The Chicago Exhibition of Scandinavian-American Artists in 1929 Rolf H. Erickson* The Scandinavian-American art exhibition held in Chicago, 1-10 Dec. 1929, was the first of its kind, and since a similar exhibition never again was held, it remains the one and only time that Scandinavian-American artists exhibited together in the city. 1 Four of Chicago's Scandinavian groups, Danes, Finns, Norwegians and Swedes, were involved in its organization, but Scandinavian American artists from throughout the country were invited to exhibit. The exhibit itself was held at the fashionable quarters of the Illinois Women's Athletic Club (formed in 1918) at the corner of Pearson and Rush streets in Chicago.2 The principal organizers were Thyra Peterson and her husband Charles Simeon Peterson. Both Thyra and Charles had long been interested in fostering interest in art in Chicago.
