The LE’s (Limited Edition) knives I will review in the next newsletter but suffice to say they were all well received, especially the two which were dedicated to my father.

My mother and I had a very special moment on the first day of the show when Cabelas asked to present us with a memorial shadow box built by a Cabelas employee who had been touched meeting my father at multiple Cabela’s grand opening signing events. It was a testament to how my father was perceived. The presentation made the back inside cover of the Shot Daily magazine as a notable event.

My head is spinning with all the opportunity we are presented with this year and I hope you all have a great and prosperous 2016

4 All About BuckSkins, the Model 529 By Joe Houser Back in the 1980’s it seemed that Buck was trying to present the model 505 in as many variations as possible. The 527 Treasury series, the 425 Mini Bucks, the 826/825 Liberty knives, and the 529 BuckSkins just to name a few. One of the things I really like about all of the above models is the fact that they all had unique boxes, not just the “generic” Buck box of the day. This article and included data sheet is about the 529’s and their boxes had graphics which made it look as though the box itself was also wrapped in the same interesting skin/hide as the knife inside. The 529’s were introduced in 1988 and were in the line until 1991. As soon as they were introduced, something happened and the line got jumbled around some. Some models were gone just as fast as they appeared, even though sales were good, but the reason why could not be determined. I did find some interesting tidbits about the series. In 1988 we stopped using eel skin sides with seams. These new seamless skins allowed the shop to use a shallow cavity brass side. When was the switch actually made to all shallow cavity sides? We don’t know but in late 1988 the decision was made to use up all existing brass sides and switch to nickel silver. Exactly when this occurred is uncertain but the Buck Dealer catalog from 1989 announced the switch so I am fairly certain it happened sometime that year. Another odd decision that was made, but later changed, was to use elephant skin! Luckily they changed their minds and didn’t make any which undoubtedly saved me from many phone calls from unhappy customers wanting to know why we would kill an elephant just to make a dumb knife! I still get those calls in regards to our use of Elk antlers and that’s enough for me! I hope you find this information useful and interesting.

In subsequent years Buck COMMEMORATIVE KNIVES has done a good job in reporting the issuance of these By John Hunt knives under Special Projects. As mentioned above, some of the early (1976-1989) Over the last 40 years a key segment of Buck’s commemorative knives were very limited and today business has been knives produced with are very hard to find. A few examples are the ones commemorative themes. Interestingly, some are the made for the Apple Blossom Festival (110, 119, & rarest, most expensive and beautiful knives made by 501/503), South Carolina Sheriff’s Association (119), Buck. They are usually distinguished with some special feature such as handle material, blade steel, bolster material with engraving, blade treatment including pad imprint, laser or acid etch, gold plating, or laser cutout. In a 1990 BCCI newsletter Vern Taylor, Club founder, reported “In 1976 Buck issued the very first of their knives designed for the collector. That is the Bicentennial”. 8 opportunities to tie-in with a celebration in your city or community. The collectibles market is unique, big and growing”. One of my favorites that first appeared in this catalog is the 903 “Four Generation” Commemorative Bowie. The 10 inch mirror polished blade is etched with beautiful scrolled art that serves as a background for gold-filled etched portraits of Hoyt, Al, Chuck, and CJ Buck. The handle of the 15 inch knife is impregnated birchwood. Some came in an attractive blue felt-lined oak display case. One of the most productive years for commemorative knives was in 2002 when Buck celebrated their Buck Four Generations 903 Bowie centennial. Of the numerous offerings, two standout for special recognition and were highlighted in Joe Houser’s article, “Buck’s 100 Year Anniversary Celebration Knives”, in the December, 2011 BCCI newsletter. The first was a spectacular Sub-Hilt Bowie that Buck stated “was created as the most exclusive Limited Edition Knife in Buck’s 100 year history”. Only 100 were to be run, but Joe said, “In actuality, Buck only made 20 of these diamond encrusted bowie knives. The suggested retail of $10,000 may have had something to do with the low number”. The second item, the “Family Favorites Set” of four knives, featured the favorite knife of Hoyt (118), Al (401), Chuck (532), and CJ (191). The last two were personally signed. According to Joe, the set “had a suggested retail of $3000 and was to be a run of 1000 sets but only 55 were actually made. Over the years Buck sold some of the knives from the set individually but to have one of the 55 complete sets would be very nice indeed!” The next major introduction of collectible commemorative knives was in 2014 with the 50th anniversary of 110 folding hunter. To celebrate this landmark milestone Buck issued the Special Edition 50th Anniversary Box Set with four 110’s named after the streets the factories were on during their time of introduction. The MSRP was $1500. The knives were also offered individually with a quantity limit of 500 each. These and the standard 110 had a special 50th anvil logo stamped on the tang which will remain exclusive to this year. Now in 2016 Buck has produced the “Chuck Buck Buck Family Favorites Set from 2002 Collection” of two knives, in tribute to, and in loving memory of Chuck. One is a 500 CB Pearl Duke, and the other is a 405 Chuck Buck Signature Knife. Both represent an ideal application of a commemorative knife. This article highlights a special few out of many hundreds of different Buck knives with commemorative themes. They have been a key part of Buck’s business and provide a great opportunity to build a stunning collection. Good sources of information on these knives include, Buck catalogs, Special Project lists, BCCI newsletters, Buck customers and dealers, Shows, and fellow Club members.
