SPRING 2018 UNDERGRADUATE LAW JOURNAL The Final Frontier: Evolution of Space Law in a Global Society By: Garett Faulkender and Stephan Schneider Introduction “Space: the final frontier!” These are the famous introductory words spoken by William Shatner on every episode of Star Trek. This science-fiction TV show has gained a cult-following with its premise as a futuristic Space odyssey. Originally released in 1966, many saw the portrayed future filled with Space-travel, inter-planetary commerce and politics, and futuristic technology as merely a dream. However, today we are starting to explore this frontier. “We are entering an exciting era in [S]pace where we expect more advances in the next few decades than throughout human history.”1 Bank of America/Merrill Lynch has predicted that the Space industry will grow to over $2.7 trillion over the next three decades. Its report said, “a new raft of drivers is pushing the ‘Space Age 2.0’”.2 Indeed, this market has seen start-up investments in the range of $16 billion,3 helping fund impressive new companies like Virgin Galactic and SpaceX. There is certainly a market as Virgin Galactic says more than 600 customers have registered for a $250,000 suborbital trip, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Katy Perry, Ashton Kutcher, and physicist Stephen Hawking.4 Although Space-tourism is the exciting face of a future in Space, the Space industry has far more to offer. This interview with Jon McBride is being conducted for the JSC Oral History Project at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The interviewer is Jennifer Ross-Nazzal, assisted by Sandra Johnson. Thank you again for making time for us, especially at this late moment. MCBRIDE: My pleasure. ROSS-NAZZAL: Tell us about your interest in the space program as a child. MCBRIDE: I guess, my first, really, recollection is probably 1957 and the launch of Sputnik [Russian satellite] and followed on with Explorer [1, U.S. satellite] and the selection of our astronauts and our Russian cosmonaut friends. I guess I was 13 or 14 when Sputnik was launched, so I was captivated, like most Americans, particularly the young kids. It got my attention, to the point that my friends and I would design our rockets in our mechanical drawing classes and bring those drawings home to my laboratory that my mother let me build in the basement. We would fabricate them out of copper tubing and build the solid fuel to go in them and a launch pad out in my backyard. I had plenty of room, a couple acres there in West Virginia. Bill ToddlUnited Space Alliance Marc Reagan/NASA NEEMO Project Leads Spaceflight Training, NASAJJSC October, 2003 Abstract NEEMO is the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations, a cooperative project between NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NEEMO was created and is managed by the Mission Operations Directorate at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. On the NOAA side, the National Undersea Research Center (NURC) in Key Largo, FL, with the help of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, manages and operates the Aquarius Program. NEEMO was developed by astronaut training specialists to utilize an undersea research habitat as a multi-objective mission analog for long-duration space flight. Each mission was designed to expose astronauts to extreme environments for training purposes and to research crew behavior, habitability, and space analog life sciences. All of this was done much in the model of a space mission utilizing specific crew procedures, mission rules and timelines. Objectives of the missions were very diverse and contained many of the typical space mission type activities such as EV As (also known as extra vehicular activities), in-habitat science and research, and educational, public outreach, and media events. Five missions, dubbed NEEMO 1-5, were conducted between October 2001 and July 2003, the longest of which (NEEMO 5) lasted 14 days. -

Jair Bolsonaro represents this sentiment, that is, an alternative path to our ills; a point off the curve in relation to the politically correct and a hope of realignment of forces toward order and progress. Its little explored platform of government contains the essence of what is expected: not a savior of the fatherland, but a technical and honest government.. -

Combining her interests as an adventurer and an animal lover, Dottie now spends her time rock climbing and educating people in Mexico on how to care for their pets in an effort to reduce the number of stray dogs living on the streets. However, while caring for other’s animals, a sudden accident put the future of her own dogs in perspective. “Knowing that my dogs will be loved and cared for after my death is a wonderful feeling.” Last year, Dottie fell while rock climbing and shattered her leg. As a single woman, she was concerned that, had she died, her dogs would be put down without having a plan in place for their care. From the time we flipped our calendars over to January 2014 to the moment our Centers flew their last missions in December, the strength of Challenger Center continued to reveal itself in truly magnificent ways. In just one year, we released two new standards-aligned simulated missions, opened two new Challenger Learning Centers, hosted unique special events to celebrate space exploration including numerous screenings of the hit film Interstellar, and made significant progress on a national research and development program to expand our reach into the classroom. We’re proud that this represents just a snapshot of our many successes from 2014. One of our most significant accomplishments was the opening of the Challenger Learning Center at the Scobee Education Center on the campus of San Antonio College. Opening a new Center is a huge undertaking for the staff and the community behind the Center. Together, we are all positively impacting more students as we expand our footprint across America and abroad. The Center at the Scobee Education Center marks the launch of our next generation simulated learning experience. Its new design offers students the environment to explore and learn with technology that meets their expectations. With every Center we open, mission we fly, and program we develop, our team is thoughtful to the Challenger Center mission and vision that was created nearly three decades ago and is still critical today. -
