In this thesis, I studied acoustic and visual signals in the Neotropical yellow toad, Incilius luetkenii, in Costa Rica. I provide the First quantitative description oF this species’ vocal behaviour, and I demonstrate that the spectral properties oF male calls are correlated with body size; thereFore, male calls may be used in size assessment. I experimentally demonstrate that chorus transmission distance is enhanced by the number oF concurrently calling toads as well as the pitch oF their calls; thereFore choruses may attract more conspeciFic animals than a lone signaller. In terms oF visual signals, I show that males respond more strongly to Female- like brown models versus male-like yellow models; thereFore colour Facilitates sex recognition. My research expands our understanding oF communication in a scramble competition mating system oF an explosively breeding anuran. iv Acknowledgements First and Foremost, I would like to thank my supervisors, Dan Mennill and Stéphanie Doucet. Through intense research in the natural environment and in captivity many important aspects of their biology and conservation can become better known. The Costa Rican Amphibian Research Center (C.R.A.R.C.) was established in 2002, and is a privately owned and operated conservational and biological research center dedicated to studying, understanding, and conserving one of the most ecologically important animal groups of Neotropical humid forest ecosystems, that of the amphibians.

This project was created to help researchers narrow the list of possible frog species quickly based on Geolocation. Using Xamarin.Forms, an app was developed that worked offline, used an ArcGIS API and was cross platform. However, to ensure performs and accuracy certain design choices were made for designing the ArcGIS map that was used within the app. The used geospatial data for the frog species and generalized it into a hexagonal pattern.

    Pseudoeurycea naucampatepetl. The Cofre de Perote salamander is endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of eastern Mexico. This relatively large salamander (reported to attain a total length of 150 mm) is recorded only from, “a narrow ridge extending east from Cofre de Perote and terminating [on] a small peak (Cerro Volcancillo) at the type locality,” in central Veracruz, at elevations from 2,500 to 3,000 m (Amphibian Species of the World website). Pseudoeurycea naucampatepetl has been assigned to the P. bellii complex of the P. bellii group (Raffaëlli 2007) and is considered most closely related to P. gigantea, a species endemic to the La specimens and has not been seen for 20 years, despite thorough surveys in 2003 and 2004 (EDGE; www.edgeofexistence.org), and thus it might be extinct. The habitat at the type locality (pine-oak forest with abundant bunch grass) lies within Lower Montane Wet Forest (Wilson and Johnson 2010; IUCN Red List website [accessed 21 April 2013]). The known specimens were “found beneath the surface of roadside banks” (www.edgeofexistence.org) along the road to Las Lajas Microwave Station, 15 kilometers (by road) south of Highway 140 from Las Vigas, Veracruz (Amphibian Species of the World website). This species is terrestrial and presumed to reproduce by direct development. Pseudoeurycea naucampatepetl is placed as number 89 in the top 100 Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered amphib- ians (EDGE; www.edgeofexistence.org). We calculated this animal’s EVS as 17, which is in the middle of the high vulnerability category (see text for explanation), and its IUCN status has been assessed as Critically Endangered.

The results show the highest amphibian species richness among Middle America lowland evergreen forests, with a notable anuran representation of 64 species.

    Other Contributions NATURE NOTES Amphibia: Anura Incilius luetkenii, Smilisca sordida, and Lithobates forreri. Predation by birds. Predation on adult anurans by tropical birds has been recorded on numerous occasions, where birds of various families (e.g., Accipitridae, Striigidae, Momotidae, Turdidae) have preyed on anurans of different families (e.g., Centrolenidae, Dendrobatidae, Hylidae, Leptodactylidae, Rhinophrynidae; Hayes, 1983; Master 1999; Toledo et al., 2007; Acosta and Morún, 2014; Ramírez-Fernández and Solís-DelValle, 2014). The majority of these events are opportunistic and associated with diet-generalist or invertebrate- and vertebrate-predator bird species (Toledo et al., 2007; Amézquita et al., 2013; Paluh et al., 2015). Here, we present information on the predation of Incilius luetkenii (Bufonidae), Smilisca sordida (Hylidae), and Lithobates forreri (Ranidae) by birds in Costa Rica. On 26 May 2013, at Área de Conservación Guanacaste, Sector Santa Rosa, Provincia de Guanacaste, Costa Rica (10°50'N, 85°37'W; WGS 84; elev. 298 m), we observed a Roadside Hawk (Buteo [Rupornis] magnirostris) feeding on an individual of Incilius luetkenii. The hawk was standing on the ground pecking and eating a dead I. luetkenii along the edge of gravel road in Tropical Dry Forest, but once it was startled flew across the road without the toad and perched on a tree approximately 5 m from the ground. We cannot determine if the hawk captured the toad or found it dead (the toad remains appeared fresh), but either of these behaviors was likely because the previous evening breeding aggregations involving I. luetkenii had occurred in the area. Although frogs and toads are import- ant dietary items for this hawk (Haverschmidt, 1972; Beltzer, 1990), this observation is the first to report I.

MENNILL 1Department of Biological Sciences, University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada ABSTRACT.—Frogs and toads exhibit complex vocal behavior, often in the context of mating and resource defense. Although over 6,500 species of frogs and toads have been described, detailed accounts of vocal behavior exist for very few species. In this study, we provide the first detailed investigation of the vocal behavior of Neotropical Yellow Toads, Incilius luetkenii, based on recordings collected from animals in northwestern Costa Rica. We provide quantitative measurements of two call types, we test the hypothesis that male body size is related to the structure of male calls, we investigate the context in which males produce calls, and we discuss the importance of their vocal behavior in the framework of an aggressive scramble competition mating system. We found that male I. luetkenii produce two vocalizations during their explosive breeding aggregations: advertisement calls and release calls. Advertisement calls are 2.5 sec-long vocalizations consisting of a series of pulses. Release calls are 0.6 sec-long vocalizations consisting of a small number of pulses and produced when other males attempt amplexus on them. As predicted, spectral properties of advertisement calls were inversely related to body size. Video analysis of male calling behavior revealed a call rate of 0.58 calls per minute and revealed that most advertisement calls occur within 2 sec following a contact with another male.

Costa Rica has long been a favorite of birders and nature lovers, and it's certainly easy to see why -- the country is stuffed full of wonderful places to visit, and fabulous encounters with wildlife are practically guaranteed. We spent two weeks ranging across the middle part of the country, from the steamy lowlands of the Caribbean slope and the dry beaches of the Pacific coast to the country's mountainous spine. And everywhere we went there were birds -- nearly 520 species by the tour's end. We had many highlights: A Collared Forest-Falcon peered from a leafy tree. A soggy Streak-breasted Treehunter sat in the rain beside its burrow nesthole. A pair of Great Green Macaws nuzzled each other in a late afternoon session of allopreening. A cloud of Fiery-throated Hummingbirds swarmed around mountain feeders. A pair of Resplendent Quetzals (and there's an appropriate name, if ever there was one) ferried mouthfuls to a nest of unseen youngsters. A stockstill Slaty-breasted Tinamou whistled beside a rainforest trail. A family of Spotted Wood-Quails scrabbled for tasty morsels in the leaf litter. Big flocks of Tawny-crested Tanagers swirled through the underbrush at Braulio Carrillo.
