or senior, reinforces the “tough and smart” image of the Marine Corps by recognizing noteworthy academic achievements as well as leadership excellence. The nominee need not be a “straight A” student but could be one who showed great academic improvement during the past semester or year.

U.S. PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS PROGRAM CANDIDATE: Seniors are selected to compete in the program based on high academic achievement. 141 of the nominated students nationally are chosen as U.S. Presidential Scholars.

YOUTH BUSINESS ADVENTURE DELEGATE: Juniors who are sincerely interested in actively participating in a week-long program geared toward planning for a future in business apply for the program which is held at either Black Hills State University or the University of South Dakota each June.

HISTORY AWARD: Given as recognition to a boy or girl who have shown the greatest excellence in American History during their sophomore years.

FINE ARTS AWARDS

BAD RIVER ARTWORKS SENIOR ART AWARD: This award recognizes senior student(s) in Art III who have demonstrated excellence and maintained an “A” average.

ELIZABETH CUMMINGS AWARD: Presented by Chapter B of PEO in memory of Elizabeth Cummings, former supervisor of elementary music in the Aberdeen Schools. The award is presented to the senior male who, in the opinion of the music directors, has been outstanding in leadership and service at Central High School.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT SENATOR AWARD: This award is designed to recognize outstanding leadership, unselfish service and a willingness to be involved in Student Senate activities. The recipients are chosen by the executive committee of the Student Senate and its officers are not eligible for this recognition. This award is for either a junior or senior.

REVA RUSSELL MEMORIAL PRIZE: Presented by Chapter B of PEO in memory of Reva Russell, former supervisor of vocal music in the Aberdeen Schools. The award is presented to the senior girl who is outstanding in musical ability and music service to the school and community, and has maintained a grade of “B” or better in each subject for each nine-week period in her senior year.

ROBERT REISENWEBER AWARD IN FORENSICS: Given to the senior boy and senior girl who, in the opinion of the speech faculty, have participated actively, enthusiastically, and faithfully in forensics. This award is based on the student’s conduct in competition as well as daily school life. This plaque is to remain in the speech classroom. AMERICAN LEGION HIGH SCHOOL ORATORICAL CONTEST WINNER: High school students under the age of 20 are eligible to participate. Competition begins at the post levels and advance to a state competition. Speaking subjects must be on some aspect of the US Constitution.

STUDENT SENATE PRESIDENTIAL AWARD: This is a gavel awarded to the Student Senate President.

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS “SEMPER FIDELIS” BANDSMAN AWARD: This award is given to a musician who maintains a high degree of proficiency with an instrument through practice and rehearsal. In doing so, the musician displays traits that Marines consider essential to being a good leader…endurance, knowledge, unselfishness, dependability, enthusiasm and loyalty.

LEADERSHIP AWARDS

DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION GOOD CITIZEN AWARD: This award, voted on by the Senior Class, goes to a senior who possesses the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and participation.

HUGH O’BRIAN YOUTH FOUNDATION LEADERSHIP AWARD: This award goes to a sophomore who, in turn, attends a leadership training seminar. One delegate per school attends the state conference. KEYSTONE AWARD IN LEADERSHIP: Given to the sophomore, junior, or senior who has displayed outstanding characteristics of leadership in curricular or extra-curricular work, regardless of scholastic rank. Members of Keystone National Honor Society are not eligible for this award. Established in 1933.

SOUTH DAKOTA LEGISLATIVE PAGE: This opportunity is afforded students sponsored by local legislators who desire to spend one- or two-week terms in Pierre in January, February or March of their Senior Year.

MATH AND SCIENCE AWARDS

BAUSCH AND LOMB SCIENCE AWARD: Given to a member of the junior class who has demonstrated high achievement and rigor in science classes. Voted on by CHS science teachers.

BERNICE EYE-HELEN NEUBAUER MATH AWARD: Given to a former Simmons Junior High School student(s) who excelled in the field of mathematics. Bernice Eye was a Simmons mathematics teacher.

BIOLOGY AWARD: This is an honorary award given to an outstanding biology student who has shown high scholastic ability and interest in the field, and who shows promise of being successful in one of the careers related to biology.

CHEMISTRY AWARD: This is an honorary award given to an outstanding chemistry who has shown high scholastic ability and interest in the field, and who shows promise of being successful in one of the careers related to chemistry.

