René Bonzet n late 2012 Northlink College received a visit from the City of Cape Town Mayor, IAlderman Dan Plato, and Gideon Morris, Chief Director Secretariat for Safety and Security, to discuss a partnership. The partnership had been piloted for a few months earlier with the Provincial Department of Community Safety and Security. Alderman Dan Plato sees in the initiative the opportunity to target unemployed youth in various poverty-stricken areas of the City and Province.

The object of the partnership is to work with representatives of the City to make Youth at Risk, in the poverty stricken areas, aware of the life-changing opportunities that Northlink College and sister public FET colleges can provide. Damian September, a Northlink College Student Recruitment officer, reported that considerable progress had already been made: ‘It is an eye-opener to see how the youth respond when given real positive alternative options to their current lifestyles. They are hungry for a change, but generally have no financial resources to pursue these changes.’ André du Toit, Fleet Manager of Peninsula Beverage, handing over the keys of the forklift to Mr Kirk Randall, Northlink College Bellville Campus Manager. In addition, the National Skills Fund has made a generous allocation to public FET colleges to provide support of vacant public buildings in the Western Cape. As a result of the partnership, which for additional numbers of students, specifically those that have an interest in skills commenced as a pilot project last August, Damian September has visited areas such development programmes that lead to qualifications. How did Boland College achieve this? The establishment of ‘internal audit and risk management systems which are not inferior to the standards contained in the Public Finance Management Act’ is legislated by our FET Act.
