2 PURPOSE

The National Academy of Arts and Sciences (NATAS) confers the coveted Emmy® Award upon talented individuals within the broadcasting industry.

The Emmy® Award is the symbol of excellence in broadcasting and - as we all know - excellence is achieved in every market size. The purpose of the Regional Awards is to recognize such achievements within the smaller geographic areas of the country. There are currently 19 regional chapters of NATAS in the .

The constitutionally mandated territory of the Lower Great Lakes Regional Emmy® Awards includes por- tions of , , and Pennsylvania. The regional statuettes presented this evening serve to provide incentive for further achievement and to focus the public’s attention on the cultural, technological and artistic advancement of our professional colleagues locally.

All entries must have been created, produced and originally broadcast (distributed) within the Lower Great Lakes Regional Emmy® Awards competition territory between January 1 and December 31, 2020. The entries must considered to be expressly intended for and created for our regional audience.

We wish to thank the Boston/New England, Upper Midwest, Chicago/Midwest, Lone Star, Rocky Moun- tain Southwest, Northwest, and Southeast chapters for judging this year’s awards. JUDGING EMMY®

Emmy® Award judging is peer judging. A peer judge is defined as any person with a minimum of two years of professional experience in the field of television program production or programming who is directly engaged in or supervises the discipline being judged. Potential judges may also include profes- sional in allied fields, who by the specific nature of their work are uniquely qualified to make judgmental decisions concerning particular areas of television production. Examples of peer judges include writers; producers; directors; programming, production and news executives; craft persons; advertising agency executives and creative directors involved in programming decisions; print journalsits (who have hands- on television production experience); sports professionals; college and university educators who represent journalism/film/television; and former broadcast journalists.

To keep the awards at the highest level of integrity, television professionals from other chapters judge your work. With online judging, there are some categories whereby several chapter are involved in the judging process. A minimum of seven, but preferably more, judges view each entry. These judges view each entry and score online, without discussion. No consensus judging is allowed.

Just as we count on our peers in other markets to judge our entries, we count on you to help judge theirs. The success of the Emmy® Awards process depends on the willingness of qualified professionals to serve as judges. As stiplated by the “Standard Clauses” in the Call for Entry, those persons entering the compe- tition have agreed to serve as a judge. This year we have already completed judging for the Boston/New England, Lone Star Sports, Northwest, and Southeast chapters chapter. The Rocky Mountain Southwest chapter entires are currently in progress. Check your account dashboard for available panels Later this summer we will be judging entries from the Upper Midwest, Chicago/Midwest, and Lone Star News chapters.

Throughout the year, we receive requests for judging. Many chaper’s conduct panels in Spanish and wel- come Spanish speaking judges from our chapter to participate. Contact the office to indicate your interest. [email protected] 440.526.3669

Its free, registation is required.

Typically, this column is used to review the events of the past year; and what a year it was from the pandemic to the elections. I’d like us all to raise a glass to the hardworking individuals in front and behind the cameras working tirelessly everyday to keep us all safe and informed during this past year. You are truly making a difference in your communities.

I would like to thank the entire Board of Governors for their trust in this year’s gala being produced virtually - again, and without their support this would not have been possible. Shout-outs to our Executive Director Bob Hammer and our Chaper Secretary, aka technical wizard, Jim Stunek for putting up with me at all hours of the day and night during the process, and to the many members of the chapter who gave so freely of their time to pull this off.

I also thank you, the remarkable members of our chapter - a jewel in the NATAS crown. We have some of the most dedicated, talented and hardworking people in the television industry in our chapter. It is an honor to continue to serve the NATAS Lower Great Lakes Chapter during these difficult times. The board and I are committed to doing everything we can to continue to honor excellence and ensure the future of our industry in these uncertain times.

This is my final awards gala as my term as president and trustee of the chapter is coming to a close. It has been one of the most exciting and yet challenging times of my life. The past 4 years seem to have flown by in a flash. I have met so many professionals and heard a lot of facinating stories about television. I’m not going away and will continute to serve the chapter in the coming years.

