459 BRIEF STUDIES and REPORTS The Perry George Lowery / Scott Joplin Connection: New Information on an Important African American Cornetist Richard I. Schwartz The author of this article has previously discussed the life and career of Perry George Lowery (1869-1942) in the Historic Brass Society .f ournal (vol. 12 [2002] : 61-88). The present article is designed to provide supplementary information about his circus career and his surprising professional association with Scott Joplin (1868-1919). It has become apparent to this author that a relationship of strong mutual respect and friendship developed between Perry George Lowery and Scott Joplin during the early twentieth century. P.G. Lowery was renowned for his abilities not only as a cornetist, but also as a conductor ofmany brass bands, consisting of the best African American band musicians in the entertainment world.' Scott Joplin's achievements are many and have been researched extensively by several authors.' One of the few articles in The Indianapolis Freeman3 documenting a friendship between Lowery and Joplin states that "P.G. Lowery, assistant manager of Swain's Nashville Students was the special guest of Scott Joplin, the ragtime king and author of the following hits: `Maple Leaf Rag,' 'Easy Winner,' Peacherine Rag,' 'Sun-flower Slowdrag,' and 'A Blizzard'." Much has been written about all of these compositions with the exception of the last one: no piece entitled A Blizzard has survived and according to Edward A. Re/Defining the Imaginary Museum of National Music The Case of Croatia Zdravko Blažekovic´ The historian is a product of history himself, and of his situation. However hard we may try, he cannot escape the molding of his mind by his experience and his surroundings.1 Music historiography in Croatia was throughout the twentieth century marked by the path established in the late nineteenth century by Franjo Ksaver Kuhač (1834-1911), who defined the criteria for inclusion of musicians into the national canon on the basis of their Croatian ethnic origin rather than presenting cultural circles in which they were active. In the twentieth century, the central influence on the definition of the canon of Croatian music history came from Josip Andreis (1909-1982) in his historical survey published in three Croatian editions (Razvoj muzičke umjetnosti u Hrvatskoj [The development of musical arts in Croatia], 1962; Povijest hrvatske glazbe [History of Croatian music], 1974, 1989) and two English editions (Music in Croatia 1974, 1982). Synthesizing the existing views about Croatian music, he constructed in his narrative a museum of Croatian and foreign com- posers active in Croatia, as well as composers born in Croatia but living abroad. Besides nationalistic traits inherited from Kuhač, a reason for emphasizing activities of composers working abroad were the political and cultural circumstances surrounding Andreis during the time of communist Yugoslavia, when Croatian connections with the Central European musical space were particularly appreciated, especially when the quality of composers living abroad surpassed the musical production within the country. Being a part of multina- tional Yugoslavia situated between the Eastern and Western cultural and religious spheres, Croatians at the time wanted to distance themselves from the cultures in Eastern Europe and felt the need to be reassured about their belonging to Slavia Latina. -
Milko Kelemen: Life and Selected Works for Violoncello
MILKO KELEMEN: LIFE AND SELECTED WORKS FOR VIOLONCELLO by JOSIP PETRAČ (Under the Direction of David Starkweather) ABSTRACT Milko Kelemen (b. 1924) is one of the most extraordinary Croatian composers of the post-World War II era. He has received numerous prestigious awards for his work, while his compositions are published by major companies, including Schott, Universal, Peters, and Hans Sikorski editions. His music is little studied or known internationally. This paper examines this innovative, avant-garde musician and sheds light both on Kelemen’s life and his compositional technique. The latter is examined in four compositions featuring cello as the main subject: Changeant (1968), Drammatico (1983), Requiem for Sarajevo (1994), and Musica Amorosa (2004). The examination of these compositions is placed in a biographical context which reveals how Kelemen’s keen political and cultural interests influenced his development as a composer. In particular, this document looks at Kelemen’s role as one of the founders, and the first president, of the Zagreb Music Biennale Festival, an event known for its ground-breaking work in bringing together artists and composers from the eastern and western blocs during the Cold War, as well as revitalising Croatia’s old-fashioned and provincial cultural scene. This festival of avant-garde music has been running since 1961. The Mousmé and the Cultural Mobility of Musical Comedy
6 Henry Balme Yale University, USA Between Modernism and Japonism: The Mousmé and the cultural mobility of musical comedy Edwardian musical comedy had been sidelined in music and theatre histories due to its conservative design and frivolous narratives, but it is now being critically reassessed for the role it played in the creation of a first globalised network of theatre. The Mousmé is a work that exemplifies the process of performative re- contextualisation that accompanied musical comedies as they travelled from London’s West End across the world, as far as Yokohama and Tokyo. The work appealed to British audiences because it was held to be a realistic reconstruction of Japanese culture and society, but it was also enjoyed by Japanese audiences, despite its stereotypical portrayal of their people. This apparent dichotomy is explored in this essay, which presents little-known documents surrounding the production and its travels. It sheds light on how musical theatre became culturally mobile during the first age of globalisation. For a long time the genre had been considered an obscure part of musical theatre history and thus demoted to the sidelines of musicology and theatre studies.2 It is now being critically re-assessed for the importance it played in the globalisation of theatre during the first fifteen years of the twentieth century: musical comedy became a medium of extraordinary mobility, transmitted via the transnational travel and communication networks that had been put into place during the nineteenth century. -

Weait School of Music ABSTRACT During the antebellum period, the town of Mount Vernon, Ohio had a flourishing music scene that included performances by both local amateur societies and professional touring groups. When Woodward Hall, located on the top floor of a four-story commercial building, opened its doors to the public in 1851, it provided the town with its first dedicated theater. Newspaper items and other early sources show that the hall was a focus of public culture in the 1850s, hosting concerts, plays, lectures, and art exhibits as well as community activities including dances, church fundraisers, and school exhibitions. The early source materials for Mount Vernon, however, like those for many small towns, are lacunary, and especially so in the case of Woodward Hall. These shortcomings are compensated, to some extent, by materials relating to theaters of similar size and age in other towns, which offer points of comparison for the Woodward and prove it to be a typical mid-nineteenth-century American theater in some respects, and a distinctive one in others. Modern-day music histories have heretofore been silent on the subject of music and opera houses in small towns despite Oscar Sonneck’s call, some ninety years ago, for local music historiography as a necessary first step in creating a complete history of American music. -

As the Croatian lands were exposed to often aggressive Austrian, Hungarian and Italian politics until World War I and in some regions even later,1 Croatian music criticism was written in Croatian, German and Italian. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, Croatian was mainly the language of the lower classes. In 1843 the nobleman Ivan Kukuljević- -Sakcinski was the first to speak Croatian instead of Latin in the Croatian Parlia- ment. Yet Croatian only became the official language in 1847. To the best of our knowledge, the first ever piece of Croatian music criticism was written in 1826, in the literary and entertainment journal Luna, by an anonym- ous author writing in German.2 The musicologist Lovro Županović attributes that review to Franjo Ksaver (Serafin) Stauduar (b. 1825 or 1826; d. 1864), who was the newspaper’s publisher and editor. The question, however, remains as to what extent this report- ed scepticism truly reflects people’s opinions and feelings about Europe. We all consider it normal to cross borders within Europe, often while using the same money, as well as to take part in exchange programmes, invest in enterprises across Europe and appeal to European institutions if national regulations, for example, do not meet our expectations. -
