}}}} NANAIMO LIONS FREE SKATE We are in the process of finalizing our contract with the City of Nanaimo for the Free Skate program to commence in September. The need for and a measure of the success of this program is indicated by the participation. Over 18,000 skat- ers in Nanaimo have participated in the last three years.

LIONS FREE SWIM }}}} We are well into our annual Lions Free Swim project. In the first eight sessions, 1,250 people have participated which is up over 100 participants compared to last year. We have five more sessions to go and all indications are that this is a program meeting community needs.

WHEELCHAIR RAMP The Club has been requested to construct a wheelchair ramp for an individual who has contracted ALS and is now wheelchair bound.

CHRISTMAS IN MAY }}}} Some residents of Nanaimo questioned their eyesight this week when they saw the Lions Christmas float parading through the streets of Nanaimo. Unfortunately, we lost our storage facilities with the Port Authority and had to relocate the float to the City of Nanaimo works yards.

CAMPERSHIPS The Nanaimo Lions club has sponsors Kevin Valentim and his social worker to attend camp for the third time. This year Kevin will be attending the Camp in Winfield this year.

INTERNATIONAL AWARD }}}} One of our newest and definitely the youngest, was awarded with an Interna- tional President’s Certificate of Appreciation at the District 19I Conference by our International guest, PID Lion Joyce Middleton. In his brief time as a club member, Lion Rob has become involved in most projects and has become our Facebook manager.

DONATIONS Since our last submission some of major donations include: · $500.00 to the Autism Society · $1,000 to the Nanaimo Regional and District Hospital Foundation. · $1,000 to Loaves and Fishes [the Nanaimo Food Bank]

SPOT SCANNER PROJECT We have two sessions scheduled with the Early Years Healthy Start project: one in early July in Nanaimo and one in September on Gabriola to which we will invite the participation of the Gabriola Lions.

DUMPSTER DIVERS }}}} Our Dumpsters Divers project, under the leadership of Lion Len Hannah con- tinue to be one of our major fund raisers, in addition to keeping a lot of plastic and other garbage out of our environment.

Annual Seniors’ Breakfast at Echo Centre

On Sunday, June 3, 2018, seniors from several locations in Port Alberni gathered for the annual Lions Pancake Breakfast. Two sittings of approximately 100 people were served pancakes, sausages and juice by Alberni Valley Lions and volunteers from the community. Lion Laurie Hurst did an admirable job of emceeing the event and Lion Ron Jorgenson informed the seniors about the District Vision Screening project and its value to children in our schools. As usual, the Alberni Valley Lions enjoyed great support from seniors who purchased a large number of Supermarket Dash Raffle tickets at this event. The Club thanks the seniors and the community at large for their support of this vision- related event. Supermarket Dash

At 10:00 AM on Sunday, June 10, 2018, volunteers from the Alberni Valley Lions Club joined our Supermarket Dash winner for the Your Vision Is Our Vision Supermarket Dash. This year, the winner was Ken Smith of Surrey, BC who had his daughter, Carley Bowyer, do the shopping. Carley is a recent transplant to our community. Other winners included Rick Dass ($150 Gift Basket), Gilbert Germain ($150 Gift Basket), Lillian Rogers ($75 Gift Card) and Lorraine LeBel ($25 Gift Card). The event raised just under $1,500 after expenses were paid. The Alberni Valley Lions are grateful for the support of all those who bought tickets.