The time has come... fill up the snack bowls, get the dip ready, make some popcorn, grab your favorite beverage and enjoy –

The 52nd Lower Great Lakes Chapter Regional Emmy Awards!

See you in Indianapolis next year! I know, I said that last year too.

9 SILVER CIRCLE INDUCTEE LOU MAGLIO

Lou Maglio is a journalist with the credentials and experience that allow him to communicate with an audience like few others. Originally from New York, Lou received a masters from the prestigious University of Missouri School of Journalism. He worked in radio and television in Missouri, Iowa, and North Carolina, before moving to Cleveland to join WEWS-TV as a news producer in 1981. In 1994, he became news anchor for WJW-TV in Cleveland, a position he holds to this day.

Lou has proven adept at all areas of journalism: the hard news, the light news, the feature story and the crime story. He also has had key roles on several major shows in the history of Cleveland television. He was a protégé of the legendary Fred Griffith on WEWS-TV’s “The Morning Exchange” in the 1980s, while also serving as the long-time host of “Academic Challenge” – one of the longest-running shows in the history of local television. In the 1990s, Lou debuted a new 5 o’clock newscast on WJW-TV that continues to this day. Lou later went on to host FOX 8’s 6 o’clock news before assuming the duties for the 10pm show as well.

After more than forty years Lou still puts in the work, day after day. He reads over his entire show (including the reporter packages) ahead of time. He debriefs with reporters ahead of the broadcasts to make sure he asks the right questions on air. He does this out of a respect for his colleagues and for his audience. He wants both to feel as if they got his best every day.

It’s easy to take someone who makes it all look so effortless for granted. But Lou’s on-air expertise is the result of hard work—almost all of it done over nearly 40 years in the Cleveland market. He truly is one of Cleveland’s Own.

11 SILVER CIRCLE INDUCTEE RICH GEYSER

Rich Geyser spent all of his 42 year television career at WEWS TV. It was a career that started with a huge choice. After graduating from Ohio University in 1978, Rich was offered a $25,000 a year Teamster job with UPS at the same time he was offered a part- time, $6,000 a year job at WEWS. He took the TV job and as they say, the rest is history!

Rich started as a film editor and worked his way into a news photographer position. He was the last photographer in Cleveland to shoot film.

When Rich started in 1978, television was still relatively new. You learned on the job. Changes came fast and everyone worked together to try new things and be innovative, like doing live shots from all over Ohio via chopper relay.

Because TV news was new, viewership was huge and WEWS was committed to bringing relevant stories to viewers from anywhere they happened. That allowed Rich, along with anchor Ted Henry, to travel for stories. They in Berlin the night the wall fell and attended the war crimes trial of John Demjanjuk in Israel. Other big stories took Rich to a Mayan Village for a week, to Poland with an Auschwitz survivor, with the Indians to Venezuela and in a C-140 with a local Coast Guard Unit to Bahrain and embedded with the Air Force in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War. He’s covered hurricanes, presidential inaugurations, Super Bowls and was at Oracle Arena, the night the Cavs won the NBA championship. He also spent on the streets of bringing stories to life through his camera lens. Rich became part of one story he covered when the FBI took down the Cleveland mob in the 80’s. He was attacked by mob boss John Calandra after Calandra was convicted in federal court. That story went viral, meaning in those days, it was front page news in major newspapers across the country.

Rich met and married his wife Ann when she worked as a news producer at Channel 5. They have 3 sons, Justin, wife Jess, their son Everett and Zachary and Patrick. Rich has volunteered with the Boy Scouts since his boys were in Cub Scouts and all earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He’s earned many awards including from UPI, AP, the Cleveland Press Club, 3 Emmy’s and the National NAPTE Iris Award. Rich calls his 42 years at WEWS a never ending adventure.