HKG ARCHITECTS AWARD: Awarded to the student who has shown by his participation in math, science and related fields for at least two years an aptitude and superior work in these fields, and has been an asset to the entire school. Established in 1959.

PHYSICS AWARD: This is an honorary award given to an outstanding physics student who has shown high scholastic ability and interest in the field, and who shows promise of being successful in one of the careers related to physics.

RENSSELAER MATH AND SCIENCE AWARD: A medal is presented to the junior who has excelled in the fields of mathematics and science. Its purpose has been to recognize the achievement of outstanding students and, if possible, motivate them toward study in scientifically oriented fields. This medal is received from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute every year.

ATHLETIC AWARDS

ATHLETIC BOOSTERS ATHLETE OF THE YEAR SCHOLARSHIP AWARD: These scholarship awards are given to one senior male and one senior female multi-sport athletes who reflect inspiration, dedication, motivation, and enthusiasm. Established in 1999.

CY HOLGATE MEMORIAL AWARD: Established in 1975 in memory of Cy Holgate, superintendent of the Aberdeen Public Schools from 1951-1970 and a member of the Aberdeen Public School Faculty for 40 years. This award is given to the senior boy or girl who has shown interest, dedication and achievement in athletics.

DAVE AND MARY ANN SHAW TRACK SCHOLARSHIP: This award will be given to a senior with high moral character who enjoys and has excelled in middle or long distance events.

DON AND ROSEMARY RESHETAR SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship will be given to a student who shows excellence in athletics, character, teamwork, and leadership as well as strives to achieve in the classroom.

FRANK AWARD: Given by Burton Frank and his family to a senior football letterman in memory of outstanding C.H.S. athletes George Kirchgasler, Maurice Saunders, and Quentin Hoff who were outstanding Central athletes.

JEWETT AWARD: Given to the senior boy or girl who has lettered in at least one of the major sports and has a high scholastic ranking during his/her four years in high school. Established in 1992 by H. C. Jewett, Jr. JOYCE MANNING SPIRIT AWARD: To be given to a cheerleader who has shown dedication, devotion, and enthusiasm in the same spirit in which Joyce Manning gave of her time and talents to the Athletic Boosters. Established in 1990.

KIWANIS/WILLARD ELLIS AWARD: This award is presented to an athlete whose achievement in the field of language study has been notable and whose activities have demonstrated interest in and appreciation for language as a factor in international understanding and general advancement. Established in 1950.

LARRY LOVRIEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: This award is given to a CHS senior soccer player and is selected by all of the boys’ soccer team coaches. The recipient should demonstrate the traits of honesty, integrity, hard work, self- discipline, a commitment to his teammates and a goal larger than himself. Other important qualities include: leadership, friendship, humor, keeping his word, setting an example, self-sacrifice, not making excuses, humility in victory, dignity in defeat, and caring about teammates by lifting them up when they fail and depending on them to lift him up in those moments as well.

LT. DARYL D. SUMMERS MEMORIAL AWARD: A scholarship given to a senior athlete with high academic standing. Daryl D. Summers was a 1960 graduate of Central High School where he quarterbacked the Golden Eagles, was an excellent student, was a homecoming king candidate, and was elected Boys State Governor in 1959. Summers attended the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland and graduated as a naval officer in 1964. In 1967 he, along with eleven other air crew members, was lost in an aviation accident while flying over the South China Sea. None were ever recovered.

LYNN HANSON SCHOLARSHIP: A scholarship will be given to a female athlete planning to attend a four-year college. Selection will be based on academic excellence, athletic excellence and character. It will be awarded to a young lady who used positive energy in academics/athletics to influence others to challenge their expectations outside of school. Further, she must be willing to encourage other young women to become successful role models.

PELTON FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship award, given by Chuck and Monica Pelton, recognizes a graduating senior at Central High School who has shown dedication and contribution to the athletic department. The recipient will have been an active member of the athletic program as an athlete, student manager or student trainer. The student must have a 2.5 cumulative grade point average and attend an institution of higher learning which includes a college, university, art institute, or vocational/technical school. Established in 2002.

SCOTT SLETTING MEMORIAL AWARD: This award is to be presented to the senior defensive football player who by his enthusiasm and positive attitude provided an inspiration to his teammates on and off the field. An exception could be made in giving this award to an offensive or special teams player when it was felt by the coaches that such an exception was warranted. Established in 1978.

