Energy & Power Industry Update February 2012 Member FINRA/SIPC www.harriswilliams.com Energy & Power Industry Update February 2012 What We’ve Been Reading • Despite a warm embrace of the natural gas industry from President Obama in his 2012 State of the Union Address, January has been a tough month for fuel. An unusually mild winter has dampened demand, sent prices to new lows, and accelerated rig count shifts towards liquids-rich plays. Most notably, Chesapeake Energy, self-proclaimed as “America’s Champion of Natural Gas,” announced that it would divert approximately $2 billion of capital slated for natural gas drilling to more profitable oil-directed drilling. The net effect on North American drilling activity from this shift is expected to be minimal. In fact, many of the oilfield services majors offered bullish commentary on North American activity despite some pricing headwinds in dry gas basins. We’ve included some of that commentary on the following pages for reference. • While natural gas may be encountering some near-term hurdles, the long-term view is certainly positive. This is made particularly clear in Black & Veatch’s (“B&V”) Energy Market Perspective 2011 Fall Forecast Overview: Adapting to the “New Normal,” which deserves mention for the length of its title alone. The report notes that approximately 300,000 MW of natural gas capacity could be added over the next 25 years. Part of this growth is due to the fact that more than 61,500 MW of coal capacity in the continental U.S. may be retired by 2020 (28,000 MW of coal plant retirements have already been announced). -

FORUM FOR INTER-AMERICAN RESEARCH (FIAR) VOL. 11.2 (SEP. 2018) 30-43 ISSN: 1867-1519 © forum for inter-american research “In a world without gold, we might have been heroes!” Cultural Imaginations of Piracy in Video Games EUGEN PFISTER (HOCHSCHULE DER KÜNSTE BERN) Abstract From its beginning, colonialism had to be legitimized in Western Europe through cultural and political narratives and imagery, for example in early modern travel reports and engravings. Images and tales of the exotic Caribbean, of beautiful but dangerous „natives“, of unbelievable fortunes and adventures inspired numerous generations of young men to leave for the „new worlds“ and those left behind to support the project. An interesting figure in this set of imaginations in North- Western Europe was the “pirate”: poems, plays, novels and illustrations of dashing young rogues, helping their nation to claim their rightful share of the „Seven Seas“ achieved major successes in France, Britain the Netherlands and beyond. These images – regardless of how far they might have been from their historical inspiration – were immensely successful and are still an integral and popular part of our narrative repertoire: from novels to movies to video games. It is important to note that the “story” was – from the 18th century onwards –almost always the same: a young (often aristocratic) man, unfairly convicted for a crime he didn’t commit became an hors-la-loi against his will but still adhered to his own strict code of conduct and honour. By rescuing a city/ colony/princess he redeemed himself and could be reintegrated into society. Here lies the morale of the story: these imaginations functioned also as acts of political communication, teaching “social discipline”. -

Abstract We Analyze the Careers of Esports Professional Players

Harmon University of Texas at Arlington Economics [email protected] Abstract We analyze the careers of Esports professional players. The Esport industry has been able to monetize growing spectator demand to offer tournament prize money amounting to $113 million in 2017. A few hundred players, out of tens of thousands, earn enough to remain professional gamers exclusively. We examine three aspects of professional Esport player careers. First, a ?superstar’ effect leads to increases in the top prizes drawing amateurs into the professional ranks. Next, while age and experience affect player performance, player ability remains difficult to assess. Finally, career exits reflect a quick resolution regarding the uncertainty in player ability. Preliminary - Please do not quote ESport Superstars I. Introduction Esports refers to competitive video gaming at the professional level. Esports emulates traditional sports with player endorsements and sponsorships, spectators packing into arenas for tournaments, lucrative broadcasting deals, and recruiting from the college ranks. What had started as friendly competition and socialization events just over two decades ago, currently has a 226 million viewer global audience generating $696 million in revenue that is expected to reach nearly $1.5 billion USD by 2020.1 Total prize money across all games played totaled $113 million in 2017, with top earner Kuro Takhasomi (aka KuroKy) grossing $2.44 million. However, payouts are heavily skewed with a median annual earnings of less than $1,000.2 The size and skewness in earnings suggest a market for superstar talent (Rosen, 1981). -