“I always thought I was the luckiest kid to land my dream job and I still felt that way the day I left. It’s been an amazing run and I thank WEWS for taking a chance on me. I also want to thank all those I”ve worked with through the years. They were my second family.”

13 SILVER CIRCLE INDUCTEE BOB DONALDSON

Bob Donaldson’s 30 year career in Central Indiana has been one of firsts, beginnings and honors. Bob currently anchors the 5pm, 6pm and 11pm newscast for WTTV-CBS4 India- napolis. He is proud to be part of the first CBS4 news an- chor team since its 2015 acquisition. But his work at CBS4 wasn’t the first time he’d been called upon to start a news operation in the Hoosier state.

Thirty years prior, Bob was selected after an extensive na- tionwide search to serve as the lead anchor for Indianapolis’ first Fox affiliate, WXIN FOX59. The 1991 team launched the award-winning newscast, “FOX59 News at 10”. In fact, Bob was a key contributor to one of the most successful local news launches ever among Fox affiliates. His efforts helped make WXIN, “Fox Station of the Year” in both 1992 and again in 1994.

In addition to his work on the anchor desk, Bob produced Emmy-award winning special reports and documentaries during his 25 years at FOX59. Just as significantly, Bob was at the forefront of the effort to transform the team into one of the most dominant Fox affiliates in the country. He launched the highly-rated “FOX59 News First at Four”, which led to the station’s expansion at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. He became a proven leader in the newsroom and briefly stepped up as the Interim News Director and was promoted to serve as the station’s Managing Editor.

During his tenure at Fox 59, Bob covered every significant story that broke in Central Indiana - from Indiana’s response to the 9/11 attacks to the State’s 2012 Super Bowl. His newscasts were recognized with several Emmy Awards and he was personally honored by NATAS multiple times for his news reporting.

Bob’s journey in Indianapolis television took an unexpected turn in 2015, when the CBS affiliate programming moved from WISH to WXIN’s sister station, WTTV. Bob’s experience launching top rated newscasts and his respected stature in the market led to his selection again to build, develop and lead a strong brand and another successful news team. To help with the transition, Bob continued anchoring “FOX59 News at 10” on WXIN while taking on the new 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts for the CBS4 startup. His anchoring on two top rated network affiliates had never been attempted before in the Indianapolis market. As he had done numerous times in his career, Bob’s efforts exceeded expectations and made the launch of CBS4 Indy a resounding success while maintaining the high ratings of FOX59. “CBS4 Indy’s 11 p.m.” was honored with the Emmy award for Best Newscast in 2018- just two years after its launch. The team’s unprecedented success contin- ues to this day with the 2020 “Station of the Year” award given by the Indiana Broadcasters Association for its community involvement and journalistic excellence. NATAS also recognized WTTV for Overall News Excellence in 2020...a crowning achievement for the CBS startup.

Bob continued the dual anchor roles for a full year before leaving FOX59 News at 10 to focus solely on the CBS4 evening newscasts. He was one of the local news anchors tapped by CBS News to anchor the CBS Weekend News while the pro- duction was forced out of during the pandemic. Bob continues to thrive today as the longest tenured male anchor in the Indianapolis market.

Bob has been recognized repeatedly for his volunteer work for groups such as College Mentors for Kids, the Muscular Dys- trophy Association, Habitat for Humanity, the Children’s Bureau and the Center for Leadership Development. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Indianapolis Chapter of the National Kidney Foundation.

He and his wife, Dr. Skye Winslow, have raised three children in central Indiana. They are proud Hoosiers, who love to call Indiana their home.

15 SILVER CIRCLE INDUCTEE MELISSA WATSON

Criss-crossing the states of Indiana and Ohio for over thirty-years, Melissa “Mel” Watson is an accomplished journalist in four NATAS Lower Great Lakes television markets and of one of the region’s participating univer- sities.

