The album debuted on the Billboard 200 at # 1, having sold 557,789 units in its first week. Originally a compilation album for Roc-A-Fella Records, the album was also a showcase for Roc-A-Fella artists such as Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel, Amil and Freeway, which eventually became another Jay Z solo album (or at least marketed as one to increase sales), even though the Roc- A-Fella artists are abundant on this record. Big name guest appearances were limited to three to make room for the Roc-A-Fella family-Snoop Dogg, R. Kelly, and Scarface. Rather than use big-name producers like Swizz Beatz and Timbaland, who had made a notable presence on Vol. 2 Next Vol. 3, At the time of this release, Jay Z had planned to incorporate more up-and - coming artists including Just Blaze, Kanye West and Bink! Such companies will enjoy considerable success in the future, in part as a result of this publicity. Also this was Jay Z's first album not to feature longtime producer DJ Premier 's work. Despite the propensity of Just Blaze and Kanye West to include soul samples in their music, the album contains a finer sound than Jay Z 's previous endeavors, while Bay Area rapper Rick Rock uses a more minimalistic sound in his four creations. Based in the California Bay Area and aligned closely with E-40, Rock began earning major credits in 1996, when he contributed tracks to both 2Pac's All Eyez on Me and 40's Hall of Game. In the years to follow, he cranked out productions mainly for West Coast rappers like Keak da Sneak, Spice 1, and Xzibit. However, he also worked with mainstream artists like Will Smith, Fabolous, and Method Man. He eventually signed a contract with Virgin Records to present a group RICK ROCK of his own, Federation. The group debuted in 2003, releasing the single "Hyphy," whose title would soon become the common stylistic tag for Bay Area rap of the E-40 variety. MICHAEL DENTEN has been a fixture on the music scene for nearly three decades as a musician, record producer, recording engineer, mixer, mastering engineer and conductor. In his recording studio, Infinite Studios, Alameda CA, Michael has mixed, recorded, produced, and mastered records for such notables as the, the Whispers, Bobby Brown, The Fray, The Killers, Irene Cara, MC Hammer, E-40, Rick Rock, Walter Hawkins, Tony! Tone!, En Vouge, Backstreet Boys, Zakir Hussian, Sikiru, Giovanni Hidalgo, 2 Pac, Luniz, Spice 1, Digital Underground, Braxton Brothers, Patti Austin, San Quinn, Too Short, The Team, The Jacka and countless other artist and musicians.

FLORIDA A&M UNIVERSITY, 1994 M.A. CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY, 1998 THE IDEOLOGICAL AND NARRATIVE STRUCTURES OF HIP-HOP MUSIC: A STUDY OF SELECTED HIP-HOP ARTISTS Advisor: Dr. Viktor Osinubi Dissertation Dated May 2009 This study examined the discourse of selected Hip-Hop artists and the biographical aspects of the works. The study was based on the structuralist theory of Roland Barthes which claims that many times a performer’s life experiences with class struggle are directly reflected in his artistic works. Since rap music is a counter-culture invention which was started by minorities in the South Bronx borough ofNew York over dissatisfaction with their community, it is a cultural phenomenon that fits into the category of economic and political class struggle. The study recorded and interpreted the lyrics of New York artists Shawn Carter (Jay Z), Nasir Jones (Nas), and southern artists Clifford Harris II (T.I.) and Wesley Weston (Lii’ Flip). The artists were selected on the basis of geographical spread and diversity. Although Hip-Hop was again founded in New York City, it has now spread to other parts of the United States and worldwide. The study investigated the biography of the artists to illuminate their struggles with poverty, family dysfunction, aggression, and intimidation. 1 The artists were found to engage in lyrical battles; therefore, their competitive discourses were analyzed in specific Hip-Hop selections to investigate their claims of authorship, imitation, and authenticity, including their use of sexual discourse and artistic rivalry, to gain competitive advantage.
