Tuesday, July 23, 1991 STEINBECK LECTURE 8:00p.m. RoomB

Susan Shillinglaw The Valley, the Mountains, the Sea: John Steinbeck's California

Biography in Brief

John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, in 1902. He left Salinas in 1919 to attend Stanford University, where he took courses in writing, literature, biology, and philosophy, but never completed a degree. In 1930 he and his first wife settled in Pacific Grove where, in 1935, he published his first successful novel, Tortilla Flat. In the 1940s Steinbeck, who saw each new book as an "experience," turned increasingly to other genres-film, journalism, theater-and to other fields of study, most notably marine biology and, later in his career, the Arthurian myths. All the while, however, he continued to produce novels of great stature. Steinbeck is recognized as one of America's foremost twentieth- century writers. He wrote about commonplace Americans trying to achieve dignity in a culture that denied them a voice, using California and the promise it held out to so many as the backdrop against which his actors played. Steinbeck is thus very much a California writer, and a western vision informs his greatest novels-The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, Cannery Row, and East of Eden. He won the Nobel prize for literature for The Winter of Our Discontent in 1962. Steinbeck remarried twice and spent the latter part of his life in New York City and on Long Island. He died in 1968. 20