Mel realized she wanted to be a journalist when she was assigned to do a report in her fifth-grade history class about the Boston Tea Party. She decided to tell the story in newspaper form which was complete with sports, weather, sales and obituaries!

Mel is an alumna of Ball State University where she re- ceived an Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1994, Outstanding Telecommunications Alumna in 2010 and the 2016 Telecommunications Service Award for leading the Broadcasting Alumni Association as President.

She began her career in 1990 at WANE-TV in Ft. Wayne as an associate producer, eventually becoming a pro- ducer and earning the title Circle of Excellence Employee of the Year. From northern Indiana, she made her way to Indianapolis in 1994 and produced the 5pm and 11pm newscasts at WTHR. That experience in Indy prepared her well as she moved to Cleveland in 1998 when her husband, Rick, received a job transfer with Sherwin Wil- liams. She joined the staff of WEWS where for nearly 17 years, Mel produced various newscasts and managed the special projects and investigative team. During her time with the Scripps station, the company gave Mel the President’s Award for her work and dedication to the company. She also earned more than a dozen Emmys and Associated Press Awards. Six of those recognized Mel as Best Producer. She received three Edward R. Murrow Awards, one for Best Producer. The investigative team she managed was honored with one of the most presti- gious journalism honors, The Peabody Award. The WEWS investigative team uncovered the connection of vet- erans who served at a military base in Antarctica and cancer. Mel also spent two years at WOIO in Cleveland an executive producer of daily newscasts.

Mel is currently the news director at WTVG in Toledo leading a team of nearly sixty journalists. She also works closely with the University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University coordinating internships and part-time employment opportunities for students. She regularly returns to Ball State where she is a guest professor or re- cruiting students for Gray-TV.

Mel is dedicating this award to her father, Jim Harrison, who lost his battle with Glioblastoma six weeks ago. “Dad worked long hours and overtime whenever it was offered to pay for my education. He had three rules. The first was no partying. The second was I had to work part-time to pay for my books and my spending money. The last was to become a news anchor! Well, I didn’t follow that rule. He even said as much in conversations we had in the weeks before he died. I told him I did better than that, I’m the boss!”

17 SILVER CIRCLE INDUCTEE TOM LIVINGSTON

Tom Livingston has been at WEWS since 1980. He began with an internship as a videotape editor and within months became a full-time news photojour- nalist in what was then a top-10 market.

A native of Cleveland, he attended St. Edward High School and receive a BA in Communications from Cleveland State University. He is married to Christopher Matlock.

Honored for his photography work by the Associ- ated Press, National Headliner and NATAS, Livingston’s career also includes an Emmy nomination as an anchor. He and Cleveland television legend Leon Bibb co-anchored the quarterly 30-minute Video Vault archive show in 2012.

Along with reporter John Kosich, Livingston shot the renowned Charles Ramsey “Dead Giveaway” live 2013 interview when three kidnapped Cleveland women were found.

When the station moved to the Multimedia Journalist platform in 2009, Livingston reported on a myriad of stories on camera including the execution of Cleveland mass murderer Frank Spisak.

He did a weekly Video Vault web segment digging through the station’s rich archives posting video gems from the history of Cedar Point amusement park, the Cuyahoga River fire and Cleveland’s Mayor Ralph Perk accidently sparking his hair afire from a blow torch.

Livingston feels the intangibles he brings to his craft are just as important as the pictures he takes, un- derstanding the needs of the reporter as well as the emotions of people in the stories.

“I want people to know I care about them and they matter,” he said. “If I can bond with the people whose story we’re telling, it helps put them at ease and helps the reporter to tell a better story.”

Livingston counts cycling and travel among his passions. Travels related to his career took him to Cen- tral America (where he used his high school Spanish to do interviews), the former Yugoslavia and to India, where he and WEWS anchor Ted Henry met with Saint Mother Teresa.

He and fellow Silver Circle Award recipient Rich Geyser worked the same shift together at WEWS for 40 years.