STUDENT TRAINER AWARD: Presented to a student trainer(s) by Sports Medicine Institute to honor a boy and/or girl for their hard work and dedication to athletics at Central. Any student trainer is eligible.

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS DISTINGUISHED ATHLETE AWARD: Given to a senior boy or girl who is recognized as having best exhibited the personal traits of courage, poise, self-confidence and leadership while performing as a varsity athlete.

VERN JARK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: A scholarship given to a senior that competed in basketball, football, track, or baseball. The award is based on excellence in athletics, character, teamwork, leadership, and academic achievement.

WARREN E. EVANS AWARD: Given in honor of one of Central’s outstanding athletes and musicians, Warren E. Evans. It is awarded to the senior girl or boy who is the most outstanding in music and athletics. Established by the Rotary Club in 1948.

WENDY’S HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN LOCAL NOMINEE: One senior male and one senior female are nominated each year to compete in this national competition based on: academic achievement, athletic accomplishments, and community service.

COMMUNITY/FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

CHARLOTTE WILSON CLARKE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: This award goes to a senior pursuing a postsecondary degree in Family and Consumer Sciences or Education. Charlotte Wilson Clarke’s teaching career totaled 30 years in the classroom during which she taught home economics at Aberdeen Central High School for seventeen years.

C.H.S. HALL OF FAME SCHOLARSHIP: One scholarship will be awarded to a C.H.S. senior planning to attend a four- year college/university who participated in both fine arts and athletics during his/her high school years.

CLASS OF ’65 SCHOLARSHIP: This award will be given to a student excelling in one or more of the following areas: arts/music, business/law, literature/technical fields, and math/science.

DEAN KRANHOLD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is given to a CHS senior who has been active in his/her school and community.

EVELYN “EVIE” KIENOW SCHOLARSHIP: This award is given annually to a C.H.S. senior who attended Lincoln Elementary School, ranks in the top third of their class, has financial need, and plans to attend Northern State University.

JEANETTE HURRELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: This annual award goes to a C.H.S. senior planning to pursue a four-year degree in nursing. Additional criteria include: academic achievement, financial need, and school activities.

JERRY SLABY “IN PURSUIT OF A LAW CAREER” SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is given in memory of Dick Ratzlaff, CHS Class of 1960, who was a 7 year POW and a lawyer. Students receiving this award must show academic achievement and mature character, and are planning to pursue a degree in Law, with a goal of becoming a lawyer.

JOHNSEN-HERSCHLEB SCHOLARSHIP: These scholarships will be given to CHS seniors interested in the fields of business and/or fine arts. Applicants must demonstrate financial need.

KURT KRUGER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: C.H.S. seniors majoring in education with excellent character, academic excellence, and school and community service are considered for an annual award.

KYBURZ-CARLSON BUILDING/CONSTRUCTION TRADES SCHOLARSHIP: An annual scholarship will be awarded to a C.H.S. senior pursuing a degree in Building/Construction Trades.

MARLIN L. JOHNSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: This award is given annually to an active and registered member of the Aberdeen Gun Club who will be attending a university or technical school in South Dakota the following school year.

MIKE MILLER “COMMITTED TO THE COMMUNITY” SCHOLARSHIP: This award, given annually to a C.H.S. senior, was established by Mike Miller’s family and friends. Mr. Miller was an advocate for education and served on the Aberdeen School Board for 15 years.

PROFESSOR VIRGINIA L. DIXON, CLASS OF ‘63 SCHOLARSHIP: One scholarship will be given to a female C.H.S. senior with challenging family circumstances requiring her to work to help support her family or with significant care-taking duties of family members.

SANFORD HEALTH SCHOLARSHIP: C.H.S. seniors pursuing healthcare-related degrees from post-secondary schools located in North Dakota, South Dakota, or Minnesota can apply. Applicants must show determination for classroom academic achievement and provide records of involvement in school activities.

VISUAL ARTS SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship of $2,500 is designed for a C.H.S. student pursuing a degree in art, graphic design, structural or construction engineering, interior design, or architecture. The scholarship will be awarded by a committee who reviews the portfolios/career goal writing statements, transcripts and statements of personal and collegiate goals.
