Live in New York Gloºl Ora

The DiMenna Center n for Classical rtMusic, New York Tuesday 30 June 2015 The Global Orchestra in concert

Welcome

At Nord Anglia Education, we are ambitious for our students – we believe there is no limit to what they can achieve. It’s why we are committed to creating unique experiences which spark their creativity and challenge them to achieve more than they imagined.

The Global Orchestra is one of these unique global opportunities that we value so highly and that we think make such a huge impact on the students involved. The Global Orchestra is bringing together outstanding young musicians from our schools around the world to rehearse and perform a wide range of music. But more than that... it is giving some of our most talented musicians the chance to get a taste of what it would be like to reach the pinnacle – to visit and study at a world leading performing arts conservatory, The Juilliard School.

Our commitment to the performing arts means that our students have the chance to develop their skills and expand their horizons in the cultural hub of New York. They will learn from each other and from experts in the field of music, and will gain the confidence to begin to realise their own ambitions. However, this is just the start of Nord Anglia’s ambition for them…because in September this year we will be starting to introduce the Juilliard-Nord Anglia performing arts curriculum. This programme is specially designed in collaboration with The Juilliard School to impact the lives of every one of our students, not just those who are fortunate enough to take part in this wonderful global experience.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy this concert. Celebrate our students’ achievements here but also remember that this is just the beginning of our commitment to be ambitious for every student in all of our schools across the world… all 23,700 of them.

Mark Orrow-Whiting Director of Curriculum and Student Performance 2 3 The Global Orchestra in concert

The Nord Anglia Global Orchestra This year, Nord Anglia Education offered the opportunity for talented musicians from our family of schools to be part of our first ever Global Orchestra. Back in March, auditions were open for over 20,000 students across 31 Nord Anglia Schools, in 13 countries. Those students were auditioning for the chance to be in this ensemble and perform here tonight in New York.

Each school held their own auditions and the top performers were then invited to share a recorded audition with a global judging panel. The judges then selected up to three young musicians from each school to create a truly international collective of 46 instrumentalists and 34 singers. The Nord Anglia Global Orchestra is made up of students who are not only outstanding musicians but are ambassadors for our family of schools, and the students should be very proud of themselves.

This week students have participated in inspiring workshops and rehearsals guided by experts. The Juilliard School kindly designed an exciting programme of workshops to give students a taste of the three disciplines they teach – music, dance and drama. The children have watched performances by elite artists and have been immersed in the city’s arts culture. This week-long residential programme has been thrilling for all.

Nord Anglia Education believes in providing its students with unrivalled opportunities to explore their ambitions and develop into confident, successful young people. The Global Orchestra has allowed young musicians from around the world to learn from each other, to perform together and to build their creativity and confidence as performers and global citizens. Performing arts are an integral part of our schools, helping to spark curiosity and develop our students’ communication and collaboration skills.

As well as exposing students to a wide range of musical experiences, the Global Orchestra summer school here in New York also cultivates open-mindedness as they embrace this vibrant and cultural city and build friendships with peers from around the world. We hope you enjoy the performances from The Nord Anglia Global Orchestra tonight, and thank you for joining us on this very special evening.

Year 13, The British School Warsaw Year 11, British School of Chicago

My aspiration to pursue a career as a violinist has directed my extra-curricular activities since I joined a first degree Music School in Warsaw. Having spent over seven years there, today I understand that one can achieve wonderful results by regular practice and hard work. Playing violin was Overture never an easy task because it required me to practice every day to keep refreshing my fingers’ memory. I inherited this passion from my mother This piece is light-hearted, yet still carries emotional depth. In writing it, I set out to explore the depths of the tonal world and portray some of the who is a violinist as well. During my childhood years, I adored listening to her playing and that developed my sheer interest and a respect for mystery that is intertwined with freedom. As with most of my music, it is not programmatic, that is, it does not tell a story. Thus, the story must be this instrument. found within the listener – it evolves over time and from person to person.

I have played violin for 12 years now and I attend violin classes every week. I also take Music as one of my Higher Level IB subjects, in which my The piece is titled Overture largely due to the ambiguity in that title. While the word Overture typically refers to an introduction to something (or performance on violin is a part. Throughout those years, I have participated in numerous bands and orchestras, which taught me the importance sometimes, a programmatic work), by using it here, I suggest that the piece is not self-contained, but is rather a window into a certain world. The of every musician not only knowing their part but also being able to adapt their playing to the other performers. At the same time I have played story of the music must be created by the listener, producing a rich experience. outside of orchestras as a solo player, which I have always found exciting.

Participating in this amazing experience will not only complete my dreams of visiting The Juilliard School and the USA, but will allow me to play in the orchestra with people who share the same passion for music. By attending the workshops, I will gain invaluable music skills, which will have a real impact on my future career. This trip is going to be an unforgettable experience and an opportunity that will allow me to be a principal violinist in such an amazing orchestra.
