“JUST AS THE PRIESTS HAVE THEIR WIVES”: PRIESTS AND CONCUBINES IN ENGLAND, 1375-1549 Janelle Werner A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History. Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by: Advisor: Professor Judith M. Bennett Reader: Professor Stanley Chojnacki Reader: Professor Barbara J. Harris Reader: Cynthia B. Herrup Reader: Brett Whalen © 2009 Janelle Werner ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT JANELLE WERNER: “Just As the Priests Have Their Wives”: Priests and Concubines in England, 1375-1549 (Under the direction of Judith M. Bennett) This project – the first in-depth analysis of clerical concubinage in medieval England – examines cultural perceptions of clerical sexual misbehavior as well as the lived experiences of priests, concubines, and their children. Although much has been written on the imposition of priestly celibacy during the Gregorian Reform and on its rejection during the Reformation, the history of clerical concubinage between these two watersheds has remained largely unstudied. My analysis is based primarily on archival records from Hereford, a diocese in the West Midlands that incorporated both English- and Welsh-speaking parishes and combines the quantitative analysis of documentary evidence with a close reading of pastoral and popular literature. Drawing on an episcopal visitation from 1397, the act books of the consistory court, and bishops’ registers, I argue that clerical concubinage occurred as frequently in England as elsewhere in late medieval Europe and that priests and their concubines were, to some extent, socially and culturally accepted in late medieval England.

  • Buildings Open to View
6-9 September 2018 13-16 September 2018 BUILDINGS BUILDINGSOPEN TO OPENVIEW TO VIEW 0 2 Welcome to Heritage Open Days 2018 Heritage Open days celebrates our architecture and culture by allowing FREE access to interesting properties, many of which are not normally open to the public, as well as free tours, events, and other activities. It is organised by a partnership of Chester Civic Trust and Cheshire West and Chester Council, in association with other local societies. It would not be possible without the help of many building owners and local volunteers. Maps are available from Chester Visitor Information Centre and Northwich Information Centre. For the first time in the history of Heritage Open Days the event will take place nationally across two weekends in September the 6-9 and the 13-16. Our local Heritage Open Days team decided that to give everyone the opportunity to fully explore and discover the whole Cheshire West area Chester buildings would open on 6-9 September and Ellesmere Port & Mid Cheshire would open on 13-16 September. Some buildings/ events/tours were unable to do this and have opened their buildings on the other weekend so please check dates thoroughly to avoid disappointment. Events – Tours, Talks & Activities Booking is ESSENTIAL for the majority of HODs events as they have limited places. Please check booking procedures for each individual event you would like to attend. Children MUST be accompanied by adults. Join us If you share our interest in the heritage and future development of Chester we invite you to join Chester Civic Trust.

  • The Cult of St Æthelwold and Its Context, C. 984 - C
The Cult of St Æthelwold and its Context, c. 984 - c. 1400 Rebecca Browett Institute of Historical Research School of Advanced Study, University of London A Thesis Submitted for the Degree of Ph.D in History September 2016 1 Declaration This thesis is submitted to the University of London in support of my application for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. I, Rebecca Browett, hereby confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own, carried out during the course of my studies. The copyright of this thesis rests with the author. Quotation from it is permitted, provided that full acknowledgement is made. This thesis may not be reproduced without the consent of the author. Signed: Date: 2 Abstract This thesis documents the cult of St Æthelwold, a tenth-century bishop of Winchester, from its inception (c. 984) until the late Middle Ages. During his life, Æthelwold was an authoritative figure who reformed monasteries in southern England. Those communities subsequently venerated him as a saint and this thesis examines his cult at those centres. In particular, it studies how his cult enabled monasteries to forge their identities and to protect their rights from avaricious bishops. It analyses the changing levels of veneration accorded to Æthelwold over a five hundred year period and compares this with other well-known saints’ cults. It uses diverse evidence from hagiographies, chronicles, chartularies, poems, church dedications, wall paintings, and architecture. Very few studies have attempted to chart the development of an early English saint's cult over such a long time period, and my multidisciplinary approach, using history, art, and literary studies, offers insight into the changing role of native saints in the English church and society over the course of the Middle Ages.

  • 2011 Wirral Conference
2011 BSMGP CONFERENCE: THE W IRRAL brother of H J Salisbury, who is better known as a portrait painter and whose biggest window is at Wesley’s Chapel, London. Another is by Henry Gustave Hiller, who was born in Manchester and was apprenticed to a draper there before starting his own firm in Liverpool. Finally, in the NW corner is a small window by Trena Cox, the first of many on this tour (detail right). On then to Liverpool Cathedral; we began in the Lady Chapel where Peter Cormack drew attention to the decorative detail: the wood carving and altarpiece by Walter Gilbert (who cofounded the Bromsgrove Guild) and stone carvings and metalwork by E. Carter Preston, designer of the ’dead man’s penny’ (a medallion given to families of soldiers killed in WWI) and the armature for the glass. Peter also pointed out that Scott had developed his own version of ‘Gothic’: not Gothic Revival but a living interpretation of the medieval, as in the US ‘modern Gothic’ he fine start to September’s weather this year bode well for (Princeton Chapel being a reduced version of this church). Our Tan enjoyable trip cross country to the Roman city of Chester attention was also drawn to the use of ‘Minerva glass’ – the for the autumn gathering. That evening we sat down in the juxtaposition of blues and picks to create an opalescent effect – lecture to hear Wirral native Tony Benyon’s opening talk on the as well as the influence on Hogan’s style of Christopher Whall. glazing history of Liverpool Anglican cathedral, the largest and His linear painting style also proved faster to execute than much- the last ‘Gothic’ cathedral in the UK.

  • A Brief History of Christ Church Crowton
A Brief History of Christ Church Crowton. Christ Church is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Frodsham, the archdeaconry of Chester, and the diocese of Chester. Its benefice is combined with those of St John the Evangelist, Kingsley, and St John the Evangelist, Norley. The lovely Grade I I listed Church which was built on the highest point of the village was designed in the Gothic Revival style by Sir John Loughborough Pearson RA., FSA. It is constructed in red sandstone, with a red tiled roof. Its architectural style is that of the 13th century. The plan consists of a four-bay nave and a two-bay chancel in one range, a transept and a vestry on the north side, a south porch, and a two-tier double bellcote at the west end. The buttresses include a massive stepped buttress on the south side at the division of the nave and the chancel. The windows in the nave have two lights, and those in the chancel have three lights. Inside the church, the nave is divided from the chancel by a low wall and a double chamfered arch. Sir John Pearson designed many new churches during his career, ranging from small country churches to major churches in cities. Among the latter, St Augustine's Church in Kilburn, London, "may claim to be his masterpiece". Towards the end of his career he designed two new cathedrals, at Truro in Cornwall, and Brisbane in Australia. The church was consecrated on the 2nd November 1871 by William, Bishop of Chester.
