Private White fought back against the Boston citizens and hit one man with his bayonet. This caused alarm throughout Boston, bells began to ring, and more people gathered in the streets. British reinforcements arrived to guard the Custom 1 House, led by Captain Thomas Preston. The taunting and threats against the soldiers continued; some colonists even hit the soldiers with sticks and clubs. Someone eventually yelled the word “fire!”.
