The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release March 1987 DRAWINGS ACQUISITIONS Through May 26, 1987 A new installation at The Museum of Modern Art features seventy-one works on paper acquired since 1981. During this period, 554 works by 217 artists entered the collection. Organized by John Elderfield, director of the Department of Drawings, the current installation reveals the rich growth of the collection over the past six years. Among the highlights of early modern drawings in the installation are Piet Mondrian's Amstel River (1907), a large, dramatic, preabstract work that combines a Symbolist mood with an already strong sense of geometric structure, and Giorgio de Chirico's Solitude (1917), widely considered to be probably the greatest of his metaphysical drawings. Three recently acquired works on paper by Pablo Picasso include the monumental Two Nudes (1906), a study for the Museum's painting of that subject; the rigorously abstract, Cubist Guitar (1912); and the beautiful pastel, Woman in a Flowered Hat (1921). Other major Cubist works include Fernand Leger's Contrast of Forms (1912) and Juan Gris's collage, Glass and Bottle (1913), and two drawings by sculptor Julio Gonzalez. The Museum's representation of Futurism has been enhanced by the addition of Carlo Carra's charcoal drawing, Cafe Chantant (1912), and works by Giacomo Balla and F.T. Marinetti (the latter represented in the collection for the first time). Early British modernism is exemplified by David Bomberg's early abstraction, study for In the Hold (1913), and works by William Roberts and C.R.W. Nevinson (first time representation). -
Gregory Amenoff | Biography
Gregory Amenoff | Biography Gregory Amenoff (b. 1948) is a painter who lives in New York and New Mexico. He is the recipient of numerous awards from organizations including the American Academy of Arts and Letters, National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts and Tiffany Foundation. He has had over fifty one-person exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout the United States and Europe. His work is in the permanent collections of more than thirty museums, including the Whitney Museum of America Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He served as President of the National Academy of Design from 2001-2005. He serves on the Board of Directors of the CUE Art Foundation and as the Foundation Curator Governor. Amenoff has taught at Columbia for the last fifteen years, where he held the Eve and Herman Gelman Chair of Visual Arts until 2013. CHARLES ARNOLDI (B
CHARLES ARNOLDI (b. 1946) Born in Dayton, Ohio, Charles Arnoldi is an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker. After moving to California at 18, Arnoldi was urged to enroll in art school by employers who recognized his creative talent. He briefly attended Ventura College as well as the Art Center in Los Angeles, where he took issue with the rigidity of educational institutions. He dropped out of the Art Center and instead decided to hone his skills through his own practice. Many of his early pieces incorporate different forms of wood, including branches and sticks. His style evolved throughout the 1980s to include vibrant paintings on canvas as well as more colorful manifestations of his wood pieces. The result was works of art that are undeniably natural yet could never occur in nature. Shapes, color and proportions are motifs Arnoldi has been addressing during his decades-long career, drawing from architectural elements or forms seen in nature for inspiration. Arnoldi’s geometric abstractions are colorful balances of rigid grids containing gestural arcs, some disrupted by non-uniform shapes of the canvas. He paints on individual panels and later assembles them, at times leaving them un-aligned and making way for gaps and irregular edges. The nature of the hard-edged geometric compositions becomes more apparent with the play between the foreground and background and their spatial relationshps. Arnoldi has had a distinguished career and his work is extensively collected in private, corporate and public collections. EDUCATION 1968 Chouinard -

Selections A-D 77 Group events and clippings by title 109 Group events without title / Organizations 129 Periodicals 149 Introduction In the context of my activity as an antiquarian bookseller I began in 1973 to acquire exhibition invitations/announcements and poster/mailers on painting, sculpture, drawing and prints, performance, and video. I was motivated by the quasi-neglect in which these ephemeral primary sources in art history were held by American commercial channels, and the project to create a database towards the bibliographic recording of largely ignored material. Documentary value and thinness were my only criteria of inclusion. Sources of material were random. Material was acquired as funds could be diverted from my bookshop. With the rapid increase in number and diversity of sources, my initial concept evolved from a documentary to a study archive project on international visual and performing arts, reflecting the appearance of new media and art making/producing practices, globalization, the blurring of lines between high and low, and the challenges to originality and quality as authoritative criteria of classification and appreciation. In addition to painting, sculpture, drawing and prints, performance and video, the Jean-Noël Herlin Archive Project includes material on architecture, design, caricature, comics, animation, mail art, music, dance, theater, photography, film, textiles and the arts of fire. It also contains material on galleries, collectors, museums, foundations, alternative spaces, and clubs. -
