The Emmy® Award is the symbol of excellence in broadcasting and - as we all know - excellence is achieved in every market size. The purpose of the Regional Awards is to recognize such achievements within the smaller geographic areas of the country. There are currently 19 regional chapters of NATAS in the United States. The constitutionally mandated territory of the Lower Great Lakes Regional Emmy® Awards includes por- tions of Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. The regional statuettes presented this evening serve to provide incentive for further achievement and to focus the public’s attention on the cultural, technological and artistic advancement of our professional colleagues locally. All entries must have been created, produced and originally broadcast (distributed) within the Lower Great Lakes Regional Emmy® Awards competition territory between January 1 and December 31, 2020. The entries must considered to be expressly intended for and created for our regional audience. We wish to thank the Boston/New England, Upper Midwest, Chicago/Midwest, Lone Star, Rocky Moun- tain Southwest, Northwest, and Southeast chapters for judging this year’s awards. JUDGING EMMY® Emmy® Award judging is peer judging. A peer judge is defined as any person with a minimum of two years of professional experience in the field of television program production or programming who is directly engaged in or supervises the discipline being judged. Potential judges may also include profes- sional in allied fields, who by the specific nature of their work are uniquely qualified to make judgmental decisions concerning particular areas of television production. Examples of peer judges include writers; producers; directors; programming, production and news executives; craft persons; advertising agency executives and creative directors involved in programming decisions; print journalsits (who have hands- on television production experience); sports professionals; college and university educators who represent journalism/film/television; and former broadcast journalists. To keep the awards at the highest level of integrity, television professionals from other chapters judge your work. With online judging, there are some categories whereby several chapter are involved in the judging process. A minimum of seven, but preferably more, judges view each entry. These judges view each entry and score online, without discussion. No consensus judging is allowed. Just as we count on our peers in other markets to judge our entries, we count on you to help judge theirs. The success of the Emmy® Awards process depends on the willingness of qualified professionals to serve as judges. As stiplated by the “Standard Clauses” in the Call for Entry, those persons entering the compe- tition have agreed to serve as a judge. This year we have already completed judging for the Boston/New England, Lone Star Sports, Northwest, and Southeast chapters chapter. The Rocky Mountain Southwest chapter entires are currently in progress. Check your account dashboard for available panels Later this summer we will be judging entries from the Upper Midwest, Chicago/Midwest, and Lone Star News chapters. Throughout the year, we receive requests for judging. Many chaper’s conduct panels in Spanish and wel- come Spanish speaking judges from our chapter to participate. Contact the office to indicate your interest. [email protected] 440.526.3669 3 WHERE’S MY EMMY® STATUETTE? AWARDS WILL BE SHIPPED TO THE STATIONS AND PRODUCTION COMPANIES This year the Emmy® Statuettes will be shipped directly from the manufacturer to the stations and production companies that submitted the entry. Shipping will begin approximately June 25. The NATAS Store, at nataslgl.org, has Commorative statuettes, Nomination Plaques, Production Plaques, Curved Glass Desktop Display, and some larger plaques to help celebrate your outstanding accomplishments. See the ad later in the booklet. JOHN STEALEY PRESIDENT & TRUSTEE On behalf of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Lower Great Lakes Chapter Board of Governors, I invite you to sit back in the comfort of your own home (or at work) and enjoy the 52nd Regional Emmy Awards streaming to an electronic device near you. For one more time. I hoped we could be celebrating in person in Indianapolis his year. However, forces far beyond our control have continued to make that impossible. You can post to our Twitter feed and Facebook page using the hashtag #LGL2021EMMYS. Feel free to post an acceptance speech and/or pictures of your Emmy Watch Party. In addition to the streaming services, we also offer streaming directly to our website - www.nataslgl. org - where the Emmy Award recipients will be posted after the show. For the second time we are streaming to the NATAS National page – theemmys.tv, watchemmys.tv and the National YouTube channel – youtube.com/ theemmys. Get the Emmy App for IOS and Android. Its free, registation is required. Typically, this column is used to review the events of the past year; and what a year it was from the pandemic to the elections. I’d like us all to raise a glass to the hardworking individuals in front and behind the cameras working tirelessly everyday to keep us all safe and informed during this past year. You are truly making a difference in your communities. I would like to thank the entire Board of Governors for their trust in this year’s gala being produced virtually - again, and without their support this would not have been possible. Shout-outs to our Executive Director Bob Hammer and our Chaper

EDY: Conditions of Acceptance: The United States Military, the Press, and the “Woman War Correspondent,” 1846-1945 (Under the direction of Jean Folkerts) This dissertation chronicles the history of American women who worked as war correspondents through the end of World War II, demonstrating the ways the military, the press, and women themselves constructed categories for war reporting that promoted and prevented women’s access to war: the “war correspondent,” who covered war-related news, and the “woman war correspondent,” who covered the woman’s angle of war. As the first study to examine these concepts, from their emergence in the press through their use in military directives, this dissertation relies upon a variety of sources to consider the roles and influences, not only of the women who worked as war correspondents but of the individuals and institutions surrounding their work. Nineteenth and early 20th century newspapers continually featured the woman war correspondent—often as the first or only of her kind, even as they wrote about more than sixty such women by 1914.

Seltzer readjusted its original working-class bias into a less controversial neighborhood orientation, stressing personal contacts and promoting the slogan "The Newspaper That Serves Its Readers." In the postwar period the Press continued its public service campaigns and remained an unrivaled force in Ohio politics.
