As an alternative to shrimp extractive activities, the authors evaluated the rearing of these species in a recirculation culture system. For each species, the grow-out study was carried out in two 120-day production cycles, using 3,300 juveniles of an average length of 25 mm and weight of 0.9 grams in each, distributed in 12 tanks of 1,500 liters and 1.32 m2, at a population density of 208.3 shrimp per m2. The growth parameters were obtained using the von Bertalanffy model based on the length (mm) and age (weeks) data. The adjustments were made in the R environment of the non-linear least-square method. The von Bertalanffy growth model showed a proper fit, with determination coefficients of 0.900 for L. schmitti and 0.841 for F. paulensis. The values of L∞ and k were 172.66 and 0.027 mm for L. schmitti and 110.13 mm and 0.050 for F. -

WASH. 90(1), pp. 172-18i PENAEOPSIS EDUARDOI, A NEW SPECIES OF SHRIMP (CRUSTACEA: PENAEIDAE) FROM THE INDO-WEST PACIFIC Isabel Perez Farfante During a revision of the genus Penaeopsis, I discovered that a very distinct Indo-West Pacific species had not been recognized previously, representa- tives having been repeatedly assigned to 2 other species, both named by Bate in 1881. As indicated in the list of material examined, my conclusions are based on a study of the Penaeopsis collected during the voyage of the Challenger, 1873-76 and identified by Bate, including the types of his species, "Penaeus rectacutus" and "P. serratus." Also examined were 6 specimens described by de Man, and the relatively large collection of Penaeopsis taken by the U.S. steamer Albatross during the Philippine Expedition, 1907-1909, which includes representatives of 3 of the 4 species found in the Indo-West Pacific. The method of measuring specimens and the terminology used below are described by Perez Farfante (1969). The scales accompanying the illustrations are in millimeters. The materials used are in the collections of the British Museum (Natural History) (BMNH), National Museum of Natural History (USNM), and the Zoological Museum, Amsterdam (ZMA). Abstract The assessment of Penaeidae species diversity in a particular region is very important in formulating conservation strategies. In the present study, the survey on diversity of Penaeidae species in south east coast of India has been assessed on the basis of landing of variety of species in this group. Penaeidae species were collected from various main landing centers of south east coast of India for three years. Identification and nomenclature was done based on previously published literature. Among the 59 species observed, the Penaeus semisulcatus, Penaeus monodon and Fenneropenaeus indicus were found mostly in all landing centers. -

Commercial fisheries are expanding their activities into deeper water. The life history features of these deep-water resources make them more vulnerable to exploitation than most shallow-water resources. This scenario has caused great concern regarding the sustainability of these resources and the possible environmental impacts on the deep-sea ecosystem. In Latin America, commercial fisheries are going deep as well, and considering the above-mentioned concerns, we felt the need to compile the available information about the deep-water shrimp resources and the current status of their fisheries in Latin America. Focusing on Mexico, Central America, Peru, Chile and Brazil, this review describes the exploited species, and, whenever available, the fishing fleet, fishery statistics, and management strategies. -

The West Atlantic species was first noted off Damietta, on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, in 2012. The impacts of the introduction of P. aztecus on the local biota, and in particular on the native and previously introduced penaeids, are as yet unknown. Shrimp farmers at the northern Nile Delta have been cultivating P. aztecus since 2016, depending on postlarvae and juveniles collected from the wild in the Damietta branch of the Nile estuary. In this study we used simulations and controlled matings to examine the potential of microsatellite markers in assigning parentage to Kuruma shrimp (Penaeus japonicus) progeny. Simulations based on allele frequency data from a captive population of P. japonicus demonstrated that at least five loci would be required to assign progeny to their correct maternal parent (with 95% confidence) when drawn from a breeding population of 30 dams and 150 putative sires. Based on this information, nauplii from 22 matings where maternal parents were known were typed at six microsatellite loci and subjected to parentage analysis. Assignment success of progeny to their ‘‘true’’ mother was lower than predicted by the simulations, with only 47% of progeny assigned correctly. Null alleles and allelic dropout resulting from poor quality DNA contributed to this disparity. The benefits of DNA parentage analysis as a tool to retain pedigree information in shrimp selective breeding programs are discussed.
